Irradiance measurements, satellite images, and clear-sky expectations for Spring 2014 in Tucson, AZ.

<p>This dataset contains the metadata and measurements from a number of irradiance sensors and rooftop solar power systems in addition to clear-sky expectations for those sensors. Irradiance derived from images from the GOES-W satellite are also included. The dataset covers April, May, and June 2014 over the Tucson, AZ, area. Unveiling women's expectations as ICT professionals: A survey study

<p>Several studies report the positive impacts of gender diversity on software development teams. However, it is common knowledge that women face many challenges to remain in the job market, especially in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Goal: This paper investigates the perception of ICT women practitioners about their expectations in the job market, mainly concerning salary expectations, work performance and experience, incentive policies, and satisfaction. Method: We surveyed 192 women who work or have worked in the Brazilian software industry. We used mixed methods to analyze the data. Results: Our findings reveal that around 41% of the women are satisfied with the current salary and approximately 23% of them have a full seniority level. Furthermore, more than half of ICT practitioners stated that their work performance was consistent with their professional growth. Conclusions: Although women ICT practitioners have not met their expectations about their professional goals, they are satisfied with their performance in the job market.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

The survey used asked the informants to provide their opinion regarding different statements in a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). <p>These videos were produced as part of a PhD project titled, &quot;Investigating optometric and orthoptic conditions in autistic adults&quot;,&nbsp;at The University of Manchester. Dogs' looking times and pupil dilation response reveal expectations about contact causality

<p>Contact causality is one of the fundamental principles allowing us to make sense of our physical environment. From an early age, humans perceive spatiotemporally contiguous launching events as causal. Surprisingly little is known about causal perception in nonhuman animals, particularly outside the primate order. Violation-of-expectation paradigms in combination with eye-tracking and pupillometry have been used to study physical expectations in human infants. In the current study, we establish this approach for dogs (Canis familiaris). We presented dogs with realistic 3D animations of launching events with contact (regular launching event) or without contact between the involved objects. In both conditions, the objects moved with the same timing and kinematic properties. The dogs tracked the object movements closely throughout the study but their pupils were larger in the No-contact condition and they looked longer at the object initiating the launch after the No-contact event compared to the Contact event. We conclude that dogs have implicit expectations about contact causality.</p>

Complex landscapes stabilize farm bird communities and their expected ecosystem services

<p>1. Birds play many roles within agroecosystems including as consumers of crops and pests, carriers of pathogens, and beloved icons. Birds are also rapidly declining across North America, in part due to agricultural intensification. Thus, it is imperative to identify how to manage agroecosystems to best support birds for multi-functional outcomes (e.g., crop production and conservation). Both the average amounts of services/disservices provided and their temporal stability are important for effective farm planning.</p> <p>2. Here, we conducted point-count surveys for four years across 106 locations on 27 diversified farms in Washington and Oregon, USA. We classified birds as ecosystem service or disservice providers using indices spanning supporting, regulating, provisioning, and cultural services/disservices. We then examined service/disservice index pairwise correlations and assessed the relative importance of local, farm, and landscape complexity on the average and temporal stability of avian service/disservice provider indices.</p> <p>3. Generally, service provider indices (production benefitting birds, grower appreciation, and conservation scores) were positively correlated with each other. Foodborne pathogen risk, grower disapproval, and identity/iconic value indices were also positively correlated with each other. However, the crop damaging bird index generally had low correlations with other indices.</p> <p>4. Farms that implemented more conservation-friendly management practices generally had higher average service provider indices, but farm management did not impact disservice provider indices, except for grower disapproval. Average disservice provider indices were lower on farms in complex landscapes.</p> <p>5. Local vertical vegetation complexity tended to increase the temporal stability of service provider indices but did not affect the disservice provider indices. Greater landscape complexity was generally associated with increased temporal stability of service and disservice provider indices. Increased landscape complexity may stabilize bird communities by increasing bird community evenness, which in turn, positively predicted temporal stability of all service/disservice provider indices.</p> <p>6. <i>Policy implications</i>: Our results suggest that farmers can effectively manage their farms to harness ecosystem services from birds through farm diversification. Disservices provided by birds, however, appear to be most negatively impacted by landscape-level complexity. Thus, greater incentives for farmers to increase seminatural cover at the landscape-scale are likely necessary to achieve multifunctional outcomes for conservation and agriculture.</p>

