Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Site Boundaries

This is a set of Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site boundaries preserved as a shapefile. Note that for some sites “real” boundaries are included while others–particularly marine sites–use a simpler bounding box method. Each site is listed both with its three-letter abbreviation and its unabbreviated name. World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) is the coordinate reference system used (EPSG:4326). More information about any of the sites can be found on the LTER Site Profiles page on the LTER Network website (https://lternet.edu/site). This data product was made possible by the contributions of the Information Managers for the LTER sites, each of whom contributed their sites' boundaries. This version of the data includes the following changes from the prior version: - Arctic (ARC) updated - Cedar Creek (CDR) updated - Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) updated - Harvard Forest (HFR) updated - Konza Prairie (KNZ) updated - McMurdo Dry Valleys (MCM) updated - Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) updated

Salinity is diagnostic of maximum potential chlorophyll and phytoplankton community structure in an Eastern Boundary Upwelling System

Coastal upwelling ecosystems associated with strong physical stirring exhibit fine-scale hydrographic and biological patchiness. Though many studies have found broad correlations between hydrographic properties (e.g., temperature and salinity) and phytoplankton biomass, we lack a detailed understanding of the underlying mechanisms and how to diagnose patchy distributions. Here, using observational data from coastal waters in the California Current System, we demonstrate that the maximum observed chlorophyll in a water parcel increases with salinity—a conservative water-mass tracer. This relationship arises from sub-euphotic zone nitrate concentrations, which also increase with salinity. Therefore, we can define maximum potential chlorophyll as a function of salinity and nitrate. We show that variations in salinity explain patterns in phytoplankton community structure and discuss how growth, grazing, and light and micronutrient limitation can generate chlorophyll values below the maximum potential. Our mechanistic explanation provides a novel framework for diagnosing biological patchiness using salinity observations.

Adminstrative boundary, Andrews Experimental Forest, 1997 survey, 2009 update

This database contains the spatial representations for the administrative boundary of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. This database was derived from ground based surveys of the Andrews in 1997, based on the Experimental Forest Establishment report. Field personnel determined ridge tops. The original data was updated in 2009 (entity 2) and contains the boundaries of watershed 9, 10. and 11(which are outside Lookout Basin) as updated in 2009, in addition to the Lookout Creek Basin.

Inventory of soil prokaryotic microbiome (via 16S based on rRNA gene amplicons) in freshwater and brackish water marshes following saltwater intrusion along Shark River Slough boundary, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, September 2018

Global sea-level rise is transforming coastal ecosystems, especially freshwater wetlands, in part due to increased episodic or chronic saltwater exposure, leading to shifts in microbial communities and related ecological services. Soil prokaryotes play a fundamental role in regulating important biogeochemical processes in coastal wetland ecosystem. Yet, it is still difficult to predict how soil prokaryotic communities respond to the saltwater exposure because of poorly understood prokaryotic sensitivity within complex wetland soil microbial communities, as well as the high heterogeneity of wetland soils and saltwater exposure. To address this, a four-year experimental simulation of saltwater intrusion in a pristine freshwater site and a previously saltwater-impacted site was conducted. The saltwater addition started in October 2014 on a monthly basis and continued through October 2018. The dataset contains amplicon sequencing date of 16S rRNA gene obtained from saltwater-exposed soils and unmanipulated native soils in both sites (collected in September 2018). The 2018 data are published in Zhao et al. 2023. A detailed list of sequence data and their accession numbers in GenBank is provided, and data collection is complete. This data package is an inventory of sequence read archive (SRA) entries available through GenBank BioProject PRJNA804545 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bioproject/?term=PRJNA804545). This data package is associated with the following publication: Zhao, J., Chakrabarti, S., Chambers, R., Weisenhorn, P., Travieso, R., Stumpf, S., Standen, E., Briceno, H., Troxler, T., Gaiser, E., Kominoski, J., Dhillon, B., & Martens-Habbena, W. White Mountain National Forest Boundary: GIS Shapefile

This dataset contains the White Mountain National Forest Boundary. The boundary was extracted from the National Forest boundaries coverage for the lower 48 states, including Puerto Rico developed by the USDA Forest Service - Geospatial Service and Technology Center. The coverage was projected from decimal degrees to UTM zone 19. This dataset includes administrative unit boundaries, derived primarily from the GSTC SOC data system, comprised of Cartographic Feature Files (CFFs), using ESRI Spatial Data Engine (SDE) and an Oracle database. The data that was available in SOC was extracted on November 10, 1999. Some of the data that had been entered into SOC was outdated, and some national forest boundaries had never been entered for a variety of reasons. The USDA Forest Service, Geospatial Service and Technology Center has edited this data in places where it was questionable or missing, to match the National Forest Inventoried Roadless Area data submitted for the President's Roadless Area Initiative. Data distributed as shapefile in Coordinate system EPSG:26919 - NAD83 / UTM zone 19N.
