Prototyping 3D Virtual Learning Environments with X3D-based Content and Visualization Tools-Figure 11. Online accessible repository of digital data on cultural heritage with X3D models (STARC Web Repository, 2017, © Copyright 2017, STARC, Cyprus Institute. Used with permission)

Prototyping can also include the development of toolkits for automatic content generation simulator, but in the case of an architectural environment, the components are too complex to be automatically generated. Furniture elements or the learning artifacts (i.e. content created by learners) can be converted to be viewed in X3D compatible browsers or included in online galleries (Figure 11). After functional and 3D content prototyping, certain components of the virtual campus can be easily modified and adapted as needed.

A biodiversity dataset graph: Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL)

A biodiversity dataset graph: Biodiversity Heritage Library

Biodiversity datasets, or descriptions of biodiversity datasets, are increasingly available through open digital data infrastructures such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL, https://biodiversitylibrary.org). "The Biodiversity Heritage Library improves research methodology by collaboratively making biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community." - https://biodiversitylibrary.org , June 2019.

However, little is known about how these networks, and the data accessed through them, change over time. This dataset provide snapshots of all OCR item texts (e.g., individual items) available through BHL as tracked by Preston (https://github.com/bio-guoda/preston , https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1410543 ) over period May - June 2019.

This snapshot contains about 120GB of uncompressed OCR texts across 227k OCR BHL items. Also, a snapshot of the BHL item catalog at https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/data/item.txt is included.

The archive consists of 256 individual parts (e.g., preston-00.tar.gz, preston-01.tar.gz, ...) to allow for parallel file downloads. The archive contains three types of files: index files, provenance files and data files. Only two index and provenance files are included and have been individually included in this dataset publication. Index files provide a way to links provenance files in time to eestablish a versioning mechanism. Provenance files describe how, when and where the BHL OCR text items were retrieved. For more information, please visit https://preston.guoda.bio or https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1410543).

To retrieve and verify the downloaded BHL biodiversity dataset graph, first concatenate all the downloaded preston-*.tar.gz files (e.g., cat preston-*.tar.gz > preston.tar.gz). Then, extract the archives into a "data" folder. After that, verify the index of the archive by reproducing the following result:

$ java -jar preston.jar history
<0659a54f-b713-4f86-a917-5be166a14110> <http://purl.org/pav/hasVersion> <hash://sha256/89926f33157c0ef057b6de73f6c8be0060353887b47db251bfd28222f2fd801a> .
<hash://sha256/41b19aa9456fc709de1d09d7a59c87253bc1f86b68289024b7320cef78b3e3a4> <http://purl.org/pav/previousVersion> <hash://sha256/89926f33157c0ef057b6de73f6c8be0060353887b47db251bfd28222f2fd801a> .

To check the integrity of the extracted archive, confirm that each line produce by the command "preston verify" produces lines as shown below, with each line including "CONTENT_PRESENT_VALID_HASH". Wikidata's linked data for cultural heritage digital resources: an evaluation based on the Europeana Data Model

Wikidata is an open data source with many potential applications. Our study aims to evaluate the usability of Wikidata as a linked data source for acquiring richer descriptions of digital objects within the context of Europeana, a data aggregator from the cultural heritage domain. Specifically, we aim to crawl and convert Wikidata using the standard approaches and operations developed for the (Semantic) Web of Data, i.e. using technologies like linked data consumption and RDF(S)/OWL ontology expression and reasoning. We also seek to re-use existing “semantic” specifications, such as conversions to and from generic data models like Schema.org and SKOS. We have developed an experimental set-up and accompanying software to test the feasibility of this approach. We conclude that Wikidata’s linked data is able to express an interesting level of semantics for cultural heritage, but quality can still be improved and a human operator still must assist linked data applications to interpret Wikidata’s RDF.

Analysis of heritage stones and model wall paintings by pulsed laser excitation of Raman, laser-induced fluorescence and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy signals with a hybrid system

Analysis of heritage stone samples, alabaster, gypsum, limestone and marble, and model wall paintings was carried out with a laboratory, hybrid system based on the pulsed laser excitation of Raman, laser-induced fluorescence and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy signals. The system is based on a nanosecond Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at its second (532 nm), third (355 nm) and fourth (266 nm) harmonics and a spectrograph coupled to a time-gated intensified charge coupled device for spectral analysis allowing detection with temporal resolution. For the stone samples, Raman spectra display the characteristic vibration modes of SO42- of calcium sulfate, in alabaster and gypsum, and of free CO32- of calcium carbonate, in limestone and marble. Simultaneously acquired laser-induced fluorescence spectra reveal characteristic bands that help to distinguish between heritage stone types. The elemental composition of stone samples is obtained by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy upon excitation at 355 nm. Spectra of all stone samples reveal their elemental composition that includes Ca, Na, Mn and Sr and the presence of molecular species, such as CN, C2 and CaO. Additional emission lines, ascribed to Mg, Si, Al and K, appear with different intensities according to the nature of the stone material. Model wall paintings, based on a red pigment, prepared as fresco or mixed with two different binders, were also studied. The complementary information provided by the three spectroscopic modes allows the identification of the pigment as red vermillion and of the different preparations based on the pigment alone or in mixtures with linseed oil and egg yolk binders.

Influence of wavelength on the laser removal of lichens colonizing heritage stone-Associated dataset

Stone samples from Alpedrete quarry front, Madrid (Spain), which were used to construct heritage buildings and monuments in the Central area of Spain, and from Valonsadero Church (Spain), presenting different types of biological crusts were investigated in order to find the conditions for efficient laser treatment. Samples presenting superficial areas colonized by 6 different lichens: Protoparmeliopsis volcana and muralis (foliose), Aspicilia vidrescensa and contorta, Candelariella vitelina and Rhizocarpon disporum (crustose) were selected for laser treatment.

In order to determine the best laser irradiation conditions UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy was performed from ethanol diluted bioderioration crust of each sample and ablation threshold was found for each stone substrate. A comparative study was carried out on the mentioned samples with infrared, ultraviolet and sequences of both nanosecond laser pulses using the fundamental (1064 nm), 3rd (355 nm) and 4th (266 nm) harmonic output of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system (pulse duration 17 ns, repetition rate 1-10 Hz) at fluences just below umbral threshold.
