Literature review of the enablers and barriers to stakeholder and citizen engagement in climate change adaptation process (as part of Adaptation AGORA project)
<p>This dataset is the result of collaborative work for Deliverable 4.1 (WP4; T4.1) of the Adaptation AGORA project. This database was used to conduct a literature review of the enablers and barriers to stakeholder and citizen engagement in climate change adaptation process. It contains 123 papers retrived from Web of Science Databse in June 2023. <span>We used a keyword search to identify and select articles that fell within the scope of our research, with each article containing at least one keyword related to climate change adaptation solutions, climate change, co-production, citizen and stakeholder involvement and factors (enablers and barriers). </span></p> <p><span>We divided the coding framework into four main sections:</span></p> <ul> <li> <p><span>Section 1 collected basic information about the paper (i.e., date, journal, authors, type of study and methods for data collection). </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 2 sought to better understand the adaptation initiatives treated in the paper. Here, we analysed 5 variables (the adaptation solutions type, sectors, benefits, scale, and location). </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 3 collected characteristics of the climate change adaptation co-production process, including the definition of co-production, the type of the co-production process, its outputs, and the methods used to engage stakeholders. </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 4 described the factors that enable or hinder the co-production process and their influence on different aspects of the process. After naming and defining each driver, we recorded the main type of factor, its impact, origin, and spatial and temporal scale of influence; the stakeholders who were responsible for and influenced by the factor, and the impacts on the various steps and outcomes of the co-production process.</span></p> <span> </span></li> </ul>

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br> In this study, we present a laboratory setup for the deoxidation of 10 × 10 mm2 samples via dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and we show results for the deoxidation of copper in an Ar/H2 atmosphere at 1000 hPa. The effect of combined heat and DBD plasma treatment was investigated by heating surfaces up to 250 °C during plasma operation. All results were compared for surfaces before and after plasma treatment. The chemical structure of surfaces was studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and the morphology was measured via Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Additionally, the properties of the plasma during the reduction of copper oxides were investigated via Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES).</p>

