Data to support: Moving beyond heritability in the search for coral adaptive potential
<p><span>Global environmental change is happening at unprecedented rates. Coral reefs are among the ecosystems most threatened by global change. For wild populations to persist, they must adapt. Knowledge shortfalls about corals' complex ecological and evolutionary dynamics, however, stymie predictions about potential adaptation to future conditions. Here, we review adaptation through the lens of quantitative genetics. We argue that coral adaptation studies can benefit greatly from "wild" quantitative genetic methods, where traits are studied in wild populations undergoing natural selection, genomic relationship matrices can replace breeding experiments, and analyses can be extended to examine genetic constraints among traits. Individuals with advantageous genotypes for anticipated future conditions can be identified. Finally, genomic genotyping supports simultaneous consideration of how genetic diversity is arrayed across geographic and environmental distances, providing greater context for predictions of phenotypic evolution at a metapopulation scale.</span></p>
Dazzled by shine: gloss as an antipredator strategy in fast moving prey
<p>Previous studies on stationary prey have found mixed results for the role of gloss in predator avoidance – some have found that gloss can act as warning colouration or improve camouflage, whereas others detected no survival benefit. An alternative untested hypothesis is that gloss could provide protection in the form of dynamic dazzle. Fast-moving animals that are glossy produce flashes of light that increase in frequency at higher speeds, which could make it harder for predators to track and accurately locate prey. We tested this hypothesis by presenting praying mantids with glossy or matte targets moving at slow and fast speeds. Mantids were less likely to strike glossy targets, independently of speed. Additionally, we found that compared to matte targets, mantids were less likely to track glossy targets and more likely to hit the target with one rather than both raptorial arms, but only when targets were moving fast. These results support the hypothesis that gloss may have a function as an antipredator strategy by reducing the ability of predators to track and accurately target fast-moving prey. </p>
Infants on the Move: Bibliometric Analyses of Observational versus Digital Means of Screening Infant Development
<p>Datasets, High Resolution Images and Video tutorials for Bibliometric use on neonatal General Movements Assessment</p> <p>Neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses have increased significantly over the years, though the average age of detection is 4.5 years old. This delay is partly due to reliance on social-communication criteria. These criteria require a level of maturation that takes much longer than scaffolding elements of neuromotor control. Early components of neurodevelopment include early evolution of reflexes, development of interactions between central pattern generators and cortical structures, maturation of intentional movements and their overall sensation. Such elements have been studied in General Movement Assessment (GMA) using observational means, but the last two decades have seen a surge in digital tools (biosensors, video-based pose estimation and algorithms) that permit non-invasive tracking of newborns’ movements. Despite their importance, these tools are not yet broadly used. In this work, using CiteSpace, VOSViewer and SciMAT software, we investigate the evolution of the literature on GMA and the methods in use today, to estimate how digital techniques are being adopted. To that end, we created maps of key word co-occurrence networks, co-author networks, document co-citation analysis and strategic diagrams of 295 publications based on a search in the Web of Science, Dimensions and SCOPUS databases for: ‘general movement assessment’ OR ‘general movements assessment’. The nodes on the maps were categorized by size, cluster groups and year of publication. We found that the state-of-the-art methodology to diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders still relies heavily on observation. Several groups in classical GMA research have branched out to incorporate new techniques, but few groups have adopted digital means. We report on additional analyses of methods and biosensors usage and propose that combining traditional clinical observation criteria with digital means may allow earlier diagnoses and interventional therapies for infants.</p>
Forests on the move: Tracking climate-related treeline changes in mountains of the northeastern United States
<div><em>Aim</em></div> <div>Alpine treeline ecotones are influenced by environmental drivers and are anticipated to shift their locations in response to changing climate. Our goal was to determine the extent of recent climate-induced treeline advance in the northeastern United States, and we hypothesized that treelines have advanced upslope in complex ways depending on treeline structure and environmental conditions.</div> <div> </div> <div><em>Location</em></div> <div>White Mountain National Forest (New Hampshire) and Baxter State Park (Maine), USA.</div> <div> </div> <div><em>Taxon</em></div> <div>High-elevation trees – <em>Abies balsamea, Picea mariana, and Betula cordata</em>. </div> <div> </div> <div><em>Methods</em></div> <div>We compared current and historical high-resolution aerial imagery to quantify the advance of treelines over the last four decades, and link treeline changes to treeline form (demography) and environmental drivers. Spatial analyses were coupled with ground surveys of forest vegetation and topographical features to ground-truth treeline classification and provide information on treeline demography and additional potential drivers of treeline locations. We used multiple linear regression models to examine the importance of both topographic and climatic variables on treeline advance.</div> <div> </div> <div><em>Results</em></div> <div>Regional treelines have significantly shifted upslope over the past several decades (on average by 3 m/decade). Diffuse treelines (low tree densities and temperature limited) experienced significantly greater upslope shifts (5 m/decade) compared to other treeline forms, suggesting that both climate warming and treeline demography are important drivers of treeline shifts. Topographical features (slope, aspect) as well as climate (accumulated growing degree days, AGDD) explained significant variation in the magnitude of treeline advance (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.32).</div> <div> </div> <div><em>Main conclusions</em></div> <div>The observed advance of regional treelines suggests that climate warming induces upslope treeline shifts particularly at higher elevations where greater upslope shifts occurred in areas with lower AGDD. Overall, our findings suggest that diffuse treelines at high-elevations are more a of a result of climate warming than other alpine treeline ecotones and thus they can serve as key indicators of ongoing climatic changes.</div>

