Time-lapse camera (phenocam) imagery of black sand extended growing season length experiment, 2022 - 2023.

As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and potentially earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how climate exposure may affect plant communities, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These sites include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows in a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot of each block by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control; black sand was added to these plots after snow had naturally melted. This dataset includes phenocam images from 2022-2023.

Although there is evidence supporting suboptimal decision-making in lupus and its association with glucocorticoids consumption, it is not clear what variables impact such decisions. The aim of this study is to explore how social, clinical, psychological, and demographic factors impact social and temporal decision-making in people with lupus. Through a within-subjects experimental-design, our participants responded to social, clinical, psychological, and demographic electronic questionnaires. Then, they participated in two behavioral economics experiments: the third-party dictator game, and the delay discounting task. Our results show that hostility, and age are essential predictors of social decisions, whereas obsessive-compulsiveness and anxiety better predict temporal decisions. These variables behave as expected, but anxiety shows unexpected results: most anxious people act patiently and prefer delayed but bigger rewards. Finally, clinical factors are critical decision predictors for social and temporal decisions. When people are in remission, they tend to impose higher punishment on those who violate the social norm, and they also tend to prefer immediate rewards. When taking glucocorticoids, they also prefer immediate rewards, and as the dosage of glucocorticoids intake increases, they tend to impose higher punishment on norm violators. Clinicians, researchers, and practitioners must consider the side effects of glucocorticoids on decision-making.</span></p>

Data from the Forest Resilience Threshold Experiment, University of Michigan Biological Station, 2024

During the 2024 field season, data collection efforts led by the FoRTE crew centered on understanding forest ecosystem dynamics and carbon cycling processes in a temperate forest landscape. Comprehensive datasets were gathered to evaluate structural and functional responses across multiple forest strata. Measurements included diameter at breast height (DBH) for canopy, subcanopy, and seedling layers, alongside a detailed subcanopy census to assess understory composition and diversity. Soil respiration (Rs) was monitored to quantify carbon fluxes, while fern density and distribution were documented to explore their role in forest microclimates and nutrient cycling. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) readings provided insights into light availability and its impact on primary production. Advanced remote sensing tools, including LiDAR and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), were employed to characterize canopy structure, vegetation health, and spatial heterogeneity. These diverse datasets collectively contribute to a robust framework for analyzing forest resilience, recovery, and carbon sequestration potential following disturbance, advancing our understanding of ecosystem processes in the face of environmental change.

C Concentrations and Characterization Data from DOM Incubation Assay Experiments

This dataset includes (1) original data from a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) incubation experiment and (2) a data synthesis of the DOC incubation experiment literature. Study component (1) was a factorial lab experiment crossing varying dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources (Suwannee River Fulvic Acid, Elliott soil leachate, Chlorella leachate) with varying microbial communities. The objective of this study component was to test the interacting effects of microbial community composition and DOM characteristics on carbon (C) biodegradation. We used a Micro-Oxymax Respirometer (Columbus Instruments, Columbus, Ohio) to measure carbon dioxide and oxygen accumulation at two hour intervals for a period of two weeks, and quantified the initial and final concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen of each experimental unit. To verify that the three DOM source solutions had differing chemical compositions and potential bioreactivity, we optically characterized each DOM source using mass spectra analysis and excitation-emission matrices (EEMs). Study component (2) is a synthesis of DOC concentrations from the C degradation experiment literature. The criteria for including a study in this synthesis was that (a) incubation DOM was sourced from a river, lake, marine, estuary, or marsh, and (b) that C concentrations were measured at least twice throughout the incubation in addition to an initial measurement. For each study, we extracted initial DOC values, elapsed incubation time, and reported DOC concentrations during the incubation period for each experimental treatment. This data package is completed.

The interactive effects of nitrate and road salt on benthic algal assemblages in an artificial stream experiment

To investigate and quantify the multi-tiered responses of benthic algal assemblages to the impacts of road salt and nitrate, we created artificial flow-through streams with terracotta vessels with nutrient diffusing substrates (NDS) containing varying concentrations of both salt (0-7500 mg/L) and nitrate (0-5.9 mg/L) and incubated for 56 days during the summer. This work was done at the University of Michigan Biological Station's stream research facility. The streams and algae were sampled on day 7, 14, 28, and 56. The algae pigments were quantified via a fluoroprobe and diatoms were quantified with counts on slides. Finally, both 13s and 16s DNA sequencing was performed on all of the samples.

Data associated with the FLooded Upland Dynamics EXperiment (FLUDEX), conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area 1997 to 2003, investigating reservoir flooding impacts on ecosystems, particularly the release of mercury and greenhouse gases.