Label-based expectations affect reward perception in bumblebees

<p>While classic models of animal decision-making assume that individuals objectively assess the absolute value of options, decades of research have shown that rewards are often evaluated relative to prior experience, creating 'contrast effects'. Contrast effects are often assumed to be purely sensory, yet consumer psychology tells us that label-based expectations can affect value perception. However, this has rarely been tested in non-model systems. Bumblebees forage on a variety of flower types that vary in their signals and rewards and show clear contrast effects when rewards are lower than their immediate previous experience. Here we manipulated bees' expectations of a stimulus' quality, before downshifting the reward to induce incentive contrast. We found that contrast effects were not solely driven by prior experience with a better reward, but also influenced by experience with associated stimuli. Bees were faster to accept the lower-quality reward when it was paired with a novel rather than a familiar stimulus. We then explored the boundaries of these label-based expectations by testing bees along a stimulus gradient and found that expectations generalized to similar stimuli. Such reference-dependent evaluations may play an important role in bees' foraging choices, with the potential to impact floral evolution and plant community dynamics.</p>

Coevolution of relative brain size and life expectancy in parrots

<p><span><span><span><span>Previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between longevity and brain size in a variety of taxa. Little research has been devoted to understanding this link in parrots; yet parrots are well-known for both their exceptionally long lives and cognitive complexity. We employed a large-scale comparative analysis that investigated the influence of brain size and life history variables on longevity in parrots. Specifically, we addressed two hypotheses for evolutionary drivers of longevity: the <em>Cognitive Buffer Hypothesis</em>, which proposes that increased cognitive abilities enable longer life spans, and the <em>Expensive Brain Hypothesis</em>, which holds that increases in life span are caused by prolonged developmental time of, and increased parental investment in, large-brained offspring<em>. </em>We estimated life expectancy from detailed zoo records for 133,818 individuals across 244 parrot species. Using a principled Bayesian approach that addresses data uncertainty and imputation of missing values, we found a consistent correlation between relative brain size and life expectancy in parrots. This correlation was best explained by a direct effect of relative brain size. Notably, we found no effects of developmental time, clutch size, or age at first reproduction. Our results suggest that selection for enhanced cognitive abilities in parrots have in turn promoted longer lifespans.</span></span></span></span></p>

Data for The genetics monopolistic industry, as expected, is missing information two inches beyond their nose: in this case, transcripts

<p><strong>De novo transcriptome assembly is one of the many fundamental pieces of new research in genomics. It is, for example, the preferred method for studying non-model organisms, since it is easier and cheaper than building a genome, and reference methods are not possible without an existing genome. The transcriptomes of these organisms can thus reveal novel proteins and their isoforms that are implicated in such unique biological phenomena. This technique is also useful in cancer research as it makes possible to detect potentially significant chimeric transcripts in cancer and normal somatic tissues.</strong></p> <p><strong>Given that the genetics industry is organized in the form of a monopoly controlled by hidden lobbies who also control Academia, all the available software for de novo transcriptome assembly is being developed by academic researchers under the open-source paradigm. We report here, that as anyone could have very easily deduced from past experiences in other industries, this unethical form of organization in the industry is resulting in incompetence whose effects include missing a significant portion of the available information that could be obtained from some genomics studies. In this case, missing transcripts in transcriptome studies. We won&#39;t deep in on the consequences, but these could include overpricing, over costs, and failing to achieve the goals of some studies.</strong></p>

Lastly, the database was implemented into the MODeLING.Vis toolbox and the variables were imported into arrays. Those arrays indexed a linear matrix of the variables: Molecular Bands Subgroups (kDa) and Concentration (ng/&micro;l) of each sample (subject).
