<p>This online repository offers supplementary datasets supporting the findings in the research article titled "Using explainable machine learning to interpret the effects of policies on air pollution: COVID-19 lockdown in London," published in Environmental Science & Technology. The dataset contains air quality data from different monitoring sites in London between 2016 and 2020 and weather data for the same period. Additionally, the dataset incorporates 136 features relating to London's Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in the year 2019, which can be used to identify the key factors contributing to the heterogeneous changes in air quality levels at different spatial locations during the pandemic. Please refer to the metadata file for detailed data sources and descriptions. </p>

<p>Total carbon (TC) and total sulfur (TS) contents were measured using an Eltra CS-500 IR-analyzer with a TIC module. TC was determined using an infrared cell detector on CO2 gas, which was evolved by combustion under an oxygen atmosphere. Calibration was made by means of the Eltra standards 2.27 % S and 45.14 % C. <br> Dr Ewa Szram, employed at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Silesian University in Katowice, carried out the project. <p>XRF analyses were performed by the BRUKER S8 TIGER series 2 WD-XRF spectrometer with a 1kW Rh X-ray tube. The system is equipped with five analyzing crystals (LiF200, PET, XS–55, LIF-220 & Ge) and two detectors (flow and scintillation counter). The samples were measured by best detection mode (18min analysis time), and the results were evaluated in Quant-Express (fundamental parameters) and SPECTRAplus Software.<br> Dr Ewa Szram, employed at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Silesian University in Katowice, carried out the project. Lichens as bioindicators of monitoring of the selective air pollution, Zaabrze (Poland) - chromatograms of GC-MS
<p>Detailed geochemical analyses were performed on 21 powdered samples after their extraction using ultrasound Elmasonic Easy with a dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol (MeOH) mixture (1:1 vol). Extracts were separated into aliphatic-, aromatic-, semipolar- and polar fractions by column chromatography. Silica-gel was first activated at 120 °C for 24 h, cooled, and poured into Pasteur pipettes. Foour eluents were used for fraction collection, namely, n-pentane for the aliphatic fraction, n-pentane and DCM (7:3) for the aromatic fraction, acetone and DCM (1:1) for the semipolar fraction, and DCM and methanol (1:1) for the polar fraction. The semipolar - and polar fraction was derivatized with MTBSTFA (N-tertbutyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide). Samples were derivatized with MTBSTFA dissolved in super-dehydrated n-hexane, and heated at 70 °C for 3 h. The composition of the separated extracts was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) using an Agilent gas chromatograph 7890A coupled with a mass spectrometer 5975C XL MDS. A DB-5UI column was applied (60 m × 250 μm id, 0.25 μm stationary phase film), with He (purity of 99.9999%) as a carrier gas. The experimental conditions were as follows: injection volume of 1 μL; split/splitless mode; initial temperature of 45 ◦C (isothermal for 1 min); heating rate up to 100 ◦C at 20 ◦C/min, then 3 ◦C/min to 280 ◦C for 66.25 min. The mass spectrometer worked in electron ionization (EI) mode at 70 eV in full scan mode and scanned from 50 to 650 Da.<br> Dr Ewa Szram, employed at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Silesian University in Katowice, carried out the project. South</em>) - S, Nord (<em>eng. North</em>) - N, West (<em>eng. West</em>) - W, Don Bosco – D, Ost (<em>eng. East</em>) – O). In addition weather conditions like temperature, percipitation, relative humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction are added. The authors created binary temporal variables like weekday, month, season, year and day of year (numerical).</p> <p>The data consist of 2343 rows and 53 columns with a timestamp from January 2014 to May 2020 in a daily frequency.</p> <p>More details on measurement and the sites are available in Moser et al. Data from: Air pollution and visitation at national parks
Hundreds of millions of visitors travel to U.S. national parks every year to visit America's iconic landscapes. Concerns about air quality in these areas have led to strict, yet controversial pollution control policies. We document pollution trends in U.S. national parks and estimate the relationship between pollution and park visitation. From 1990-2014, average ozone concentrations in national parks were statistically indistinguishable from the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. Further, relative to U.S. cities, national parks have seen only modest reductions in days with ozone concentrations exceeding levels deemed unhealthy by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We find a robust, negative relationship between in-park ozone concentrations and park visitation. Still, 35% of all national park visits occur when ozone levels are elevated.
Data from: Genetic signatures of natural selection in response to air pollution in red spruce (Picea rubens, Pinaceae)
One of the most important drivers of local adaptation for forest trees is climate. Coupled to these patterns, however, are human-induced disturbances through habitat modification and pollution. The confounded effects of climate and disturbance have rarely been investigated with regard to selective pressure on forest trees. Here, we have developed and used a population genetic approach to search for signals of selection within a set of 36 candidate genes chosen for their putative effects on adaptation to climate and human-induced air pollution within five populations of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.), distributed across its natural range and air pollution gradient in eastern North America. Specifically, we used FST outlier and environmental correlation analyses to highlight a set of seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were overly correlated with climate and levels of sulphate pollution after correcting for the confounding effects of population history. Use of three age cohorts within each population allowed the effects of climate and pollution to be separated temporally, as climate-related SNPs (n = 7) showed the strongest signals in the oldest cohort, while pollution-related SNPs (n = 3) showed the strongest signals in the youngest cohorts. These results highlight the usefulness of population genetic scans for the identification of putatively nonneutral evolution within genomes of nonmodel forest tree species, but also highlight the need for the development and application of robust methodologies to deal with the inherent multivariate nature of the genetic and ecological data used in these types of analyses.
Dataset for the analysis of the association of atopic dermatitis(AD) symptom with air pollution and weather
<p>This dataset includes atopic dermatitis(AD) symptom, air pollution, weather data on a daily bases. The dataset was made for the analyses of the association of AD symptom in children with air pollution and weather. 177 AD patients <6 years old from the Seoul Metropolitan Area in Korea were enrolled and followed for 17 months between August 2013 and December 2014.</p> <p>Definition of symptom presence: Parents or guardians were instructed to record the extent of itching, sleep disturbance, erythema, dryness, oozing, and edema on a scale of 0 to 4 by using smartphone-adjusted symptom diary. The presence of AD symptoms was determined when a symptom score was 2 points or more for both itching and sleep disturbance scores, accompanied by at least 2 points of the sum of the following symptoms: erythema, dryness, edema, or oozing. </p>