The data included in this repository were collected over the course of the FLooded Upland Dynamics Experiment (FLUDEX) conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) from 1997 to 2003. A plethora of data was collected over five years of flooding three upland reservoir sites, in order to examine the relationship between the amount of flooded, and thus decomposed, terrestrial organic matter and the production of methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the reservoirs. Findings from this experiment suggest that the amount of organic carbon stored in a flooded site does not directly influence the amount of THg, MeHg, and GHGs produced, but it does affect the persistence of mercury in the reservoir and food web. This version of the repository contains data collected on water chemistry, benthic invertebrate (chironomid) emergence, mercury and methylmercury concentrations in the water and food web, stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in emerging insects and zooplankton, and abundance and biomass of zooplankton, phytoplankton, and bacteria. This data package contains only some of the data from the FLUDEX project. IISD-ELA hopes to add more data in subsequent versions.

Processed Net N2 Flux and Nitrous Oxide Production Rates from a mesocosm experiment, North River, MA, 2022

The data documented here show nitrogen cycling rates (net N2 flux and net N2O flux) from a tidal, freshwater wetland under two stressors in isolation and in combination over two different disturbance regimes. We used intact core mesocosms to examine how nitrogen cycling changed in response to increased temperature and salinity under pulse and press disturbances. We found that net N2 flux rates, defined as the balance between nitrogen fixation and denitrification did not directionally change in response to stressor pulse or press. Instead, it became more variable under both disturbance regimes. Nitrous oxide production rates, however, decreased and became more stable over time in the press scenario, but remained highly variable in the pulse scenario. These findings provide valuable knowledge on the functional potential of the nitrogen cycling microbial communities in tidal, freshwater wetlands when facing future climate variability.

Macrophyte and microbial mat biomass co-variation along a hydrologic gradient and response to a removal experiment in temporary wetlands Everglades, FL, USA, February 2003 – November 2006

This data package encompasses hydrologic variables, soil depth, hydrologically-regulated macrophyte community types, macrophyte biomass and community structure, and microbial mat biomass that was collected in two observational surveys and one in-situ experimental manipulation in six temporary wetland regions located in the Everglades, FL, USA. The goal of this project was to examine the co-variation in macrophyte and microbial mat biomass along the hydrologic gradient present across wetland regions and to determine the type and strength of interactions occurring between the two communities, which was tested using a biomass (macrophyte or microbial mat) removal experiment. The census observational survey took place at 140 sites from 2003-04-09 to 2004-05-26, which were randomly distributed across the hydrologic gradient present across the six temporary wetland regions. The transect observational survey occurred along six transects and each was deliberately established along the present hydrologic gradient within each region; a total of 254 sites were sampled from 2003-02-19 to 2005-03-04. The experiment took place at three temporary wetland sites with contrasting hydroperiods (3 – 6 months), and four transects were established per site with 24 pairs of control and treatment plots per transect. The removal treatment occurred one year before data collection, and data collection occurred from 2004-06-20 to 2006-11-25. The package includes six datasets, one R code file, and two shape files associated with the R code. Data collection for all datasets is complete. FCE1274_Census_Survey includes hydrologically-regulated macrophyte community type classifications, macrophyte biomass, microbial mat ash-free dry mass, mean soil depth, water depth, mean annual hydroperiod, and vegetation-inferred hydroperiod; each site was sampled once during the survey period and a subset of sites were sampled each year. Daily porewater salinity, conductivity, and temperature measurements from the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) Project

The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) is a large-scale field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. Six porewater well samples were collected four days per week from six treatment plots using a peristalsis pump. Salinity and conductivity were measured from the samples using a handheld conductivity/salinity meter. In addition, water delivery treatments were conducted four days per week after porewater samples were collected.

Litterfall in Simulated Hurricane Experiment at Harvard Forest since 1989

The hurricane site contains two plots - the blowdown (treatment) and the control - TSB and TSC respectively. The control plot contains 12 baskets and the blowdown 13. Litter baskets were placed in both the blowdown and control plots in Sept 1989. TSB-13 was originally part of an AVIRIS overflight study and was not included in the data collections until 1990. The litterfall year begins approximately September 20 each year. Years are designated with the fall date, e.g., Sept 1989-Sept 1990 is the 1989 litter year. Litter was collected 2x/year (Nov and the following Sep) in 1989 and 1990 and 3x/year in all subsequent years (Nov, June and Sep). Baskets were removed from the blowdown plot in fall 1990 while the experimental manipulation was underway. Only control plot baskets were collected for the 1990-1991 litterfall year. Nov. 2005 and June 2006 are combined as early snow in Nov. 2005 precluded collection. Litter was not sorted by species in all years and in most cases only the Nov collections were sorted from 1989 through 1993, 2000 and 2006. In other years, a total unsorted litter weight for each basket was recorded. Unsorted litter is indicated as unsorted species type.

