The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) contains water temperature (mean) measurements in celsius units and were aggregated to a monthly timescale.

Data from: Persistent near real-time passive acoustic monitoring for baleen whales from a moored buoy: system description and evaluation
1. Managing interactions between human activities and marine mammals often relies on an understanding of the real-time distribution or occurrence of animals. Visual surveys typically cannot provide persistent monitoring because of expense and weather limitations, and while passive acoustic recorders can monitor continuously, the data they collect are often not accessible until the recorder is recovered. 2. We have developed a moored passive acoustic monitoring system that provides near real-time occurrence estimates for humpback, sei, fin, and North Atlantic right whales from a single site for a year, and makes those occurrence estimates available via a publicly accessible website, email and text messages, a smartphone/tablet app, and the U.S. Coast Guard's maritime domain awareness software. We evaluated this system using a buoy deployed off the coast of Massachusetts during 2015-2016 and redeployed again during 2016-2017. Near real-time estimates of whale occurrence were compared to simultaneously collected archived audio as well as whale sightings collected near the buoy by aerial surveys. 3. False detection rates for right, humpback, and sei whales were 0% and nearly 0% for fin whales, while missed detection rates at daily time scales were modest (12-42%). Missed detections were significantly associated with low calling rates for all species. We observed strong associations between right whale visual sightings and near real-time acoustic detections over a monitoring range of 30-40 km and temporal scales of 24-48 hours, suggesting that silent animals were not especially problematic for estimating occurrence of right whales in the study area. There was no association between acoustic detections and visual sightings of humpback whales. 4. The moored buoy has been used to reduce the risk of ship strikes for right whales in a U.S. Coast Guard gunnery range, and can be applied to other mitigation applications.
Unlocking the Fluorine-Free Buoy Effect: Surface-Enriched Ruthenium Polypyridine Complexes in Ionic Liquids, DOI: 10.1002/open.202400092
<p>Controlling the local concentration of metal complexes at the surface of ionic liquids (ILs) is a highly sought-after objective due to its pivotal implications in supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysis. Equally important is to avoid per- and polyfluorinated substances due to environmental concerns. Herein, we investigate the surface enrichment of Ru polypyridyl complexes with fluorine-free alkylic side groups of varying lengths and shapes, using the hydrophilic IL [C<sub>2</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][OAc] as solvent. Additional charged carboxylate groups are included into the polypyridyl ligands to increase the solubility of the complex in the IL. When the ligand system is functionalized with long and hydrophobic alkyl side chains, the complex predominantly localizes at the IL/vacuum interface, as deduced from angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Conversely, in the presence of short or more bulky substituents, no surface enrichment is observed. This buoy-like behaviour with fluorine-free side groups is explored for 0.05 %<sub>mol</sub> to 1 %<sub>mol</sub> solutions. Intriguingly, surface saturation occurs at approximately 0.5 %<sub>mol</sub>, which is beneficial to the efficient operation of catalytic systems featuring high surface areas, such as SILP catalysts.</p>

AIMS - Dataset from moored gridded wave buoys in the Tyrrhenian Sea
<p>This dataset is part of the AIMS project (Artificial Intelligence to Monitor our Seas), which has the vision to develop and validate novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to unlock the true potential of remote monitoring and enable a faster transition to a climate neutral society and economy: the AI algorithms will leverage the advantages of usual monitoring methodologies of the features of waves and offshore wind, and eventually overcome their intrinsic limitations. The value and resolution of sparse measurements of satellites and unevenly-distributed in-situ instruments will be increased, hence leading to a significant reduction of the cost and execution time of data collection, ultimately making knowledge wider and more accessible.</p> <p>This dataset in particular ir related to collection of a moored Directional Wave Spectra Drifter (DWSD) buoy network deployed offshore of Livorno as part of the AIMS project. The campaign aimed to create an experimental 3 x 3 buoy grid, positioned at 1.5 km intervals, to study wave dynamics in a confined area and evaluate the accuracy of numerical wave models. Each buoy, equipped with GPS and real-time data transmission via satellite, recorded wave and meteo-marine parameters at three-hour intervals over approximately five months. The data, though partially affected by buoy losses, provide a high-resolution view of wave behaviour and serve as a valuable resource for wave energy studies and forecasting models. This report includes detailed descriptions of the dataset and its structure, offering insights into data quality, operational challenges, and guidelines for future campaigns.</p> <p> </p>

A New Frontier in Ionospheric Observations: GPS Total Electron Content Measurements from Ocean Buoys

IPAB Antarctic Drifting Buoy Data, Version 1
Through participating research organizations in various countries, the World Climate Research Programme's (WCRP) International Programme for Antarctic Buoys (IPAB) maintains a network of drifting buoys in the Antarctic sea ice zone to support a better understanding of sea ice motion, meteorology, and oceanography. The IPAB Antarctic Drifting Buoy Data archive, spanning the years 1995 to 1998, includes measurements of buoy position, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and sea surface temperature. Data are organized by daily and three-hour averages and are provided as raw, instantaneous, non-interpolated data values. Data were collected from buoys initially deployed in the following three study regions: East Antarctica; the Weddell Sea; and the Bellingshausen, Amundsen, and Ross Seas.

Understanding the Buoy Effect of Surface-Enriched Pt Complexes in Ionic Liquids: A Combined ARXPS and Pendant Drop Study**, DOI: 10.1002/cphc.202300612
<p>Recently, we demonstrated that Pt catalyst complexes dissolved in the ionic liquid (IL) [C<sub>4</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][PF<sub>6</sub>] can be deliberately enriched at the IL surface by introducing perfluorinated substituents, which act like buoys dragging the metal complex towards the surface. Herein, we extend our previous angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) studies at complex concentrations between 30 and 5 %<sub>mol</sub> down to 1 %<sub>mol</sub> and present complementary surface tension pendant drop (PD) measurements under ultraclean vacuum conditions. This combination allows for connecting the microscopic information on the IL/gas interface derived from ARXPS with the macroscopic property surface tension. The surface enrichment of the Pt complexes is found to be most pronounced at 1 %<sub>mol</sub>. It also displays a strong temperature dependence, which was not observed for 5 %<sub>mol</sub> and above, where the surface is already saturated with the complex. The surface enrichment deduced from ARXPS is also reflected by the pronounced decrease in surface tension with increasing concentration of the catalyst. We furthermore observe by ARXPS and PD a much stronger surface affinity of the buoy-complex as compared to the free ligands in solution. Our results are highly interesting for an optimum design of IL-based catalyst systems with large contact areas to the surrounding reactant/product phase, such as in supported IL phase (SILP) catalysis.</p>
