Edge effects, not connectivity, determine the incidence and development of a foliar fungal plant disease
Using a model plant-pathogen system in a large-scale habitat corridor experiment, we found that corridors do not facilitate the movement of wind-dispersed plant pathogens, that connectivity of patches does not enhance levels of foliar fungal plant disease, and that edge effects are the key drivers of plant disease dynamics. Increased spread of infectious disease is often cited as a potential negative effect of habitat corridors used in conservation, but the impacts of corridors on pathogen movement have never been tested empirically. Using sweet corn (Zea mays) and southern corn leaf blight (Cochliobolus heterostrophus) as a model plant-pathogen system, we tested the impacts of connectivity and habitat fragmentation on pathogen movement and disease development at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA. Over time, less edgy patches had higher proportions of diseased plants, and distance of host plants to habitat edges was the greatest determinant of disease development. Variation in average daytime temperatures provided a possible mechanism for these disease patterns. Our results show that worries over the potentially harmful effects of conservation corridors on disease dynamics are misplaced, and that, in a conservation context, many diseases can be better managed by mitigating edge effects.

Changes in incident light intensity to streams with progressive hemlock mortality at 5 Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory study sites from 2005 to 2015
The purpose of this study was to document changes in light intensity to streams in areas affected by hemlock mortaity. From June 2005 to November 2015, relative light intensity at 5 locations along each stream reach was monitored every 5 minutes. This study was conducted at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. Five stream sites were located on 1st - 2nd order streams reaches affected by hemlock death. All sites were located in areas that have not been logged since the area became National Forest in the late 1920s and where streams passed through or were adjacent to permanent vegetation plots in which trees were measured in 1934-35, 1969-73 and 1988-93 (Elliott and Swank, 2008.)

Hornbill abundance and breeding incidence in relation to habitat modification and fig fruit availability
<p>Asian hornbills are known to forage and breed in fragmented rainforests and agroforestry plantations in human‐modified landscapes adjoining contiguous protected forests. However, the factors influencing year‐round hornbill abundance, demography and tracking of key food resources such as wild fig <em>Ficus</em> fruits in modified habitats and protected forests remain poorly understood. We carried out monthly surveys of two species of high conservation concern, the Vulnerable Great Hornbill (GH, <em>Buceros bicornis</em>) and the endemic Malabar Grey Hornbill (MGH, <em>Ocyceros griseus</em>) for 15 months and monitored ripe fig fruit availability for 12 months along 11 line transects (total length 24 km) in shade‐coffee plantations and adjoining continuous rainforests in a protected area (PA) in the Anamalai Hills, Western Ghats, India. Both hornbill species used plantations and the PA year‐round but distance sampling density estimates were higher in the PA in both nesting (GH by 57%; MGH by 50%) and non‐nesting (GH by 53%; MGH by 144%) seasons. Relative to estimates from 2004 to 2005, mean GH density appeared stable or increasing, whereas MGH had declined by 39% in the PA and by 56% in plantations. Monthly encounter rate of both hornbills tended to be higher in the PA and that of MGH was also positively related to the density of fig trees with ripe fruit. Sex ratios of observed adult birds in the non‐nesting season were relatively even (GH) or slightly female‐biased (MGH), but became male‐biased in both species during the nesting season when females were confined in tree‐cavity nests. We used change in the adult sex ratio of observed birds from the non‐nesting to nesting season to estimate an index of the proportion of adult pairs breeding at any point within the season, providing the first such estimates for any hornbill species. The proportion of breeding pairs was higher in the PA (GH – 56%, MGH – 64%) than in the plantations (GH – 33%, MGH – 30%). Although hornbills use shade‐coffee plantations year‐round, partly due to fig fruit availability, differences in hornbill density and breeding incidence, as assessed from the sex ratios of observed adult birds, indicate that plantations are a sub‐optimal habitat for both species.</p>
Microblogging violent attacks on medical staff: A case study of the Longmen County People’s Hospital incident, an indication of a health care crisis in China
<p>A violent attack on medical staff in Guangdong Province, in which a female doctor at Longmen County People’s Hospital (LCPH) was severely injured by a knife-wielding patient, has drawn significant public attention to the phenomenon of hospital violence and initiated discussions on how to resolve violence in hospitals. Social networking sites, such as Sina Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, have played a role in this public debate. The incident at LCPH provides an opportunity to examine how Weibo has been used in the debate about violence against medical staff in China. Using the Sina Weibo’s built-in search tool, we established a dataset of 661 Chinese-language micro-blogs containing the search terms: Longmen (“龙门”), doctor (“医生”), and slash (“砍”) that were posted between July 15, 2015, the date of the violent incident at LCPH, and August 15, 2015. We performed a content analysis of the micro-blogs to examine: users’ demographics, attitudes toward the injured doctor and the attacker, possible reasons for the hospital violence, and proposed measures for preventing doctors from violent incidents. </p>

<p>The <em><strong>Australian Shark-Incident Database</strong></em> (ASID), formerly known as the <em><strong><a href="https://taronga.org.au/conservation-and-science/australian-shark-attack-file">Australian Shark Attack File</a></strong></em> (ASAF), quantifies temporal and spatial patterns of shark-human interactions in Australia.</p> <p>The <em><strong>Australian Shark-Incident Database</strong></em> is a joint partnership with <a href="https://taronga.org.au/conservation-and-science/our-contribution">Taronga Conservation Society Australia</a>, along with <a href="http://www.flinders.edu.au/">Flinders University</a>, and the <a href="https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/">New South Wales Department of Primary Industries</a><br> <br> Maintained as an uninterrupted record by a few committed Taronga team members since 1984, the File currently comprises > 1000 individual investigations from 1791 to today, making it the most comprehensive database of its kind available.</p>

