DEEP Lakes Grant Program water quality assessment, CT, 1937-2006

“The water quality of lakes in Connecticut has historically been assessed by the CTDEP using best professional judgment as a follow-up to citizen complaints. The CTDEP possesses a number of lake technical studies (dredging feasibility studies, drainage studies, and diagnostic/feasibility studies) that were completed by local municipalities and lake associations using funding provided through the Connecticut Lakes Grant Program. Many of these reports contain data regarding lake water quality and limnological and watershed characteristics."

New York Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP), 1985-2011

CSLAP is New York’s Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program. CSLAP is a volunteer lake monitoring and education program that is managed by the NY Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and New York State Federation of Lake Associations (NYSFOLA). The program has delivered high quality data to many DEC programs for over 25 years. It includes data from 259 lakes (21 of which have 2 or more sampling points/lake). Virtually all lakes have multiple years of data, and many have 20+ years, although most have years that lack data. Samples are collected by trained citizen monitors, and sent to a State or state-approved lab. Analyses prior to 2002 were done by the NY Dept of Health, and subsequently at a State-Certified Lab. The program is extremely well documented, and an overview of the background and details of the program are described in Kishbaugh (1988).

EPA National Lake Assessment Survey Lower 48 States Lake Chemistry

EPA and its state and tribal partners conducted a survey of the nation's lakes, ponds and reservoirs (>10 acres, using NHD) in 2007. This National Lakes Assessment was designed to provide statistically valid regional and national estimates of the condition of lakes. It used a probability-based sampling design (5 size classes of lakes, 9 agglomerated Omernik ecoregions, and spatially distributed across the lower 48 US states) to represent the condition of all lakes in similar regions sharing similar ecological characteristics. Consistent sampling and analytical procedures ensured that the results could be compared across the country. The NLA helped build state and tribal capacity for monitoring and assessment and promoted collaboration across jurisdictional boundaries in the assessment of water quality. 1000 total lakes were included in the NLA (909 lakes visited once and 91 that were revisited), however, the dbase also includes additional lakes for any states that performed an ‘intensification’ in order to do a state-wide lake assessment. Finally, there are lakes that are designated as ‘reference’ lakes that were not chosen in the same probabilistic fashion, but were chosen state-by-state using a variety of methods. Maine Department of Environment Protection lake monitoring and assessment, 1970s-2011, compiled all ME DEP programs for metadata unpublished data

Much of the lake monitoring in the state is done to assess "trophic state" or the productivity of the water. Our 30 year record includes data on over 1000 of our 5785 lakes, including parameters such as transparency, conductivity, alkalinity, total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a. These, along with extensive data sets from the University of Maine and clarity readings from volunteers, have produced one of the most comprehensive lake data sets in the country. DEP regular monitoring includes annual Baseline Sampling Program and special projects of one or more years’ duration. Each year between August 10 and September 10, we visit over 100 lakes and take a number of types of data. The timing coincides with the period when lakes usually show their worst water quality: lowest dissolved oxygen, lowest transparency and highest algae and phosphorus levels. Besides these measures, we sample for conductivity, alkalinity and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), true and apparent color, and a variety of cations and anions. Lakes sampled generally include TMDL lakes, 33-50 lakes in the VLMP, lakes of special concern (e.g., anecdotal report of algal bloom), long-term monitoring lakes in ecoreserves and special project lakes.

NH Department of Environmental Studies (NHDES): Watershed Management Bureau Volunteer Lakes Assessment Program Lake Sunapee, 1986-2012

Data on Lake Sunapee were compiled by Kathleen Weathers’ Lab, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Data were collected by Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA) and analyzed by NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES). LSPA has been concerned with water quality since its founding in 1898, when the issues were sawdust and trash in the lake and the level of the lake water. In the 1950’s LSPA collected water samples and tested for E.coli in order to have Lake Sunapee meet the standards to be named a class A (drinking water quality) lake in New Hampshire. Starting in the 1980’s, LSPA volunteer water quality monitors have been regularly sampling Lake Sunapee’s water in cove and deep sites in Lake Sunapee, and more recently in its tributary streams. The samples are analyzed in LSPA’s Water Quality Laboratory at Colby-Sawyer College; NH Department of Environmental Services provides an annual water quality report based on its analysis of the data as part of the VLAP (Volunteer Lake Assessment) Program. The LSPA lab at Colby-Sawyer College, run by Bonnie Lewis under strict quality standards as a sister lab to the state lab at NH Department of Environmental Services, also processes water samples for about twenty five area lakes.

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan's Lake Water Quality Assessment Program (MI-LWQA), 2001-2010

The sampling methodology and program was designed to replicate the methods used historically by MI-DEQ to sample inland lakes in the 1970-1980’s. Each year, lakes were selected randomly from 7-10 major watersheds in MI. Watersheds were monitored in a 5-yr cycle in conjunctions with current MI-DEQ water quality activities. Lakes > 25 acres were chosen that had public boat access.

NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Watershed Management Bureau Biology Section: Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP) Environmental Monitoring data, 1995-2014

The New Hampshire Volunteer Lake Assessment Program was initiated in 1985 in response to an expressed desire of lake associations to be involved in lake protection and watershed management. VLAP is a cooperative program between volunteer monitors and the DES which leads to local awareness of land use and human practices that may be detrimental to lake quality and also empowers communities in their decision-making regarding lake management issues. The three major partners are the NHDES Biology Section, numerous volunteer monitors located throughout the state, and the VLAP satellite laboratories. Sara Steiner, NHDES VLAP Coordinator (who reports directly to Jody Connor, the Limnology Center Director and VLAP Program Manager), has the overall responsibility for training the volunteer monitors throughout the state in sample collection and watershed monitoring, conducting annual site visits and training interns to conduct annual site visits. NHDES and the volunteer monitors will collect samples from their lake/pond and its watershed, and will then bring samples to the NHDES Limnology Center, the Lake Sunapee Region Laboratory at Colby Sawyer College in New London, or the Environmental Research Laboratory at Plymouth State University in Plymouth. The purpose of VLAP is to assess the chemical and biological characteristics of the lakes and ponds throughout the state to determine overall health of the system. Environmental results are measured by making comparisons to established means and ranges of water quality for the state of New Hampshire. Chemical, biological, and physical parameters are measured and compared to lakes throughout the state. This data is provided to NHDES and the volunteer monitors. The data is used by the NHDES for assessment, education, and reporting purposes. The data are used by the volunteer monitors for educational purposes and for guiding local lake management activities. Data from: Assessing impact of exogenous features on biotic phenomena in the presence of strong spatial dependence: a lake sturgeon case study in natural stream settings

Modeling spatially explicit data provides a powerful approach to identify the effects of exogenous features associated with biological processes, including recruitment of stream fishes. However, the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of the stream and the species' reproductive and early life stage behaviors present challenges to drawing valid inference using traditional regression models. In these settings it is often difficult to ensure the spatial independence among model residuals---a key assumption that must be met to ensure valid inference. We present statistical models capable of capturing complex residual anisotropic patterns through the addition of spatial random effects within an inferential framework that acknowledges uncertainty in the data and parameters. Proposed models are used to explore the impact of environmental variables on Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) reproduction, particularly questions about patterns in egg deposition. Our results demonstrate the need to apply valid statistical methods to identify relationships between response variables, e.g., egg counts, across locations, and environmental covariates in the presence of strong and anisotropic autocorrelation in stream systems. The models may be applied to other settings where gamete distribution or, more generally, other biotic phenomena may be associated with spatially dynamic and anisotropic processes.

Data from: Assessing reproductive isolation using a contact zone between parapatric lake-stream stickleback ecotypes

Ecological speciation occurs when populations evolve reproductive isolation as a result of divergent natural selection. This isolation can be influenced by many potential reproductive barriers, including selection against hybrids, selection against migrants, and assortative mating. How and when these barriers act and interact in nature is understood for relatively few empirical systems. We used a mark-recapture experiment in a contact zone between lake and stream three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus, Linnaeus) to evaluate the occurrence of hybrids (allowing inferences about reproductive isolation), the inter-annual survival of hybrids (allowing inferences about selection against hybrids), and the shift in lake-like versus stream-like characteristics (allowing inferences about selection against migrants). Genetic and morphological data suggest the occurrence of hybrids and no selection against hybrids in general, a result contradictory to a number of other studies of sticklebacks. However, we did find selection against more lake-like individuals, suggesting a barrier to gene flow from the lake into the stream. Combined with previous work on this system, our results suggest that multiple (most weakly and often asymmetric) barriers must be combining to yield substantial restrictions on gene flow. This work provides evidence of a reproductive barrier in lake-stream sticklebacks and highlights the value of assessing multiple reproductive barriers in natural contexts.

Data from: A population genetic assessment of taxonomic species: the case of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes

Organisms sampled for population level research are typically assigned to species by morphological criteria. But if those criteria are limited to one sex or life stage, or the organisms come from a complex of closely related forms, the species assignments may misdirect analyses. The impact of such sampling can be assessed from the correspondence of genetic clusters, identified only from patterns of genetic variation, to the species identified using only phenotypic criteria. We undertook this protocol with the rock-dwelling mbuna cichlids of Lake Malawi, for which species within genera are usually identified by investigators using adult male coloration patterns. Given high local endemism of male color patterns, and considerable allele sharing among species, there persists considerable taxonomic uncertainty in these fishes. Over 700 individuals from a single transect were photographed, genotyped, and separately assigned: (1) to morphospecies using photographs; and (2) to genetic clusters using five widely used methods. Overall, the correspondence between clustering methods was strong for larger clusters, but methods varied widely in estimated number of clusters. The correspondence between morphospecies and genetic clusters was also strong for larger clusters, as well as some smaller clusters for some methods. These analyses generally affirm (1) adult male-limited sampling and (2) the taxonomic status of Lake Malawi mbuna, as the species in our study largely appear to be well-demarcated genetic entities. More generally, our analyses highlight the challenges for clustering methods when the number of populations is unknown, especially in cases of highly uneven sample sizes.
