Richness is shown for different elevations. The number of lakes within this elevation range is indicated. While mean richness ranges around 750 OTUs it drops to around 400 OTUs at high elevations. The transition seems to be around or slightly below 1400m.
Catchment properties and the photosynthetic trait composition of freshwater plant communities
Unlike in land plants, photosynthesis in many aquatic plants relies on bicarbonate in addition to carbon dioxide (CO2) to compensate for the low diffusivity and potential depletion of CO2 in water. Concentrations of bicarbonate and CO2 vary greatly with catchment geology. In this study, we investigate whether there is a link between these concentrations and the frequency of freshwater plants possessing the bicarbonate use trait. We show, globally, that the frequency of plant species with this trait increases with bicarbonate concentration. Regionally, however, the frequency of bicarbonate use is reduced at sites where the CO2 concentration is substantially above the air equilibrium, consistent with this trait being an adaptation to carbon limitation. Future anthropogenic changes of bicarbonate and CO2 concentrations may alter the species compositions of freshwater plant communities.
Dataset for: Effects of chloride and nutrients on freshwater plankton communities
<p>Increasing chloride concentrations threaten freshwater zooplankton. We questioned the protectiveness of the Canadian Water Quality Guideline for chloride because it is based on individual species studied under laboratory conditions and does not account for potential interactive factors, such as nutrient concentration. We exposed plankton communities to thirty chloride concentration increments for six weeks, crossed with either ambient or high nutrient treatments. Total zooplankton abundance, biomass, and richness declined with increasing chloride, with losses observed below the Canadian Water Quality Guideline. Nutrients did not affect the impact of chloride on zooplankton. Phytoplankton and protist responses varied by nutrient level. Under low nutrients, phytoplankton and protist abundance, biomass, and richness increased with chloride. Under high nutrients, phytoplankton and protist abundance and biomass were unaffected while richness decreased with chloride. These results indicate that current water quality guidelines do not sufficiently protect plankton and that nutrient context may alter phytoplankton and protist response.</p>
Data: Diversity-production relationships of fish communities in freshwater stream ecosystems
<p>Ecological relationships between species richness and biomass production are increasingly thought to be pervasive across the globe. Yet diversity-production relationships have not been explored extensively for freshwater fish communities even though fisheries production provides key services to humans. Our aim was to evaluate the diversity-production relationship for fish communities inhabiting freshwater streams across the Appalachian Mountain range and examine how diversity-production relationships varied across streams possessing different thermal signatures. Our study area included 25 freshwater stream ecosystems spanning from Vermont to North Carolina in the United States. Twenty sites were located in Maryland south to Tennessee and North Carolina while five additional higher latitude sites were sampled in Massachusetts and Maine. We sampled 25 study streams from June to September 2012 and collected fish population information to calculate biomass, species richness, Shannon diversity index, and annual production for each fish community. Linear mixed models were used to analyze the relationship between diversity indices and total community production. We also compared diversity and production relationships across other taxa. Across all streams, community fish production, biomass and P/B ratios ranged 0.15-6.79 g m<sup>2 </sup>y<sup>1</sup>, 0.61-0.73 g m-2, and 0.21-1.07 y<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Species richness had a significant positive effect (p = 0.012) on community fish production, while accounting for the thermal signature of the streams as a random effect and other habitat covariates. Shannon diversity index did not have a significant effect (p = 0.101) on community production. The diversity-production relationship observed for stream fish communities was similar to other studies but demonstrated one of the highest slopes. Our results demonstrate that effects of biodiversity resonate to influence the production of fishes; thus, management of fisheries is more closely coupled to biodiversity than previously thought.</p>
Data on physico-chemical quality and microbial community level physiological profiles of drinking water and freshwater resources in Mega Manila Philippines
<p><strong>Samples of drinking water and freshwater resources in Mega Manila, Philippines were analyzed for physical and chemical quality as well as physiological profiles of microbial communities. Temperature, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, absolute conductivity, resistivity, total dissolved solids, salinity, pressure, and dissolved oxygen were measured using a multi-parameter probe and reported as averages from three biological replicates per sample. Detection and quantification of arsenic were carried out via 3114 B: Hydride Generation AAS method, while analysis for lead and cadmium was carried out via 3111 B: Direct Air-Acetylene Flame method. Detection and quantification of mercury was performed via Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Detection and quantification of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were carried out via Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detection (GC-ECD). Assessment of the physiological activities of microbial communities in the water samples was done using the Biolog EcoPlateTM system. Eight samples returned less than the minimum detection limit for analysis of heavy metals and no samples contained polyaromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides. In terms of microbial community physiological profiles, 66% of the samples (19 out 29) are found to demonstrate consistent increases in AMR and CMD over time. These data can be reused as comparators for retrospective and prospective quality assessments of drinking water and freshwater sources.</strong></p>
