Angle-dependent magnetization dynamics with mirror-symmetric excitations in artificial quasicrystalline nanomagnet lattices
<p>The file ManscuriptDataFiles.7z contains RAW spectroscopy data, origin plot file, micromagnetic simulation MIF files at 100 mT used in the manuscript entitiled "Angle-dependent magnetization dynamics with mirror-symmetric excitations in artificial quasicrystalline nanomagnet lattices" that appeared in Physical Review B, <strong>98</strong>, 174408 (2018).</p> <p>Manuscript Abstract: We report angle-dependent spin-wave spectroscopy on aperiodic quasicrystalline magnetic lattices, i.e., Ammann, Penrose P2 and P3 lattices made of large arrays of interconnected Ni<sub>80</sub>Fe<sub>20</sub> nanobars. Spin-wave spectra obtained in the nearly saturated state contain distinct sets of resonances with characteristic angular dependencies for applied in-plane magnetic fields. Micromagnetic simulations allow us to attribute detected resonances to mode profiles with specific mirror symmetries. Spectra in the reversal regime show systematic emergence and disappearance of spin-wave modes indicating reprogrammable magnonic characteristics.</p>

Code and Data for "Green Growth in the Mirror of History: Long-Term Evidence on Decoupling Emissions from GDP"
<p><span>The code and files contained in this repository allow for the reproduction of the results and figures from the paper <em>“Green Growth in the Mirror of History: Long-Term Evidence on Decoupling Emissions from GDP”</em> (submitted to <em>Nature Communications</em>). In particular, it generates the historical database of gross domestic product (GDP), population, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGe) at the national, regional, and global levels from 1820 to 2022. It also includes the code required for data processing and allows reproduction of all figures and analyses in the manuscript.</span></p> <p><span>The repository is organized into a set of folders functioning as an R project. </span><span>These folders are as follows:</span></p> <p><span><span>·<span> </span></span></span><strong><span><span>data_input:</span></span></strong><span><span> Contains the databases and files necessary to run our code that have been preprocessed by ourselves. Dataset from: Towards continuum gyrokinetic study of high-field mirrors
<p>High-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnetic mirrors under development exploit strong fields with high mirror ratio to compress loss cones and enhance confinement, and may offer cheaper, more compact fusion power plant candidates. This new class of devices could exhibit largely unexplored interchange and gradient-driven modes. Such instabilities, and methods to stabilize them, can be studied with gyrokinetics given the strong magnetization and prevalence of kinetic effects. Our focus here is to: a) determine if oft-used gyrokinetic models for open field lines produce the electron-confining (Pastukhov) electrostatic potential; b) examine and address challenges faced by gyrokinetic codes in studying HTS mirrors. We show that a one-dimensional limit of said models self-consistently develops a potential qualitatively reaching the analytical Pastukhov level. Additionally, we describe the computational challenges of studying high mirror ratios with open field line gyrokinetic solvers, and offer a force softening method to mitigate small time steps needed for time integration in colossal magnetic field gradients produced by HTS coils, providing a 19X speedup.</p>
Data from: Costs of social conflict: do injuries mirror patterns of aggression in blue monkeys?
<p class="MsoNormal">In wild animals, injuries often arise from intraspecific contests, and therefore may reveal challenges and selection pressures related to social conflict. We evaluated whether known aggressive patterns predicted injury patterns in wild blue monkeys, in which most injuries of known cause resulted from conspecifics. After describing injuries and their causes in 12 groups monitored over 13 years, we compared injury distributions across age-sex class and season. Adult males were much more likely, adult females about equally likely, and immatures much less likely to sustain injuries relative to random expectation. Among adult males, injuries were most common in the mating season. Using multivariate models, we examined how individual, social, and demographic factors predicted injury rates in adult females and immatures. Rates were higher for adult females versus all immatures, for individuals in smaller groups, and for those living in groups frequently exposed to novel adult males and with few immature members. Among older juvenile and adult females, these trends persisted; additionally, pregnant and lactating females were injured less often than others, but there was no evidence that dominance rank influenced injury rates. For juveniles, injury rates increased similarly with age in both sexes, providing only limited evidence that heightened aggression motivates natal dispersal by males. Most findings supported the hypothesis that aggression increases injury risk. Costs of within-group aggressive competition may manifest in ways other than injury, however, especially for females. We highlight the importance in comparative analyses of considering both within- and between-group aggression and demographic variables as influencing injury risk. <span> </span></p>
Demonstration of the Autonomous Precise Assembly of Segmented Mirror Tiles for a Space Telescope
<p>The video shows a complete sequence of the demonstration of the autonomous precise assembly of segmented mirror tiles for a space telescope. Within the EU project PULSAR, DLR, together with CSEM (Switzerland), Space Application Services (Belgium) and Magellium (France) developed the demonstrator of Precise Assembly of Mirror Tiles (dPAMT), focused on assembling a functional section of a primary mirror using an autonomous mobile robot. The demonstrator used a KUKA KMR robot, endowed with a KUKA iiwa arm, for manipulating the segmented mirror tiles through the HOTDOCK standard interface, and performing the assembly using compliant control.</p>

Handheld Bakelite Mirror
CAP found this handheld bakelite mirror while excavating near the Emmons Amphitheater in the Brody Complex on MSU's campus. This area was originally the East Lansing city dump from about 1920 to the late 1940s or early 1950s when MSC expanded into the area. Bakelite was an early plastic that began production in the first decade of the 20th century, reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s, but declined throughout the 1950s. This was due to new plastics that allowed more vibrant and a wider range of colors as bakelite allowed for mostly darker tones. However, bakelite was credited with ushering in the "Polymer Age" or the "Age of Plastics". The whole piece is convexly curved when looking at the mirror. Both the glass and the bakelite have beveled edges as the only physical decorations. A tortoiseshell design is worked into the bakelite itself, a design that's popular even today.
