Barriers to Transitioning to a Circular Bio-based Economy: Findings from an Industrial Perspective

<p>The transition from a linear fossil-based to a circular bio-based economy represents an opportunity and a suitable pathway for achieving several sustainable development goals. However, the transition is a complex process since it requires transformative policies, purposeful innovation, access to finance, risk-taking capacity as well as new and sustainable business models and markets. Accordingly, the first step in this transition process is the identification of barriers that are hampering the transition to a sustainable circular bio-based economy. With this motivation in mind, this study reviews grey literature to identify barriers focusing on four critical sectors facing major challenges within the current linear economy and requiring a sustainable transition most urgently: construction, chemicals, plastics, and textile sectors. Employing an adapted STEEP methodology (Social, Technological, Economical, Environmental, Political), a total of 193 different barriers have been identified and clustered under six categories: cultural, technical, economic, environmental, governance, and structural. Regardless of the sector, cultural and structural barriers are identified as the most prominent; the lack of incentives for consumer behaviour change and lack of stakeholder collaboration were the most cited barriers among the literature records. From a value chain perspective, most of the barriers are related to the material processing and product manufacturing stage. Finally, potential solutions, extracted from the grey literature, are proposed to fill the gaps and overcome the identified barriers. Many of the identified barriers are common across the four investigated sectors, indicating the solutions or measures can be applicable in a wider perspective to promote the transition in the right direction.</p>

TRANSIT long-distance multimodal trips model results - a Spanish case study

<p>The files downloaded present the results per scenario considered obtained with the agent-based model developed for the assessment of the&nbsp;Intermodal Timetable Synchronisation solution proposed in the scope of the TRANSIT project (<a href="https://www.transit-h2020.eu/">https://www.transit-h2020.eu/</a>).</p> <p>An agent-based modelling framework called <a href="https://github.com/StefanoPenazzi/jtap/tree/main">J-TAP</a>&nbsp;has been developed and put at work to implement a Spanish long-distance multimodal trips model. The enhanced version&nbsp;of J-TAP used in this work can be found on a&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/NommonSolutionsAndTechnologies/jtap">github repository</a>.</p> <p>The case study is focused on modelling the long-distance travel patterns of the residents in the Valencia (Spain)&nbsp;area. The destinations considered include the whole of Spain. The period under study is a full year from March 2019 to February 2020 (both inclusive).The files are structured in three different scenarios:</p> <ol> <li><strong>CS01&nbsp;- Baseline</strong>. The current state of the network is considered and the actual long-distance travel patterns are obtained.</li> <li><strong>CS02 - HSR connection with Madrid-Barajas airport</strong>. The long-distance travel patterns are modelled with hard measures, the high-speed rail is connected to Madrid-Barajas airport.</li> <li><strong>CS03 - HSR connection with Madrid-Barajas airport and timetable synchronisation</strong>. The effects of the timetable synchronisation are modelled.</li> </ol> <p>Each scenario includes the following files:</p> <ul> <li>ctapModelParameters. A folder containing all the information extracted from the&nbsp;<a href="https://neo4j.com/product/graph-data-science/?utm_program=emea-prospecting&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=emea-search-offers&amp;utm_adgroup=dynamic&amp;utm_content=dynamic&amp;utm_placement=&amp;utm_network=g&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAwJWdBhCYARIsAJc4idAo4CEi9lU8TXwmBym8MNHpEIZHPBs3x_4phxbu76y1XKbYlFoZCjIaAiGhEALw_wcB">neo4j</a>&nbsp;graph database created to model the multimodal network and the agents.&nbsp;J-TAP contains packages that simplify network creation in the graph database. This&nbsp;information is stored in .json files (e.g., &quot;Os2DsTravelCostParameter.json&quot; contains the generalised cost for each OD pair and transport mode, &quot;AttractivenessParameter.json&quot; contains the&nbsp;attractiveness by destination, activity,&nbsp;time of the year and agent, etc.). The solver included in the J-TAP framework uses this information to calculate the agents plans.</li> <li>population.json. The result&nbsp;of the J-TAP optimisation. It includes the fitness value for each agent plan evaluated during the J-TAP execution. The best plan for each agent is selected as the plan performed by the agent. An agent plan includes: <ul> <li>activities - Sequence of activities.</li> <li>locations - Sequence of locations</li> <li>ts - Initial time of the activity</li> <li>te - Final time of the activity</li> </ul> </li> <li>LinkTimeFlow.csv. It is obtained after processing the previous file. It contains the number of agents using each link in the network (i.e., road, rail, air and cross links) in each time interval. Dataset for Green Transition Policies, Stakeholders and Practices in Albania

<p>This dataset contributed to deliverable 4.2 Regional Mapping Report and shows the Albanian mapping.&nbsp;This report is the second deliverable of WP4 &ndash; Measuring and assessing impacts and costs of a just green transition in the WB, of the GreenFORCE project. It was jointly authored by the WB project partners, as well as 2 subcontracted parties from the region.</p> <p>The EU Economic and Investment Plan for the WB includes a green agenda for the WB, with pillars to be pursued for transitioning towards a carbon-neutral economy. Such a shift will surely challenge the economies and societies in the WB. The social and policy context is yet fragile to allow for the development and mass distribution of green transition technologies, while human resources are not prepared and/or are insufficient to produce and implement innovation. Yet, the green transition also paves the way towards new development and resilience opportunities. The research will inform on the readiness/potential of societal actors (industry, academia, policymakers, civic society) to embrace the pathways to transformation, and will propose a framework for continuous monitoring of impacts and costs. The key findings and lessons learnt derived within WP4 will be transferred into the scientific papers and policy briefs (WP 2 &amp; 3) and published under the dissemination events (WP5).</p> <p>Regional mapping is a key task for the research, contributing to initial data gathering and the refinement of the research proposal, and to the sub-question on the identification of sectors and territories affected by the transitions and current progress of transition practices. This is a participatory mapping, engaging local stakeholders and communities to reveal local knowledge. Each WB partner will produce the respective country report, and Co-PLAN will work on the final regional report.</p> <p>This deliverable is the final regional report. It will also include the mapping frame used to conduct the mapping process. The WB partners will do the mapping for their own countries. The PC will subcontract data gathering for the remaining countries. The mapping is done for actors, practices and policies in place, territories upon the level of relevance and potential for engaging in green transition; and sectors. All partners will design the mapping frame, using also knowledge from other mapping processes. The frame will contain the type of information to be collected, the standardisation of data entry, and the tailored instruments to be deployed for accessing information.</p>