Data for: Faster evolution of a premating reproductive barrier is not associated with faster speciation rates in New World passerine birds
<p>Why are speciation rates so variable across the tree of life? One hypothesis is that this variation is explained by how rapidly reproductive barriers evolve. We tested this hypothesis by conducting a comparative study of the evolution of bird song, a premating barrier to reproduction. Speciation in birds is typically initiated when geographically isolated (allopatric) populations evolve reproductive barriers. We measured the strength of song as a premating barrier between closely related allopatric populations by conducting 2,339 field experiments to measure song discrimination for 175 taxon pairs of allopatric or parapatric New World passerine birds, and estimated recent speciation rates from a global molecular phylogeny of birds. Taxon pairs with high song discrimination in allopatry failed to regularly interbreed in parapatry, evidence that song discrimination is indeed an important reproductive barrier. However, evolutionary rates of song discrimination were not associated with recent speciation rates, and song discrimination evolves faster in suboscine passerines than their more species-rich sister clade, the oscines. Our findings support the long-held idea that song is a key premating reproductive barrier in birds, but show that faster evolution of this reproductive barrier between populations does not result in faster diversification betweeen species.</p>
Dataset for "Thresholds in road network functioning on US Atlantic and Gulf barrier islands"
<p>This dataset accompanies the paper "Thresholds in road network functioning on US Atlantic and Gulf barrier islands" (<a href="https://doi.org/10.31223/X55D1G">https://doi.org/10.31223/X55D1G</a>) and is intended to be used to reproduce the analysis. In this dataset you can find the graphml files generated for each island (103 islands with drivable roads). Each intersection of the island road network is a node, and has an associated elevation and extreme water level value. Also included are the statistics for each network, and a single table with the analysis results for each of the networks with >100 nodes.</p>
Raw and analyzed data for manuscript "Dielectric barrier discharge plasma reduction of oxidized copper surfaces in an Ar/SiH4 atmosphere"
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Nowadays, cold plasma techniques like dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas have attracted considerable interest in view of high deoxidation efficiencies as well as relative simplicity of setups. Although DBD plasma deoxidation of copper has been mainly studied in Ar/H<sub>2</sub> mixtures, there is no information on reduction performance of such methods in other protective atmospheres. In this study, the reduction of natively oxidized copper surfaces using a DBD plasma in an Ar/SiH<sub>4</sub> atmosphere at 100 hPa and 20 °C was investigated. The influence of a silane gas on the deoxidation performance was studied by varying the SiH<sub>4</sub> concentration from 0.0 to 0.5 vol%. An addition of a SiH<sub>4</sub> gas to an Ar atmosphere results in the increase of the deoxidation effect of a DBD plasma, so almost all Cu<sub>2</sub>O was reduced after around 10 s of treatment in 0.1 vol% silane. Surface morphology analysis showed formation of particles after Ar/SiH<sub>4</sub> plasma treatments, which can be cleaned from the surfaces by wiping. Additionally, characterization of the plasma phase indicated the presence of SiH<sup>*</sup> radicals, which likely play a role in the deoxidation effect. Moreover, an elimination of residual oxygen and nitrogen species in Ar by addition of SiH<sub>4</sub> was observed.</p>
Survey questionnaire and results on Structural Barriers to Investment in Energy Efficiency Policies in the Private Rented Sector
<p>The online survey was designed and conducted in the framework of the EU H2020 project ENPOR ("Actions to Mitigate Energy Poverty in the Private Rented Sector). The aim of the survey was to receive statistically sound insights on structural factors that affect the implementation of energy efficiency policies for the alleviation of energy poverty in the European Private Rented Sector. We developed it as an explorative, semi-quantitative, self-completion online questionnaire, using the online tool “EUSurvey”. We performed the online survey among different stakeholders from academia, policy, NGO’s, landlords and tenant associations, etc.</p>
How flexible, slit and rigid barriers mitigate two-phase geophysical mass flows: a numerical appraisal
<p>The supplementary videos SV1 and SV2 (presented in Figures 4 and 5) show geophysical flows impacting flexible, slit, and rigid barriers via pile-up mode and runup mode, respectively.</p> <p>The measurement data used for comparison in Figure 7 from 14 centrifuge tests with bouldery and the boulder-debris mixture flows (Song et al., 2018b, 2019), and dry granular flow against open-type dams (Choi et al., 2020) were published open access in their articles.</p> <p>The unique dataset, comprising normalized data obtained from analytical models (Li et al., 2021; Song et al., 2021a), empirical relations (Cui et al., 2015), experiments (Armanini et al., 2020; Choi et al., 2020; Cui et al., 2015; Hu et al., 2020; Song et al., 2021a, 2021b; Tiberghien et al., 2007; Vicari et al., 2021), field events (Hübl et al., 2009), and practical design values (Armanini, 1997; Hungr et al., 1984; Kwan & Cheung, 2012; Wendeler, 2016), is plotted in Figure 10 for comparison.</p> <p>All these articles can be found in the PDF file entitled “References in Figures 7 and 10”.</p>
Close kin dyads indicate intergenerational dispersal and barriers
<p>The movement of individuals through continuous space is typically constrained by dispersal ability and dispersal barriers. A range of approaches have been developed to investigate these. Kindisperse is a new approach that infers intergenerational dispersal (σ) from close kin dyads, and appears particularly useful for investigating taxa that are difficult to observe individually. This study, focusing on the mosquito <em>Aedes aegypti</em>, shows how the same close kin data can also be used for barrier detection. We empirically demonstrate this new extension of the method using genome-wide sequence data from 266 <em>Ae. aegypti</em>. First, we use the spatial distribution of full-sib dyads collected within one generation to infer past movements of ovipositing female mosquitoes. These dyads indicated the relative barrier strengths of two roads, and performed favourably against alternative genetic methods for detecting barriers. The difference in variance between the sib and first cousin spatial distributions was used to infer movement over the past two generations, providing estimates of intergenerational dispersal (σ = 81.5-197.1 m.gen-1/2) and density (ρ = 833-4864 km-2). Dispersal estimates showed general agreement with those from mark-release-recapture studies. Barriers, σ, ρ, and neighbourhood size (331-526) can inform forthcoming releases of dengue-suppressing <em>Wolbachia</em> bacteria into this mosquito population.</p>

