Five-minute average cruise track and ship velocity of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.

Dataset abstract

The ship's cruise track, velocity, course over ground and heading at one-minute resolution for all five legs of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) are derived from a combination of:
- the latitude/longitude record of the Quality-checked, one-second cruise track for 21.12.2016 to 11.04.2017.
- the latitude/longitude record of the Uncorrected inertial navigation dataset (one-second resolution) for 27.11.2016 to 21.12.2016
- the latitude/longitude record of the raw meteorological data (30-second resolution) from 17.11.2016 to 27.11.2016
- where no latitude/longitude record at one-second resolution is available and the ship's velocity was above 2 meters per second, the three-second resolution record of the true and relative wind speed and direction, as well as the heading are used to re-calculate the ship's velocity under the assumption that the course of the ship equalled the heading.

Basic filtering are applied to remove erroneous observations before the data are averaged to a one-minute resolution (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3752667).
The one-minute time series are averaged to five-minute resolution, whereby the vector averaging is used for the platform velocity and orientation.
For the latitude and longitude coordinates a simple average is calcualted, i.e., ignoring the curvature of the Earth.
Short stretches of missing coordinates are filled with linear interpolation between neighbouring observations.

Dataset contents

cruise-track-5min-legs0-4.csv, data file, comma-separated values

data_file_header, metadata, text format

README.txt, metadata, text format

ace-cruise-track-5min-legs0-4-change-log.txt, metadata, text format

Change log

v1.1 - Added additional data coverage from 2016-11-17 - 2016-11-22 inclusive. Still images from the KuramBio expedition 2012 (Stations 3-6, 8-11) obtained with the Ocean Floor Observation System

Repository with still images obtained from the videos of the KuramBio 2012 expedition in 5 second intervals. Still images belong to deep-sea stations where the Ocean Floor Observation System (OFOS) was deployed and enough video survey was obtained (i.e., Stations 3-6, 8-11). The Station 7 survey length was enough but has no HD video. Thus, images were not retrieved since the quality does not allow accurate lebensspuren or benthic fauna identification.

The OFOS was lowered into the water at the CTD position. The first 300 meters lowering was conducted with 0.5 m/sec, and then the speed was increased to 0.8 m/sec while the ship was kept in position. At 500 meters above ground the speed was reduced to 0.5 m/sec, and further reduced to 0.3 m/sec at 200 meters above ground. As soon as visual contact with the bottom was established, the winch was stopped. The ship started moving with 0.5 knots in the appropriate direction, which was chosen depending on current and wind situation at the according station. The OFOS was kept in an appropriate distance to the seafloor, enabling the scientists to watch the macrofaunal organisms. The approximate size of the observed animals could be calculated with the help of two laser pointers having a distance of 10 cm between each other (see Fig. 1-3). Generally, the survey lasted slightly over one hour, then the ship was stopped and heaving of the OFOS started. This was first conducted at 0.5 m/sec and accelerated to 1.0 m/sec. For more information see the cruise report (RV Sonne cruise SO223; doi:10.1016/j.dsr2.2014.11.001).

IODP Expedition 391 Alkalinity and pH
Alkalinity was determined by Gran titration with an autotitrator (Metrohm 794 basic Titrino) using 0.1 M HCl at 20 degrees C. Report includes alkalinity, correction factor (if applicable), and pH.
IODP Expedition 391 Thin section images
Hard rock and sediment thin section images were acquired using either the JRSO-developed Petrographic Image Capture and Archival Tool (PICAT) imager or (rarely) an upright microscope and a digital camera. Sample images are acquired in unpolarized, polarized, and/or cross-polarized light. Image files are presented compressed by hole.
IODP Expedition 391 Section summary
Report includes data for individual core sections: coring/drilling depths and recovery, database identifiers for the whole section and section halves, and number of samples taken from the section before and after splitting.
IODP Expedition 391 Photomicrographs
Microscopic images of discrete samples were acquired using stereo and upright light microscopes and captured on digital cameras. Image files were uploaded along with a brief description and a record of the microscopic and lighting conditions when the image was taken.
IODP Expedition 391 Whole-round core section composite 360 degree images
Images of the outside of hard rock whole-round sections were acquired using a linescan imager (Section Half Imaging Logger [SHIL]) and a special holder that allows each 90 degree segment of the outer surface to be positioned properly. The images were taken at a resolution of 20 lines/mm (50 micropixels). JRSO staff take these quadrant images and compile them into a side-by-side rollout photograph of the section. Composite images are available as both JPG and TIF image formats. Individual quadrant images are available as JPG images only through this report; contact the IODP-JRSO Data Librarian if quadrant TIF files (~160 MB) are needed.
IODP Expedition 391 Carbonates composite report
This composite report includes data from two analyses (total carbon from Elemental analysis [CHNS], and inorganic carbon from [Coulometer]). Each row combines the CHNS and Coulometer data from measurements made on the same sample at the same time for a particular section and section offset (depth). If data do not exist for a particular expedition, the column does not appear. To identify individual samples and tests, see each separate data type (Elemental analysis and Coulometer). If the same sample was measured multiple times by any of the methods, results in the report will be combined on one line where possible. Each additional replicate result will be shown in subsequent rows and will be combined where possible. Report includes results for carbon forms: total, inorganic, calcium carbonate, and organic by difference, along with total hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur.
IODP Expedition 391 Inorganic carbon (coulometer)
Inorganic carbon (carbonate) is determined by coulometry, which uses a photodetection cell to measure carbon dioxide evolved during sample acidification. Report includes percent inorganic carbon and calcium carbonate.
IODP Expedition 391 Gas safety report
This composite report returns data from two different gas chromatograph configurations (GC3 and NGA). Each row combines data from several measurements made on the same sample at the same time for a particular headspace or vacutainer sample. If data do not exist for a particular expedition, the column does not appear. Gas samples were measured by gas chromatography and either flame ionization detection (GC-FID) or thermal conductivity detection (GC-TCD). Reported analytes may include methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, n-butane, i-butane, n-pentane, i-pentane, n-hexane, i-hexane, n-heptane, i-heptane, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. When data are available, methane to (ethane + ethene) ratio (C1/C2ratio) is reported. To identify individual samples and tests, see each separate analysis (GC3, NGAFID, and/or NGATCD).
IODP Expedition 391 Micropaleontology
Paleontological data were collected using microscopes and recorded in the JRSO description software. All data for a species group (e.g., diatoms or nannofossils) were collected in a Microsoft Excel worksheet by hole. A zip file of the entire expedition's observations is also available.
IODP Expedition 391 Visual core description
Descriptions of samples, generally at the section half and smear slide or thin section scale, were performed by shipboard scientists and recorded in the JRSO description software. Descriptive data for both macroscopic and microscopic examination were collected in a Microscoft Excel workbook by hole. A zip file of the entire expedition's observations is also available.
IODP Expedition 391 Closeup images
Close-up images taken by digital cameras as requested by the science party, typically when the section-half image is not sufficient. Close-up photographs of the areas of interest may be taken from whole-round sections, pieces, or section halves in sediments and rock.
