1. Well-designed marine protected area (MPA) networks can deliver a range of ecological, economic and social benefits, and so a great deal of research has focused on developing spatial conservation prioritization tools to help identify important areas. 2. However, whilst these software tools are designed to identify MPA networks that both represent biodiversity and minimize impacts on stakeholders, they do not consider complex ecological processes. Thus, it is difficult to determine the impacts that proposed MPAs could have on marine ecosystem health, fisheries and fisheries sustainability. 3. Using the eastern English Channel as a case study, this paper explores an approach to address these issues by identifying a series of MPA networks using the Marxan and Marxan with Zones conservation planning software and linking them with a spatially explicit ecosystem model developed in Ecopath with Ecosim. We then use these to investigate potential trade-offs associated with adopting different MPA management strategies. 4. Limited-take MPAs, which restrict the use of some fishing gears, could have positive benefits for conservation and fisheries in the eastern English Channel, even though they generally receive far less attention in research on MPA network design. 5. Our findings, however, also clearly indicate that no-take MPAs should form an integral component of proposed MPA networks in the eastern English Channel, as they not only result in substantial increases in ecosystem biomass, fisheries catches and the biomass of commercially valuable target species, but are fundamental to maintaining the sustainability of the fisheries. 6. Synthesis and applications. Using the existing software tools Marxan with Zones and Ecopath with Ecosim in combination provides a powerful policy-screening approach. This could help inform marine spatial planning by identifying potential conflicts and by designing new regulations that better balance conservation objectives and stakeholder interests. In addition, it highlights that appropriate combinations of no-take and limited-take marine protected areas might be the most effective when making trade-offs between long-term ecological benefits and short-term political acceptability.
Data from: Genetic structure of introduced American mink (Neovison vison) in Patagonia: colonisation insights and implications for control and management strategies
Context: Biological invasions have caused dramatic changes in native biodiversity and ecosystem function. Studies of genetic variation and evolutionary changes are useful for understanding population dynamics during biological invasions, and shed light on management, prevention and restoration strategies. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the structure and genetic variability of American mink (Neovison vison), an invasive species in southern South America, introduced for fur farming in the 1930s. Methods: Samples from 153 mink were obtained from 12 locations in southern Chile to sequence the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and to genotype 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci. Key results: The highest mtDNA diversity was detected in Puerto Cisnes, suggesting multiple introductions and/or the most probable area where mink was first introduced. The latter is also supported by microsatellite data, because a high percentage of individuals from different locations were assigned to this location. All other locations showed low or no mtDNA diversity, possibly due to founder effect. The results also indicate marked population structure, with three genetic clusters coincident with the main historical introduction points, with low dispersal among them. Conclusions: The results suggest that control strategies for American mink in southern Chile should be concentrated on these three genetically differentiated management units, and particularly on source populations and locations with low effective population size and restricted connectivity. Implications: Genetic approaches have been used for the management of numerous alien species worldwide. Recommendations delivered here for American mink control could also be implemented in other regions and for other invasive species with similar genetic diversity distribution and connectivity.
Imperfect detection alters the outcome of management strategies for protected areas
<p>Designing protected areas configurations to maximize biodiversity is a critical conservation goal. The configuration of protected areas can significantly impact the richness and identity of the species found there; one large patch supports larger populations but can facilitate competitive exclusion. Conversely, many small habitats spreads risk but may exclude predators that typically require large home ranges. Identifying how best to design protected areas is further complicated by monitoring programs failing to detect species. Here we test the consequences of different protected area configurations using multi-trophic level experimental microcosms. We demonstrate that for a given total size, many small patches generate higher species richness, are more likely to contain predators, and have fewer extinctions compared to single large patches. However, the relationship between the size and number of patches and species richness was greatly affected by insufficient monitoring, and could lead to incorrect conservation decisions, especially for higher trophic levels.</p>
Dataset on laboratory soil greenhouse gas fluxes and soil microbial parameters as affected by soil management strategies in SOMMIT long term experiments
