A Performance Evaluation of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) over the Tibetan Plateau
<p>The data is associated with the paper titled "A Performance Evaluation of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) over the Tibetan Plateau" which is published in Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology with the doi: 10.1175/JTECH-D-17-0144.1. The abstract is as follows:</p> <p>A systematic evaluation of the performance of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) over the Tibetan Plateau is conducted using data from the Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Location System (CGLLS) developed by the State Grid Corporation of China for 2013–15 and lightning data from the satellitebased Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) for 2014–15. The average spatial location separation magnitudes in the midsouthern Tibetan Plateau (MSTP) region between matched WWLLN and CGLLS strokes and over the whole Tibetan Plateau between matched WWLLN and LIS flashes were 9.97 and 10.93 km, respectively. The detection efficiency (DE) of the WWLLN rose markedly with increasing stroke peak current, and the mean stroke peak currents of positive and negative cloud-toground (CG) lightning detected by theWWLLNin the MSTP region were 62.43 and256.74 kA, respectively. The duration, area, and radiance of the LIS flashes that were also detected by the WWLLN were 1.27, 2.65, and 4.38 times those not detected by the WWLLN. The DE of the WWLLN in the MSTP region was 9.37% for CG lightning and 2.58% for total lightning. Over the Tibetan Plateau, the DE of the WWLLN for total lightning was 2.03%. In the MSTP region, theCGflash data made up 71.98% of allWWLLNflash data. Based on the abovementioned results, the ratio of intracloud (IC) lightning to CG lightning in the MSTP region was estimated to be 4.05.</p>

Data from: Performance of social network sensors during Hurricane Sandy
Information flow during catastrophic events is a critical aspect of disaster management. Modern communication platforms, in particular online social networks, provide an opportunity to study such flow and derive early-warning sensors, thus improving emergency preparedness and response. Performance of the social networks sensor method, based on topological and behavioral properties derived from the "friendship paradox", is studied here for over 50 million Twitter messages posted before, during, and after Hurricane Sandy. We find that differences in users' network centrality effectively translate into moderate awareness advantage (up to 26 hours); and that geo-location of users within or outside of the hurricane-affected area plays a significant role in determining the scale of such an advantage. Emotional response appears to be universal regardless of the position in the network topology, and displays characteristic, easily detectable patterns, opening a possibility to implement a simple "sentiment sensing" technique that can detect and locate disasters.

ASEAN as network governance: an alternative lens to evaluate policymaking and performance
<p><strong><span>Background:</span></strong><span> This article offers a new perspective of ASEAN as network governance (NG) at its core, with a hierarchical organisational structure as its front (hybrid organisation). The works on network forms of organisation and policy network theory (PNT) were used </span><span>for</span><span> the analysis. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span> Two <span>case studies from the ASEAN </span><span>Community</span><span> were selected to show the applicability and effectiveness of NG. </span><span>They were selected for their prominence and the prevalence of critical comments on their ineffectiveness in promoting ASEAN's integration. A study on how these policies are made and implemented in ASEAN was evaluated using a qualitative research methodology by analysing existing literature. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> The findings show </span><span>ASEAN </span><span>as a hybrid structure that has helped in two ways critical to </span><span>ASEAN's</span><span> survival and relevance</span><span>.</span><span> First, </span><span>the</span><span> approach provides legitimacy for ASEAN in the international community by purposefully adopting structures similar to the EU without the supranational elements. Second, it highlights ASEAN's goal of asserting </span><span>its </span><span>centrality. While adopting a hybrid structure has led to the soft institutionalisation of ASEAN, characterised by a less empowered secretariat, whose member states are the decision-makers and implementors of policies, adopting NG better reflects the underpinnings allowing a more nuanced assessment of </span><span>its</span><span> performance. In addition, it opens a pathway to recognising the states' autonomy where the extent of actors' will and interests leads to decision</span><span>-</span><span>making and defines ASEAN's performance.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions</strong>: </span><span>This article demonstrates ASEAN's goal to pursue ASEAN centrality in regional cooperation and institutional arrangements through the alternative approach of NG. NG allows for a nuanced assessment of ASEAN's performance by first highlighting ASEAN's context and history and emphasising the role of member states as decision-makers and implementers of policies. The NG framework has contributed to ASEAN's legitimacy and centrality, fostering regional integration despite its inherent limitations.</span></p>

The performance of permutations and exponential random graph models when analysing animal networks (R code and data)
<p>Social network analysis is a suite of approaches for exploring relational data. Two approaches commonly used to analyse animal social network data are permutation-based tests of significance and exponential random graph models. However, the performance of these approaches when analysing different types of network data has not been simultaneously evaluated. Here we test both approaches to determine their performance when analysing a range of biologically realistic simulated animal social networks. We examined the false positive and false negative error rate of an effect of a two-level explanatory variable (e.g. sex) on the number and combined strength of an individual's network connections. We measured error rates for two types of simulated data collection methods in a range of network structures, and with/without a confounding effect and missing observations. Both methods performed consistently well in networks of dyadic interactions, and worse on networks constructed using observations of individuals in groups. Exponential random graph models had a marginally lower rate of false positives than permutations in most cases. Phenotypic assortativity had a large influence on the false positive rate, and a smaller effect on the false negative rate for both methods in all network types. Aspects of within- and between-group network structure influenced error rates, but not to the same extent. In grouping-event based networks, increased sampling effort marginally decreased rates of false negatives, but increased rates of false positives for both analysis methods. These results provide guidelines for biologists analysing and interpreting their own network data using these methods.</p>

<p>This dataset is associated with the paper “Trade-offs in Coordination Strategies for Networked Jazz Performances” and includes recordings of improvisations by jazz duos over a network.</p> <p><strong>Introduction:</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes data from approximately four hours of live, improvised musical duo performances over a simulated network environment collected in LOCATION REMOVED FOR PEER REVIEW. Data includes audio and video recordings of 130 individual performances, biometric data, and subjective evaluations and comments from the musicians. The primary aim of the project was to collect data via a novel performance capture and manipulation system for use in the empirical modelling of ensemble coordination strategies during networked music-making. This analysis is reported in ANONYMIZED FOR PEER REVIEW. Please refer to this publication for full details on the data collection procedure.</p> <p>The ten musicians shown in these recordings were recruited for their expertise in jazz improvisation. They were grouped into five duos consisting each of one pianist and drummer, with no musician performing in more than one duo. Participants were instructed to improvise together over a standard twelve-bar blues musical structure, but following a formula which required them to provide a clear and unambiguous pulse of continuous quarter notes. Varying amounts of network latency and jitter were simulated for each performance, consisting respectively of the minimum amount of delay applied to the live feedback a musician heard from their partner and the degree that this delay varied. The amount of latency and jitter applied to the performance is summarised in the file or directory name for each performance and is described in detail in the above publication.