Ant Assemblages in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest since 2003

Ants comprise a considerable amount of animal biomass in terrestrial ecosystems and play major roles in ecological processes ranging from seed dispersal to soil turnover. Invasion by the hemlock woolly adelgid will transform late-successional hemlock forests into earlier successional mixed hardwood - white pine forests or red-maple wetlands. Understanding how ant assemblages vary in different habitat types allows for predictions of how hemlock decline could alter the composition of ant assemblages, with implications for a wide range of ecosystem processes. As part of the Hemlock Removal Experiment at the Simes Tract, we annually monitor ant species composition and abundance.

Tree Seed Dispersal in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest 2005

Throughout the northeast, the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) threatens eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) through direct mortality resulting from infestation followed by defoliation and indirect mortality in the form of pre-emptive logging. The efficacy of regeneration of vegetation following hemlock decline depends upon advance regeneration of seedlings and saplings, seed dispersal, and recruitment. In this study, we investigated (1) whether the basic parameters of height of release and wind velocity affected seed dispersal distance and (2) tested the fit of a basic ballistic model of seed dispersal to empirical data in areas both with and without canopies. We collected empirical data from seed dropping and seed rain experiments at Harvard Forest. Height and wind velocity only affected seed dispersal distance in open areas. Predicted values of dispersal distance generated by the basic ballistic model did not provide a good fit to observed dispersal data. Poor fits of the ballistic model to the data were due to the model’s inability to account for rare, long distance dispersal events. More complex models with additional parameters are necessary to model non-localized seed dispersal.

Canopy LiDAR Measurements in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest 2005

As the ecological functioning of a forest stand is often related to the spatial organization of the canopy, we used a portable canopy LiDAR (PCL; Parker et al. 2004) to measure volumetric canopy structure in the simulated HWA management treatments. In September and October 2005, prior to leaf abscission, we set up 16 parallel transects spaced 2 meters apart in the 900 m2 (30 x 30 m) interior of each of the eight treatment plots. The orientation of the transects were either north-south or east-west to minimize the difficulty of traversing the stand. The distances to canopy surfaces more than1 m above the ground along the transects were recorded with the PCL. Assuming a constant horizontal sampling rate, the continual height measures were binned into 1 m intervals. From these measures, vertical canopy profiles, canopy openness, canopy rugosity, and other metrics related to the three-dimensional structure of the canopy can be derived. These canopy measures will be repeated minimally at 5 and 15 year intervals to develop an understanding of early structural dynamics and micrometeorological consequences associated with the simulated HWA treatments. Soil Respiration in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest 2003-2009

Soil respiration (SR) is a combination of autotrophic (root respiration) and heterotrophic (microbial respiration). As a combination of these two belowground processes, separating their relative contributions to SR from is difficult. The hemlock removal experiment provided an opportunity to look at these two components of SR. Girdling and logging result in the death and/or removal of aboveground biomass (trees) and subsequently death of root biomass. As a result the measured respiration in these treatment plots should then be comprised primarily of the microbial respiration component of SR. By measuring SR in control plots, and taking the difference with girdled and logged plots, we may determine the relative contribution of root and microbial respiration.

Short-Term Effects on Vegetation in Soil Warming Plus Nitrogen Addition Experiment at Harvard Forest 2006

The purpose of this experiment is to examine the interactive affects of warming and N additions on plant diversity. The experiment consists of four treatments (control, heated +N, heated -N, +N only) with six replicates per treatment in a completely randomized design. Average soil temperature in the heated plots will be elevated 5 deg C above ambient by the use of buried heating cables placed at 10 cm depth in the soil and spaced 20 cm apart. The heating cables will be controlled by a data logger that monitors thermistors (5 per plot) every 10 min. Plots will automatically turn on and off to maintain a 5 deg C temperature difference between the heated and control plots. The N addition plots (heated +N, +N only) will be fertilized following the protocol of the Chronic Nitrogen Addition Study. An aqueous solution of NH4NO3 will be applied at a rate equivalent to the low N plots at the chronic N study (5 g m-2 yr-1). Fertilizer will be applied in equal monthly doses during the growing season (Apr-Oct). The control plots and unfertilized, heated plots (heated -N) will receive water only.

Inorganic Nitrogen Pools and Tree Composition in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest 2007-2009

This study assessed how the change in leaf litter input and environmental conditions, from that of hemlock stands to earlier successional deciduous stands, will affect inorganic nitrogen availability at the interface of the mineral soil and LFH horizons. In early October 2007 we exchanged 0.5 x 0.5 m "loaves" of LFH horizons from hemlock and deciduous stands between forest types, while keeping control plots in the original forest stands. Inorganic nitrogen outputs from the litter loaves were monitored for 20 months using ion-exchange resins, removing and replacing the resins three times at 5 - 8 month intervals. Results indicated that there were differences between the control hemlock and deciduous loaves - NO3 and NH4 availability were higher in deciduous stands. However, the transfer of litter loaves from one stand type to another did not reveal changes in nutrient availability due to a shift in habitat. Rather, the methodology of moving litter loaves to a new site caused greater changes in nutrient availability, particularly over the summer months.