<p>Removal of oxygen contaminations from metal surfaces during industrial fabrication processes is an important cleaning step mitigating the negative impact of native oxide layers on the performance of compounds. Different plasma deoxidation techniques were developed to remove such oxide layers. Although a large number of studies were focused on of low-pressure plasma techniques, there is the lack of information on the deoxidation effect of plasmas that operate in the atmospheric pressure range.</p>

<p>This study explored the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of a risk-based breast cancer screening program from the point of view of Spanish health professionals. A cross-sectional study with 220 Spanish health professionals was designed. Data were collected in 2020 via a web-based survey and included advantages and disadvantages of risk-based screening and barriers and facilitators for the implementation of the program. Descriptive statistics and Likert scale responses analyzed as category-ordered data were obtained. Risk-based screening was considered important or very important to reduce breast cancer mortality and promote a more proactive role for women in breast cancer prevention, to increase coverage for women under 50 years, to promote a breast cancer prevention strategy for women at high risk and to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Switching to a risk-based program from an age-based program was rated as important or very important by 85% of participants. As barriers for implementation, risk communication, workload of health professionals and limited human and financial resources were mentioned. Despite the barriers, there is good acceptance and it seems feasible, from the perspective of health professionals, to implement a risk-based breast cancer screening program in Spain. However, this poses a number of organizational and resource challenges.</p>
Seascape genetics in a polychaete worm: Disentangling the roles of a biogeographic barrier and environmental factors
<p><strong>Aim:</strong> Seascape genomics studies aim to understand how environmental variables shape species diversity through genotype-environment associations. Identifying these effects on lecithotrophic larval species that live in intertidal zones is particularly challenging because they are subject to environmental heterogeneity and anthropogenic events. Here, we evaluate how biotic and abiotic features in the Southwest Atlantic littoral zone can affect a high dispersal species' present and historical demographic.</p> <p><strong>Taxon:</strong> <em>Perinereis ponteni.</em></p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>We investigated population genetic diversity, connectivity, and past dynamics using 23,300 SNPs generated using Genotyping by sequencing. We tested whether environmental abiotic variables could explain the variance found in genotype frequencies using isolation-by-environment (IBE) and landscape association approaches. These data, combined with paleodistribution simulations and oceanic circulation modeling, were used to infer species demographic history and connectivity patterns.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Along with high levels of connectivity detected, we found a genetic boundary in the southeastern region of Brazil around Cabo Frio (Rio de Janeiro) and a cline trend for some loci. The paleodistribution simulations reveal a spatial refuge in the southeast during the Last Glacial Maximum (21 kya), with the expansion of the northern region. We identified 1,421 SNPs with frequencies associated with eight environmental variables, most of which were related to temperature - the main environmental factor determining IBE.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions:</strong> <em>Perinereis ponteni</em>, a polychaete with high gene flow capability responds to biogeographic barriers, highlighting the importance of biotic and abiotic factors in shaping population connectivity. Furthermore, the effect of temperature indicates that future climate change and ocean warming can hugely impact this species.</p>

Dogs do not use their own experience with novel barriers to infer others' visual access
<p>Despite extensive research into the Theory of Mind abilities in nonhuman animals, it remains controversial whether they can attribute mental states to other individuals or whether they merely predict future behaviour based on previous behavioural cues. In the present study, we tested pet dogs (in total, N=92) on adaptations of the "goggles test" previously used with human infants and great apes. In both a cooperative and a competitive task, dogs were given direct experience with the properties of novel screens (one opaque, the other transparent) inserted into identical, but differently coloured, tunnels. Dogs learned and remembered the properties of the screens even when, later on, these were no longer directly visible to them. Nevertheless, they were not more likely to follow the experimenter's gaze to a target object when the experimenter could see it through the transparent screen. Further, they did not prefer to steal a forbidden treat first in a location obstructed from the experimenter's view by the opaque screen. Therefore, dogs did not show perspective-taking abilities in this study in which the only available cue to infer others' visual access consisted of the subjects' own previous experience with novel visual barriers. We conclude that the behaviour of our dogs, unlike that of infants and apes in previous studies, does not show evidence of experience projection abilities.</p>
