Flow direction grid at 1 kilometer resolution for North Slope drainage basins, Alaska

We derived and evaluated a 1 kilometer spatial resolution flow direction grid for the terrestrial drainage of the North Slope of Alaska. The region is resolved by 182,722 grid cells and the associated connectivity. It is bounded by the Brooks Range and Beaufort Sea coast, and extends from the northern Chukchi Sea coast eastward to the small rivers near 140 degrees West. The dataset is provided in raster and tabular format, with the latter including coordinates, river basin identifier, and downstream reach and direction for each grid cell in the region. Over three dozen river basins are identified by name in an associated lookup table. This new mapping resolves the terrestrial drainages for rivers exporting freshwater, nutrients, and other materials to Elson, Simpson, Jago, Kaktovik, and other coastal lagoons at a resolution that captures important processes linked to surface and subsurface hydrological flows. Our analysis suggests that the mapping exhibits notable similarity in basin area boundaries relative to the benchmark USGS National Hydrography Dataset.

Carbon Dynamics Along a Permafrost Gradient at Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) in Interior Alaska: Slope data in a 75x75m spatial domain along a permafrost and vegetation gradient.

This dataset includes landscape slope data. Project summary: Specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit dry mass) is a key canopy structural characteristic, a measure of photosynthetic capacity, and an important input into many terrestrial process models. Although many studies have examined SLA variation, relatively few data exist from high latitude, climate-sensitive permafrost regions. We measured SLA and soil and topographic properties across a boreal forest permafrost transition, in which forest composition changed as permafrost deepened from 54 to >150 cm over 75 m hillslope transects in Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, Alaska. This is an exploratory study to begin understanding SLA variation and controls thereof in a non-contiguous permafrost system.

Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (drainage area, slope, particle size data)

This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. This dataset contains the location code (visually categorized basin landcover), drainage area, slope, riparian code (visually categorized riparian conditions), percent fines (<2mm), and median particle size (D50) calculated from a Wolman pebble count. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. Within each reach, the active and bankfull channel widths were measured every 5 meters, where active channel width was defined as the vegetationless channel bed from left vegetation break to right vegetation break. All wood exceeding 10 cm diameter and 1.0 m length were tallied. A Wolman pebble count (N = 100) was conducted on the coarsest riffle in each stream reach. Slopes were measured from the upstream end of riffles over three riffle-to-riffle sequences with a level rod and tape. Riparian conditions at each reach were visually categorized. Drainage area was determined from 2006 Landsat imagery. Gopher-disturbed and undisturbed soil Oribatid mite data for Martinelli slope, 1988.

Soil cores were collected from undisturbed and pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) disturbed alpine tundra. Cores were split in half longitudinally with one half being used for extraction and identification of Oribatid mites. Disturbed soils included both old and fresh gopher mounds and all study sites were located on the Martinelli slope directly above the 25 permanent plots. The cores were collected in 1988.

Pocket gopher esker-krummholz distance data for Martinelli slope and North of Tvan, 1995.

Two ares of Niwot Ridge were examined for simultaneous occurrences of krummholz and eskers created by Thomomys talpoides (Northern pocket gopher) burrowing, to establish a relationship between snowpack and gopher habitat. The krummholz east and northeast of the Martinelli slope and the krummholz north of T-van were surveyed for the abundance of gopher eskers. Using a tape measure, the minimum and maximum distances of the eskers from the krummholz vegetation were measured, with a value of 0 m indicating that the nearest soil core was immediately adjacent to or actually underlying a branch of the tree. With the use of a compass, both the northernmost and southernmost bearings were measured from the krummholz to the esker. The krummholz were tagged at the northeasternmost point whenever possible for consistency, or the northernmost branches of the leeward side of the tree island. All measurements were taken from the nearest protruberance of the krummholz.

Krummholz island size, soil inorganic, and organic property data for Saddle, S slope of Niwot Ridge, 1994.

Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) tree islands modify the characteristics of surface soils in alpine tundra. Soil C content of the approximate A horizon (top 15 cm) of soil was measured during the summer of 1994 on windward, leeward, upslope and downslope sides, and interiors of tree islands on Niwot Ridge, Colorado, USA. A subset of samples from these sites were also used for CHN analysis and were measured for total phosphorus using persulfate digestions and colorimetric measurements. Results indicate significant (p<.0001) reductions of percent of dry mass represented by C in soil and significant (p<.04) declines in absolute C storage among soils on the windward sides of tree islands as compared to the upslope and downslope controls, and a tendency for reduced C on the leeward sides as well. Surface organic matter (O horizon) accumulations averaging 9.6 +/- 1.02 kg/m^2 are found in the interior of tree islands, but this material, in addition to roots, is not stabilized in the A horizons of soil. The movement of tree islands can therefore be regarded as disturbances to soil building processes in alpine tundra. Timberline forest and adjacent tundra patches of similar aspect and slope were also sampled for comparisons of soil C content. Results indicated similar C storage beneath trees and tundra at this lower elevation. The wind-induced movement of tree islands across the tundra creates enhanced snowpack within the trees and on their leeward sides. Shading and moisture conditions of the soil are altered, leading to C deposition and decomposition dynamics which differ from that of unimpacted tundra surface soils. However, at timberline, adjacent tundra lacks the ability to exhibit the enhanced C storage of alpine tundra at higher elevations. Snowpack within trees and adjacent tundra at timberline may be relatively constant such that biophysical factors affecting soil characteristics are relatively unchanged by plant life-form.

Small mammal disturbance data for Martinelli slope, 1989 - 1992.

Permanent plots were established on the Martinelli slope in 1987. The 25 plots are organized in a Latin square design consisting of 5 rows and 5 columns. Plots are numbered according to row and column, beginning with 11 at the northwest corner of the grid. Plot 55 is located at the southeast corner of the grid. Each plot has dimensions of 1.5 m x 2.0 m. The corners of each plot are marked with rebar stakes. Each plot is divided into an evenly spaced grid consisting of 15 x 20 points on each side, for a total of 300 points, with each point situated 10 cm from its nearest neighbors. Small mammal disturbances were classified each year at each point where such disturbances occurred. The point-quadrat method used was similar to that described by Auerbach (1992): The point-quadrat method was used for estimating canopy stratification and plant cover. Aluminum point-quadrat frames were 3m^2 in size, with double-layer filament spaced 10 cm apart to make a 145 x 195 cm grid for a total of 300 sample points per plot. If small mammal disturbances were present at a point, those disturbances were classified as indicated in the comments section.

Topography: Slope - Ipswich Watershed - Idrisi Raster File.

This datalayer is part of a group of layers used for research in the Ipswich River Watershed. This is slope data for the study area. Taken from the source elevation tile data which was provided on the MassGIS website www.state.ma.us/mgis/massgis.htm in ESRI-format shapefile format and imported into IDRISI software using the ShapeIdr command. The resulting vector elevation files were converted to raster format using successive Lineras macro commands. This has the effect of mosaicing the tiles as well. The raster image was filtered once using a low-pass (mean) filter, then masked to the Ipswich study area parameters (extent). We then used the DEM to produce the slope model using the SURFACE module in IDRISI. This datalayer was produced as part of a research project concerning the Ipswich River Watershed.
