A scrubbed subset of near-surface, soil, and air temperature data acquired across multiple locations on the San Joaquin Experimental Range, California, 2012-2017
These temperature records were collected as part of a larger study relating microclimates to tree seedling survival in southern California mountains. These temperature records are for studies at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (Lat 37.083, Long -119.716, elevation 210-520 m, www.fs.fed.us/psw/ef/san_joaquin/). Temperature sensors were located at 23 sites across the landscape. Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges, and valleys. To characterize surface temperature variation within a site, 21 sensors were arranged in an identical pattern around and in six, 5x5 m experimental gardens. An additional 18 sensors were placed along three transects over the landscape running E-W. They were placed strategically to sample topographic inflection points (hill tops and valley bottoms) as well as north and south facing slopes. Temperatures were recorded on a 10 or 20-minute interval, depending on the sensor, using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) devices.

These temperature records were collected as part of a larger study relating microclimates to tree seedling survival in southern California mountains. These temperature records are for studies at the Teakettle Experimental Forest (Lat 36.967, Long -119.017, elevation 2000-2800 m, www.fs.fed.us/psw/ef/teakettle/). Temperature sensors were located at 44 sites across the landscape. Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges and valleys. To characterize surface temperature variation within select sites, 21 sensors were arranged in an identical pattern around and in six, 5x5 m experimental gardens (see garden schematic for details). An additional 33 sites were located across the site by way of a stratified sampling scheme which targeted low, medium, and high elevation areas, low, medium, and high radiation areas, and cold air pooling areas. In June 2012, in order to concentrate sensors in a smaller study area (ease of access and to make this more similar to other sites, 22 sites were "retired," and 7 new sites were installed, for a total of 18 during the remainder of the study. Temperatures were recorded on a 10 or 20-minute interval, depending on the sensor. using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) devices.

Long-term monitoring of peatlands located near oil sands mining activities surrounding Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (2009-Present)
Oil sands mining activities in the Fort McMurray region of Alberta, Canada, have led to increased atmospherically deposited nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S), with N steadily increasing over time and S peaking in 2009, then decreasing with the installation of scrubbers on upgrader stacks. Ecosystems (such as ombrotrophic bogs) near these mining activities see an increase to their depositional load. These peatlands are isolated from groundwater and receive inputs only from precipitation, making them uniquely susceptible to changing depositional scenarios. To evaluate the effect of oil sands development on bogs in this area, since 2009, we have collected and analyzed porewater (pH, conductivity, NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S, and total dissolved N), N and S as represented in extractions of ion exchange resin precipitation collectors (NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S), samples of new growth from the most dominant plant species (C, N, and S, with Ca, Mg, K, and P analyzed in later years), and have recorded annual growth of vegetation. For a majority of the years, we have sampled at least 3 times (June, July, and August). Some sites have burned and have been replaced by others, however, collections are on-going and data from these collections are uploaded as they are published.
Palmyra Atoll dissolved organic carbon sampling locations and values
This package provides data for Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sampling locations and values. DOC was sampled at 12 sites to compare DOC export in native and non-native canopies Palmyra Atoll in 2019. Two samples were taken 50 m apart at each site. Three comparison samples were taken from surface waters offshore of the atoll, on the forereef, and from lagoon away from shore. Samples were processed and sent to a lab for analysis.

Tree inventory for adjacent stands of Picea mariana and Betula neoalaskana located in the 1958 Murphy Dome fire scar - 2012
This dataset contains the diameter of all trees measured as part of a project examining tree species affects on forest stand characteristics and plant-soil-microbial feedbacks. Study was conducted across 3 spatially explicit blocks containing adjacent stands of Picea mariana and Betula neoalaskana in forest that established following the 1958 Murphy Dome fire. All included tree diameter measurements were collected in Summer 2012.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Bore Hole Data from Permafrost Site Location near Fairbanks, AK 2009-2021
The active layer and permafrost are the primary subsurface components of the Arctic land-atmosphere system. A permafrost research program is proposed that combines field measurements, laboratory measurements, and analyses and interpretations of data to be obtained at long-term study sites along a transects. These sites are in undisturbed areas, span a wide range of permafrost, climatic, and environmental conditions, include drill holes in the permafrost (from 40 to 75 m in depth), and have a long time series of data.