Potential rapidly moving landslide hazards in Western Oregon, clipped to Andrews Experimental Forest, 1999 to 2002
Landslides are a serious geologic hazard, threatening public safety, natural resources, and infrastructure, and costing millions of dollars for repairs each year in Oregon. This map of areas where rapidly moving landslides pose hazards in western Oregon is part of the State's attempt to protect lives and property. The overview map delineates zones that are prone to landslide hazards, especially rapidly moving landslides. These zones provide information to local governments about property that might require more site-specific evaluation. The map is in digital format and was produced with data at a scale of 1:24,000 (1 in. = 2,000 ft). Creation of the map involved the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling, checking and calibrating with limited field evaluations, and comparing with historic landslide inventories. The extent and severity of the hazard posed by rapidly moving landslides varies considerably across western Oregon. In general, the most hazardous areas are mountainous terrains, which are usually sparsely populated, especially drainage channels and depositional fans associated with debris flows. Where hazard areas intersect with human development, use of the map can help to assess the risk and prioritize risk-reduction activities. Various options are available to reduce the risk of landslide losses. Risk-reduction activities can include engineering solutions, public education, warning systems, temporary road closures and evacuation, land use regulation, and many other options. Although this project addresses a range of rapidly moving landslides, this map is not a compilation of all possible landslide hazards.

The last moves: the effect of hunting and culling on the risk of disease spread from a population of reindeer
<p>1. Hunting and culling are frequently used to combat infectious wildlife diseases. The aim is to markedly lower population density in order to limit disease transmission or to eradicate the host. Massive host culling can yield a trade-off when combating wildlife disease; it follows that intrusive actions may have unintended behavioural side-effects, leading to the geographic spread of disease. The manner in which such excessive hunting and culling of hosts can affect the movement and dispersion of cervids has not been studied.</p> <p>2. In this study, we quantified the behaviour (daily movements and habitat use) and dispersion of GPS-marked reindeer (n = 24) before and during the eradication of an entire population (>2000 reindeer) infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Norway. We compared behaviour and dispersion during 10 ordinary hunting seasons (2007-16), an extended hunt in 2017 and marksmen culling (2017/18).</p> <p>3. Seasonality had a major impact on movements. Reindeer movements during the early hunting season (20 August–20 September) did not increase the overall movements compared to that in the pre-hunt season (20 July–19 August), while extended hunting into October (as in 2017) and marksmen culling from November to February markedly increased daytime movements relative to that normally observed in this time of the year. Towards the end of the eradication, the remaining reindeer sought refuge at restricted high-elevation areas with limited forage production. Reindeer used novel areas towards the perimeter of the range, but active herding during culling stopped one herd from leaving the CWD zone.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications: With emerging wildlife diseases, host culling is becoming a more frequently used tool for managers in Europe. Our study highlights the potential trade-off between combating disease transmission within a population and the risk of geographic spread. Such insight is important to design mitigation measures, such as perimeter fencing or herding, to avoid the risk of the geographic spread of disease in cases of severe and economically important wildlife diseases.</p>
Ancient life and moving fluids
<p>Over 3.7 billion years of Earth history, life has evolved complex adaptations to help navigate and interact with the fluid environment. Consequently, fluid dynamics has become a powerful tool for studying ancient fossils, providing insights into the paleobiology and -ecology of extinct organisms from across the tree of life. In recent years, this approach has been extended to the Ediacara biota, an enigmatic assemblage of Neoproterozoic soft-bodied organisms that represent the first major radiation of macroscopic eukaryotes. Reconstructing the ways in which Ediacaran organisms interacted with the fluids has provided new insights into how these organisms fed, moved, and interacted within communities. In this paper, we provide an in-depth review of fluid physics aimed at paleobiologists, in which we dispel misconceptions related to the Reynolds number and associated flow conditions, and specify the governing equations of fluid dynamics. We then review recent advances in Ediacaran paleobiology resulting from the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We provide a worked example and account of best practice in CFD analyses of fossils, including the first large eddy simulations (LES) performed on extinct organisms. Lastly, we identify key questions, barriers, and emerging techniques in fluid dynamics, which will not only allow us to better understand the earliest animal ecosystems, but also help develop new paleobiological tools for studying ancient life.</p>
