Data from: Extensive yellow crusts below limestone overhangs: a new taxon close to a minute epiphytic lichen
A conspicuous yellow crust forming extensive covers on some dry and shaded limestone rocks in Europe is described here as Caloplaca substerilis subsp. orbicularis M. Haji Moniri, Vondrák & Malíček subsp. nov. Based on nuITS rDNA, 28S nuLSU rDNA and mtSSU rDNA sequence data, the new taxon is closely related to Caloplaca sterilis and C. ulcerosa. The three taxa form a supported clade in the subfamily Xanthorioideae (Teloschistaceae), but none of the recent genera are suitable for them. In the ITS phylogeny, the new taxon forms a monophylum nested within C. substerilis. Its extensive yellow thalli and absence of vegetative diaspores clearly distinguish it from Caloplaca substerilis (subsp. substerilis). Indeed, if it had not been for the molecular evidence, we would have described it at the rank of species. We suggest that the substrate switch and accompanying processes are responsible for the striking phenotype difference between Caloplaca substerilis subsp. substerilis and C. substerilis subsp. orbicularis.

Mercury isotope trace magma mixing and crust-mantle interactions in the Yidun arc, eastern Tibetan Plateau
<p>Magma mixing between mafic and felsic melts is widespread in open magmatic process. However, tracing the magma sources of different endmembers is challenging, because elemental and isotopic information of different endmembers commonly achieved equilibrium during magma interactions. Mantle and crustal reservoirs show distinct signatures of mercury (Hg) isotope mass-independent fractionation, making Hg isotope an emerging tool to trace mantle- and crustal-derived magmas. Here we report the Hg isotope data of two types (Type-I and Type-II) of mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) and their host granitoids, which have similar whole-rock Sr-Nd and zircon Hf isotope composition, from the Daocheng-Cuojiaoma batholith, Eastern Tibetan Plateau, SW China. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates both the host granitoids and two types of MMEs formed coevally at ca. 216 – 217 Ma, coherent to the subduction of Garzê–Litang ocean (a branch of Paleo-Tethys ocean). The host granitoids are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous characteristics (A/CNK = 0.98 – 1.05) and exhibit negative to slightly positive ∆<sup>199</sup>Hg values (-0.2 to 0.02 ‰), indicating their source magma was a mixture of terrestrial sediments- and mantle-derived melts. Type-I MMEs display arc-like trace element patterns, low SiO<sub>2</sub> (53.8 to 55.0 wt%) and positive ∆<sup>199</sup>Hg values (0.00 to 0.10 ‰), indicating their derivation from a subduction-related fluid/melt metasomatized mantle source. Type-II MMEs show intervening concentrations of major/trace elements, and intermediate ∆<sup>199</sup>Hg values (-0.18 to 0.02), suggesting they were generated via mixing between the temporally and spatially coexisting first two magmas (i.e., type-I MMEs and granitoid). This study demonstrates the powerful use of Hg isotope for understanding magma sources and crustal-mantle interactions.</p>

Multiple diversity facets of crucial microbial groups in biological soil crusts promote soil multifunctionality
<p>Aim: Microbial diversity is one of the most important factors for maintaining the performance of multiple functions in soils (multifunctionality). However, existing studies typically consider taxonomic richness or Shannon diversity of the entire community. We know little about the connection network of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity facets and their collective impact on multifunctionality. In this study, the linkages of diversity effects within functional groups were disentangled in drylands.</p> <p>Location: The central Tibetan Plateau.</p> <p>Time period: Present.</p> <p>Major taxa studied: Phototrophs and diazotrophs (mainly cyanobacteria).</p> <p>Methods: Given the carbon- and nitrogen-limited nature of drylands, we conducted a high throughput sequencing of C/N-fixing functional groups from biocrusts and evaluated multiple diversity facets (i.e., richness, evenness, and phylogeny-related trait dissimilarity), together with seven crucial variables of soil functioning to calculate multifunctionality. The relations between multifaceted diversity and abundance with individual functions and multifunctionality were validated by a set of solid statistical analyses.</p> <p>Results: We found that the integrated biodiversity index was a stronger predictor of multifunctionality than richness. The divergent performance of different diversity facets determined the idiosyncratic effect of each functional group on soil multifunctionality. Moreover, the evaluation of functional significance at the species level gave important clues on the trade-offs and redundancy in each functional group, explaining the distinct patterns of diversity effects. Namely, richness was the dominant factor for diazotrophs to maximize multifunctionality, whereas phylogenetic dissimilarity was the essential one for phototrophs.</p> <p>Main conclusions: our study demonstrated that multiple diversity facets should be considered when grasping the biodiversity effects. In contrast with the community level, within-functional group measures may adequately capture the features of diversity that are most correlated with soil multifunctionality. Our results provided a perspective to bridge the gap between taxonomic and trait-based approaches for elucidating the biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship.</p>

Strength, depth, and geometry of magnetic sources in the crust of the Moon from localized power spectrum analysis
<p>This archive contains data files that can be used to reproduce Figures 7-10 in the article</p> <blockquote> <p>Wieczorek, M. A. (2018) Strength, depth, and geometry of magnetic sources in the crust of the Moon from localized power spectrum analysis, J. Geophys. Res. Planets.</p> </blockquote> <p>The data files contain the final inversion results for the model using magnetized sills, where the full magnetic field to spherical-harmonic degree 449 was employed. For each localized analysis, the best 6 orthogonal localization windows were used that maximized their power within a spherical cap with an angular radius of 8 degrees and with a spherical-harmonic bandwidth of 58. The analyses were performed at the vertices of a quasi equal-area grid with a spacing corresponding to five degrees of latitude. For these models, the file names start with "sills_449_8_58_5". Each file contains the latitude and longitude (in degrees) of the localization analysis, as well as one other value.</p> <p><br> FILE DESCRIPTIONS</p> <p>sills_449_8_58_5_minchi2r.dat</p> <p>This file contains the minimum reduced chi<sup>2</sup> value of the best-fitting model for each analysis. Obduction of the lower crust contributing to the uplift of the Longmen Shan revealed by receiver function imaging in eastern Tibet
<p>To investigate the crustal deformation of the Longmenshan region, we imaged the fine crustal structure by using teleseismic P-wave receiver functions (RFs) along a dense nodal seismic array across the LMS and removed the scattered surface waves generated by the steep topography. This folder uploaded includes the raw data used to RFs ('LMS_raw_data_SH_2017_2018_NEZ'), the calculated RFs ('LMS_RFs_SH_2017_2018'), the RFs with removing the topographic scatters ('LMS_RFs_SH_2017_2018_rmsc'), the crustal image data (the common conversion point (CCP) stacking of RFs)('CCP_LMS.txt'), and the crustal image data after removing the topographic scatters ('CCP_LMS_Remove_scatters.txt'). The folders for raw data and RFs are stored according to events, and the files under each event folder start with the station number. The raw data and the RFs are in SAC format. </p>
