Tailored nano-columnar La2NiO4 cathodes for improved electrode performance
<p>La<sub>2</sub>NiO<sub>4</sub> is a promising cathode material for intermediate and low temperature solid oxide cell applications, due to good electronic and ionic conductivity and high oxygen exchange activity with a low activation energy. Oxygen incorporation and transport in La<sub>2</sub>NiO<sub>4 </sub>(LNO) thin films is limited by surface reactions. Hence, tailoring the morphology is expected to lead to an overall improvement of electrode performance. We report on the growth of to nano-architectured La<sub>2</sub>NiO<sub>4</sub> thin film electrodes by PI-MOCVD, achieving vertically gapped columns with multi-fold active surface area, leading to faster oxygen exchange. This nano-rod structure is rooted in a dense bottom layer serving as good electronic and ionic conduction pathway. The microstructure is tuned by modification of the growth temperature and characterised by SEM, TEM and XRD. We studied the effect of surface activity by electrical conductivity relaxation measurements in fully dense and columnar-structured La<sub>2</sub>NiO<sub>4</sub> thin films of various thicknesses on single crystal substrates. Our results indicate that the increased surface area, in combination with the opening of different surface terminations, leads to a significant enhancment of the total exchange activity in columnar structured films.</p> <p> </p>
Data for: A monolithically sculpted van der Waals nano-opto-electro-mechanical coupler
<p>The nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems (NOEMS) are a class of hybrid solid devices that hold promises in both classical and quantum manipulations of the interplay between one or more degrees of freedom in optical, electrical and mechanical modes. To date, studies of NOEMS using van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are very limited, although vdW materials are known for emerging phenomena such as spin, valley, and topological physics. Here, we devise a universal method to easily and robustly fabricate vdW heterostructures into an architecture that hosts opto-electro-mechanical couplings in one single device. We demonstrated several functionalities, including nano-mechanical resonator, vacuum channel diodes, and ultra-fast thermo-radiator, using monolithically sculpted graphene NOEMS as a platform. Optical readout of electric and magnetic field tuning of mechanical resonance in a CrOCl/graphene vdW NOEMS is further demonstrated. Our results suggest that the introduction of the vdW heterostructure into the NOEMS family will be of particular potential for the development of novel lab-on-a-chip systems.</p>
DFT investigation on the application of pure and doped X12N12 (X = B and Al) fullerene-like nano-cages towards the adsorption of temozolomide
<p>The sensitivity of pure and doped X<sub>12</sub> N<sup><sub>12</sub></sup> (X = B and Al) fullerene-like nano-cages (FLNs) toward the anticancer drug temozolomide (TMZ) is probed herein at DFT/M06-2X-D3/6-311G(d,p) theoretical level in both gas phase and water. A noticeable affinity of the FLNs toward TMZ was observed along with the negative gas-phase adsorption energies -1.37 and -2.09 eV for the most stable configurations of pure B12N12 and Al12N12 pristines, respectively. Considerable charge transfer from TMZ to the FLNs was also revealed via NBO analysis and the Hirshfeld atomic charges, making the dipole moment vector of the molecular complexes to be oriented from the nano-cages to the TMZ moiety. Furthermore, a percentage decrease in the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔEg) of 38.09 and 17.72 % was obtained for the B12N12 and Al12N12 nano-cages, respectively. The percentage change in ΔEg was found to be reduced upon doping and solvation of the FLNs. Finally, a recovery time in vacuum ultraviolet light of 1.06 s is found for the complex with pure B12N12, which in addition to the above-mentioned parameters make this boron nitride cage the best sensor for TMZ, among the FLNs considered in the present work.</p>

<p>This animated video is designed to reach the general public, given its cartoon form and its non-technical content that aims to present the project in general. However, it is also aimed at getting potential stakeholders attracted by the ideas conveyed by the project to take a more conscious interest in SiC Nano for PicoGeo. The main message conveyed given by the video is that improving the sensitivity of current strain meter technology – i.e., the goal of the Sic nano for PicoGeo project – is key to enhancing geoscience and geohazard monitoring, which directly affects the more excellent safety of the population in the earthquake and volcanic risk areas. </p>

Feeding foliar nano-selenium biofortified Panax notoginseng could reduce the occurrence of glycolipid metabolism disorder in mice caused by high-fat diets
<p><span>Nano-selenium (nano-Se) has been extensively explored as a biostimulant for improving the quality of grain crops. However, there are few reports about the effect on the medicinal components of Chinese herbal medicine cultured with nano-Se. Here, we sprayed nano-Se during the cultivation of </span><span><em>Panax notoginseng</em> (SePN), and measured the changes of medicinal components compared with conventional <em>Panax notoginseng</em> (PN). Furthermore, we identified a more pronounced effect of SePN on reducing obesity in animals compared with PN. By measuring antioxidant capacity, histopathology, gene expression related to glycolipid metabolism, and gut microbiota composition, we propose a potential mechanism for SePN to improve animal health.</span><span> Compared with the control groups, foliar spraying of nano-Se increased saponins content (Rb2, Rb3, Rc, F2, Rb2, and Rf) in the roots of <em>Panax notoginseng</em>, and the content of Rb2 increased by 3.9 times in particular. Interestingly, animal studies indicated that taking selenium-rich <em>Panax notoginseng</em> (SePN) can further ameliorate liver antioxidation (SOD, MDA, and GSH) and enzyme activities involved in glycolipid metabolism (ATGL and PFK). It also relieved inflammation and regulated the expression of genes (<em>MCAD</em>, <em>PPAR-α</em>, and <em>PCSK9</em>) related to fatty acid oxidation.</span> <span>The abundance ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroides and beneficial bacteria abundance (<em>Bifidobacterium</em>, <em>Butyricimonas</em>, and <em>Parasutterella</em>) in gut microbiota were improved relative to the control. In summary, the application of nano-Se on PN may</span> <span>effectively raise the content of <em>Panax notoginseng</em> saponins (PNS) and immensely lower the risk of metabolic disorders of glycolipids.</span></p>

<p>More than 1000 values (i.e. about 170 articles) of the 1995-2015 period containing measured values of O2, CO2 and H2O permeability in polymer-based nanocomposites were collected from the available literature and capitalized in this dedicated on-line database. These data were assorted and compared in order to decipher the role of particle shape (either iso-dimensional, elongated or platelets nanoparticles) on the reduction of the relative permeability of the nano composite. The proposed on-line database consists in the first and unprecedented compilation of permeability values for nanocomposite based materials</p>