Preface ============ USERS ARE CAUTIONED THAT THE DATA PRESENTED IN THIS DATASET ARE RAW DATA DOWNLOADED DIRECTLY FROM DATA LOGGERS; THE DATA HAVE NOT BEEN PROCESSED OR CHECKED FOR ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS OR QUALITY IN ANY CAPACITY; ANY CALCULATED VALUES DERIVE DIRECTLY FROM A DATA LOGGER. Overview ============ The CAP LTER maintains a 23-m urban eddy flux tower in the west Phoenix, AZ neighborhood of Maryvale (-112.1426 W, +33.4838 N). The tower is instrumented for long-term measurement of the covariance of turbulent eddy and radiative fluxes for the purposes of urban micrometeorological research. Additional micrometerological parameters, such as precipitation, are also measured. Select soil parameters were measured from 2012 through 2016. Eddy covariance data are collected and stored at two temporal resolutions: 10 Hz and 30-minute averages. Data presented here include only 30-minute averages. Owing to large volumes, 10-Hz data are avialable by request to the CAP LTER Information Manager (caplter.data@asu.edu).
Plethodon study from removal plots located at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory
Recent research shows Plethodon shermani and Plethodon teyahalee within the hybrid zone at the Coweeta LTER in Otto, North Carolina forage heavily on ants (>50% of all prey items consumed; found in 94% of samples). As most vascular plants in the Southern Appalachians rely on ants for seed dispersal, this significant predation on ants, especially Aphaenogaster, reveals an intriguing and important relationship between these salamanders and the vascular plant abundance and distribution within their ecosystem. Additionally, consumption of ants increases with high temperatures and low relative humidity indicating that, with climate change, the effects of Plethodon foraging behavior on woodland biodiversity will be amplified. Using a paired design, we placed removal plots along an elevational gradient within the plethodon shermani-teyahalee hybrid zone at the Coweeta LTER to observe and quantify the effect of Plethodon foraging on ant communities, seed dispersal, and vascular plant distribution by removing the salamanders from treatment plots. Foraging rates of ants, with a focus on Aphaenogaster, were monitored at treatment and control plots using direct observation/counts of ants visiting tuna bait stations.

I conducted a plant richness survey of 59 sites around Sapelo Island and St. Simons Island, Georgia, in June-July 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland, barrier island, and back-barrier hammock island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water's edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site.

Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site. This data set is a companion to PLT-GCET-0608, which provides similar data for sites around Sapelo Island, Georgia.
Arthropod pitfall trap data from 12 NPP study locations at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1996-2001
This data package contains counts and taxonomic identification of arthropods sampled by pitfall traps at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1996-2001. The objective of this study is to observe how shifts in vegetation resulting from desertification processes in the Chihuahaun desert have changed the spatial and temporal availability of resources for consumers. Desertification changes in the Jornada Basin include changes from grass to shrub dominated communities and major soil changes. If grassland systems respond to rainfall without significant lags, but shrub systems do not, then consumer species should reflect these differences. In addition, shifts from grassland to shrubland results in greater structural heterogeneity of the habitats. We hypothesized that consumer populations, diversity, and densities of some consumers will be higher in grasslands than in shrublands and will be related to the NPP of the sites. Arthropods were captured in pitfall traps at LTER III consumer plots (a subset of NPP plots) at 2 month intervals. Data collected includes number of individuals, order, family, genus, and species. This study is complete. Earlier arthropod data collected using a different study design are in package knb-lter-jrn.210008002.