Climate change incidence, risk perception, and food security nexus
<p>This dataset supports the manuscript "Climate change incidence, risk perception, and food security among smallholders in Tigray, Ethiopia". The dataset contains three folders and a file from three data sources: (1) the Ethiopia Rural Socioeconomic Survey (ERSS)/Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA), a three-round panel data for Ethiopia, filtered for Tigray region; (2) an ERSS follow-up survey on the beliefs and opinions of respondents on climate change conducted in August 2019 in Tigray; and (3) 4km x 4km monthly grided Climate data (Rainfall, Max & min temperature). The files include socioeconomic data and household features, beliefs and opinions on climate change, and climatological data (monthly rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures). The dataset covers 34 Enumeration Areas (EA) of the ERSS/LSMS-ISA and represents the region. It can be useful for studies on climate change risk perception and adaptation, environmental protection, and drivers of food insecurity in Tigray, Ethiopia. The data were processed using user-written codes in STATA v.17.</p>
Socioeconomic status affects the incidence of COVID-19 in Chilean multiple sclerosis patients
<p><span><b><span>Objective: </span></b>To investigate the frequency of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMSs) living in a high socioeconomic vulnerability area in Chile.<b> </b></span></p> <p><span><b><span>Methods:</span></b> In this prospective cohort study, we compared the frequency of COVID-19 in 52 Chilean pwMSs on disease-modifying treatments (DMTs), living in urban municipalities with low-income/high-poverty levels, with that previously reported in pwMSs living in municipalities with high-income/low-poverty rates in Santiago, Chile. Demographic and clinical features of the pwMSs were obtained from their last consultation between March 3, 2020, and August 29, 2020.<b> </b></span></p> <p><span><b><span>Results:</span></b> In the low-income pwMSs, the mean patient age was 34 years, 69% were women, mean disease duration was 3 years, and mean Expanded Disability Status Scale score was 1.6. Of these, 61.5% pwMSs (32/52) underwent quarantine during the study period. <span>COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction in five patients (10%): two were on glatiramer acetate, one was on fingolimod, and two were on alemtuzumab. All pwMSs with COVID-19 recovered fully. </span>The previously reported frequency of confirmed COVID-19 in middle‒upper income pwMSs living in Santiago was 1%. The frequency of COVID-19 among pwMSs in the low- and middle‒high income inhabitants of Santiago differed significantly (z = -4.3235, p < 0.00001; one-tailed Fisher exact test, p < 0.01).</span></p> <p><span><b>Conclusion: </b>The frequency of COVID-19 in the low-income/high-poverty cohort in Santiago, Chile, was markedly high. Accordingly, high socioeconomic vulnerability should be considered as an important risk factor for COVID-19 in pwMSs.</span></p>
Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection in a pediatric cohort in Kuwait
<p><strong><span>Objective: </span></strong><span>Subsequent protection from severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) infection in pediatrics is not well reported in the literature. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 PCR repositivity in children. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Design:</span></strong><span> This is a population-level retrospective cohort study</span></p> <p><strong><span>Setting: </span></strong><span>Patients were identified through multiple national-level electronic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) databases covering all Kuwait's primary, secondary and tertiary centers. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Participants: The </span></strong><span>study included children 12 years and younger over an 11-month period between 2020 and 2021. SARS-CoV-2 reinfection was defined as having two or more positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR done on a respiratory sample, at least 45 days apart. Clinical data were obtained from the Pediatric COVID-19 Registry in Kuwait (PCR-Q8). </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Primary and secondary outcome measures:</span></strong><span> The primary measure is to estimate the SARS-CoV-2 PCR repositivity rate. The secondary objective was to establish average duration between first and subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection.</span><span> </span><span>Descriptive statistics was used to present clinical data for each infection episode. Also, incidence-sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate 60- and 90-day PCR repositivity intervals.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><span> Thirty pediatric COVID-19 patients had SARS-CoV-2 reinfection at an incidence of 1.02 (95% CI 0.71-1.45) infection per 100,000 person-days and a median time to reinfection of 83 days (IQR 62-128.75). <span>The incidence of reinfection decreased to 0.78 (95% CI 0.52-1.17) and 0.47 (95% CI 0.28-0.79) per person-days when the minimum interval between PCR repositivity was increased to 60 and 90 days, respectively. </span>The mean age of reinfected subjects was 8.5 years (IQR 3.7-10.3) and the majority (70%) were females. Most children (55.2%) had asymptomatic reinfection. Fever was the most common presentation in symptomatic patients. One immunocompromised experienced two reinfection episodes.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion: </span></strong><span>SARS-CoV-2 reinfection is uncommon in children. Previous confirmed COVID-19 in children seems to result in milder reinfection.</span></p>
Data from: Spatiotemporal incidence of Zika and associated environmental drivers for the 2015-2016 epidemic in Colombia
Despite a long history of mosquito-borne virus epidemics in the Americas, the impact of the Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic of 2015-2016 was unexpected. The need for scientifically informed decision-making is driving research to understand the emergence and spread of ZIKV. To support that research, we assembled a data set of key covariates for modeling ZIKV transmission dynamics in Colombia, where ZIKV transmission was widespread and the government made incidence data publically available. On a weekly basis between January 1, 2014 and October 1, 2016 at three administrative levels, we collated spatiotemporal Zika incidence data, nine environmental variables, and demographic data into a single downloadable database. These new datasets and those we identified, processed, and assembled at comparable spatial and temporal resolutions will save future researchers considerable time and effort in performing these data processing steps, enabling them to focus instead on extracting epidemiological insights from this important data set. Similar approaches could prove useful for filling data gaps to enable epidemiological analyses of future disease emergence events.