<p>We present a database containing over 50 soil-microbial parameters from eight long-term European experiments where specific soil management strategies are compared. Intact topsoil cores (7 cm diameter, 7 cm height) were collected from LTE participating in the tasks WP3.2 and WP3.3. from the SOMMIT experiment, and incubated under standard conditions in the laboratory. The soil management strategies considered at the eight LTEs ("ACBB Estrées-Mons, France", "Rutzendorf_17, Austria", , "Foggia, Italy", "ULBF-Ljubljana, Slovenia", "Toholampi, Finland", "Senés, Spain", "La Poveda, Spain" and "Grabow 1, Poland") included crop residue management, addition of different types of compost and sludge and biochar addition. All LTEs are referenced according to the LTE Index from https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7598122 . The soil cores were subjected to i) a pre-equilibration phase of five days ("pre.inc"), followed by ii) a drying phase ("DR") of ten days and finally a iii) rewetting (five days, "RW"). A subset of the cores were kept under iv) constantly moist conditions for comparison purposes ("moist"). By the end of the "pre.inc" phase, soil microbial biomass, soil microbial community (phospholipidic fatty acids), enzymatic activities and soil nutrient data were collected. After the "pre.inc" phase, soil fluxes of N2O and CO2 were monitored with an automated system at subdaily temporal resolution. In addition, soil nutrients and microbial biomass data were estimated during at the end of the "DR", "RW" and "moist" phases. This dataset contributes to a better understanding of the linkages between soil conditions, soil microbes and soil greenhouse gas fluxes as affected by different soil management strategies across European agro-ecosystems. This product is part of the EJP SOIL internal project SOMMIT, and serves as deliverable WP3.4</p>
Modeling management strategies for chronic disease in wildlife: predictions for the control of respiratory disease in bighorn sheep
<p>1. Controlling persistent infectious disease in wildlife populations is an on-going challenge for wildlife managers and conservationists worldwide.</p> <p>2. Here, we develop a dynamic pathogen transmission model capturing key features of M. ovipneumoniae infection, a major cause of population declines in North American bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). We explore the effects of model assumptions and parameter values on disease dynamics, including density versus frequency dependent transmission, the inclusion of a carrier class versus a longer infectious period, host survival rates, disease-induced mortality and recovery rates, and the epidemic growth rate.</p> <p>3. We compare the effectiveness of a suite of management actions following an epidemic, including test-and-remove, depopulation-and-reintroduction, range expansion, herd augmentation, and density reduction.</p> <p>4. Our results suggest that test-and-remove, depopulation-and-reintroduction, and range expansion have the potential to facilitate recovery of persistently infected bighorn sheep herds post-epidemic. By contrast, augmentation could lead to worse outcomes than those expected in the absence of management. Management that improves host survival or reduces disease-induced mortality are also likely to improve population size and persistence of chronically infected herds.</p> <p>5. Dynamic transmission models like the one employed here offer a structured, logical approach towards exploring hypotheses and can serve as a basis for planning field experiments and adaptive management. Models should be used iteratively with the field empirical approaches to triangulate on better approaches to wildlife management.</p>
Analyzing evolutionary game theory in epidemic management: A study on social distancing and mask-wearing strategies
<p>When combating a respiratory disease outbreak, the effectiveness of protective measures hinges on spontaneous shifts in human behavior driven by risk perception and careful cost-benefit analysis. In this study, a novel concept has been introduced, integrating social distancing and mask-wearing strategies into a unified framework that combines evolutionary game theory with an extended classical epidemic model. To yield deeper insights into human decision-making during COVID-19, we integrate both the prevalent dilemma faced at the epidemic's onset regarding mask-wearing and social distancing practices, along with a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis. We explore the often-overlooked aspect of effective mask adoption among undetected infectious individuals to evaluate the significance of source control. Both undetected and detected infectious individuals can significantly reduce the risk of infection for non-masked individuals by wearing effective facemasks. When the economic burden of mask usage becomes unsustainable in the community, promoting affordable and safe social distancing becomes vital in slowing the epidemic's progress, allowing crucial time for public health preparedness. In contrast, as the indirect expenses associated with safe social distancing escalate, affordable and effective facemask usage could be a feasible option. In our analysis, it was observed that during periods of heightened infection risk, there is a noticeable surge in public interest and dedication to complying with social distancing measures. However, its impact diminishes beyond a certain disease transmission threshold, as this strategy cannot completely eliminate the disease burden in the community. Maximum public compliance with social distancing and mask-wearing strategies can be achieved when they are affordable for the community. While implementing both strategies together could ultimately reduce the epidemic's effective reproduction number (Re) to below one, countries still have the flexibility to prioritize either of them, easing strictness on the other based on their socio-economic conditions.</p>