Percent cover of vegetation measured by the line-intercept method at multiple locations on long-term ecosystem transects (including nitrogen fertilization treatments) at Jornada Basin LTER, 1982-2014
This data package contains data on the average percent cover of plant species on three permanent LTER-I transects at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) in southern New Mexico. Prior to becoming a livestock exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The purpose of this study was to document the vegetation changes associated with the addition of nitrogen fertilizer following nearly a century of grazing. Three permanent, parallel transects (2.7 km in length) run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford. The Treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Along each transect, 91 stations, each with a plant intercept line, are spaced at 30 meter intervals. Each plant intercept line is perpendicular to a 2.7 km transect and is 30 meters in length broken into 5 meter segments. The included dataset gives calculated average percent cover of each plant species for each of these plant intercept lines on all three LTER-I permanent transects (91 lines each). Measurements were made biannually from 1982 - 1988. After this, they are measured every 5 years. Data consists of the date, week number, transect, station number, JRN species code, USDA Plants code, species binomial, photosynthetic pathway, habit, form, and average percent cover. This study is ongoing.
BSNE aeolian dust collector sample weights from the three ConMod Pilot study locations at Jornada Basin LTER, 2008-2016
This data package contains measurements of dust collected by BSNE collectors for the Connectivity Modifier (ConMod) Pilot study plots from 2008-2016 on the Jornada Experimental Range. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 plots. The plots are 8 x 8 meters and have an 8 x 8 buffer zone on both sides of the plot (up and down). There are four BSNE (aeolian dust collector) stands for each plot, 2 in each of the 2 buffer zones (8 collectors per plot). Each stand contains 2 BSNE collectors at a 30cm height with the collection opening at 10cm x 2 cm wide x 5 cm height. These BSNE collectors are in a fixed position pointing into the direction of the prevailing wind, which corresponds to the plot alignment. The collectors in the upwind buffer are facing away from the plot and the collectors in the downwind buffer are facing into the plot. Upwind BSNEs collect the amount of dust entering the plot, and the downwind BSNEs collect the amount of dust moving off the plot. These collectors estimate the effectiveness of the plot surface in obstructing wind blown dust. This study is complete (finished in 2016) and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.
CBS03 Grasshopper sparrow surveys: densities, reproductive index, and locations of marked individuals on Konza Prairie
Data on the location, identity, and reproductive index (Vickery et al. 1992) of Grasshopper Sparrows prior to 2017, and after that, additionally many Dickcissels, Eastern Meadowlarks, Brown-headed Cowbirds and other songbirds within 10-ha plots on multiple watersheds units on Konza and on two adjoining units on the Rannells Preserve. Each plot was surveyed every ~7-10 days. These surveys documented individual sparrow, Dickcissel, and Eastern Meadowlark locations, and are used to calculate dispersal distances and territory densities and movements. Missing values in character fields denoted by NA, and in numeric fields, either -999 or -9.
GIS30 GIS Coverages Defining Sample Locations for Abiotic Datasets on Konza Prairie (1972-present)
These data show sample locations for various abiotic data collected on Konza Prairie (rain gauges, soil moisture, and stream data). Included in these data are the locations for 12 rain gauges (GIS300) on Konza Prairie. The Konza headquarters weather station formerly consisted of two gauges which were operated year-round. The Konza headquarters weather station currently consists of one Otto-Pluvio2 gauge which is operated year-round. The remaining Konza-operated gauges run from April 1 to November 1. These data are to be used in conjunction with the APT01 (precipitation) dataset. GIS305 defines the locations where measurements of soil moisture (%volume) are taken on Konza Prairie. These data are to be used in conjunction with the ASM01 (soil moisture) dataset. GIS309 defines the locations within watershed N4D of soil sampler nests. In Jan 2020, we separated the original GIS310 file 'Wells in N4D' into GIS310 'Wells in N4D' and GIS309 'Soil Sampler Nests'. Prior to then, soil sampler nests and wells were combined in GIS310. GIS310 defines the locations within watershed N4D where samples are taken for analyzing the belowground water chemistry of the watershed. These data are to be used in conjunction with the AGW01 dataset. GIS311 defines the locations of 14 wells at two sites along Kings Creek. Depth and nutrient content of groundwater is measured at these sites. These data are to be used in conjunction with the AGW02 dataset. GIS315 defines the locations of stream sampling stations within multiple Konza watersheds. These data are to be used in conjunction with the NWC, ASS, ASD, and ASW datasets. GIS320 defines the locations of the rainfall collectors used to collect the samples analyzed as a part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program. These data are to be used in conjunction with the ANA01 dataset. These data are available to download as zipped shapefiles (.zip), compressed Google Earth KML layers (.kmz).
GIS35 GIS Coverages Defining Sample Locations for Belowground Datasets on Konza Prairie (1982-present)
These data show the locations of research conducted at the below ground plots near Konza Headquarters. Record type 1 (GIS350) describes the 64 belowground plots receiving a variety of nutrient, burn, and mowing treatments. Data for BMS01, BMS02, and BNS01 are collected on these plots. Record type 6 (GIS355) describes the locations of the Micro-Rhizotrons. Two spatial datasets lie on the belowground plots, but are classified separately. These are the Lysimeters on belowground plots (GIS455) and Aboveground biomass on belowground plots (GIS505) datasets. GIS505 may be used alongside the BGPVC dataset, because it shares sample locations with PBB01. These data are available to download as zipped shapefiles (.zip), compressed Google Earth KML layers (.kmz), and associated EML metadata (.xml).
