Development and validation of the Health Belief Model questionnaire to promote smoking cessation for nasopharyngeal cancer prevention: a cross-sectional study
<p>Objective: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) risk factors caused by lifestyle choices are substantial yet avoidable. Using the Health Belief Model as a conceptual framework, this study develops and validates a questionnaire to predict smokers' intentions to quit in Sarawak, Malaysia (HBM).</p> <p>Design: A cross sectional study.</p> <p>Setting: Urban and suburban areas in Sarawak, Malaysia.</p> <p>Participants: Following a thorough literature study, the preliminary items for the instrument were created. Prior to beginning the content validity by a panel of 10 experts, the instrument was translated into the Malay language utilising the forward-backwards approach. 10 smokers carried out face validity in both quantitative and qualitative ways. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to assess the instrument's concept validity. Phase 1 of the EFA involved 100 smokers, whereas phase 2 of the CFA involved 171 smokers. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were used to measure internal consistency and assess reliability.</p> <p>Results: The factor loading of each item remained within the acceptable threshold in the exploratory stage. The final revised CFA yielded the following model fit indices that suitably fitted the seven-factor model: Chi Square: 641.705; df= 500; P< 0.001; CFI = 0.953; TLI: 0.948; RMSEA= 0.041. With the exception of one pairwise construct, satisfactory convergent validity and divergent validity were demonstrated. Phases 1 and 2 both have Cronbach's alpha values over 0.7, suggesting acceptable internal reliability.</p> <p>Conclusions: The study confirmed the validity and reliability of the instrument in predicting smokers' tendency to adopt healthy behaviour of smoking cessation to lower risk of developing cancer. The instrument consists of 34 items, dividing into two sections: 6 HBM components and health behavioural intention. The instrument is regarded as innovation and can be applicable in other smoking-related malignancies in different susceptible populations and geographical locations.</p>
Data from: Smoke-driven changes in photosynthetically active radiation during the U.S. agricultural growing season
<p>Wildfire smoke is frequently present over the U.S. during the agricultural growing season and will likely increase with climate change. Studies of smoke impacts have largely focused on air quality and human health; however, understanding smoke's impact on photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is essential for predicting how smoke affects plant growth. We compare surface shortwave irradiance and diffuse fraction (DF) on smoke-impacted and smoke-free days from 2006-2020 using data from multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers at ten U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) UV-B Monitoring and Research Program stations and smoke plume locations from operational satellite products. On average, 20% of growing season days are smoke-impacted, but smoke prevalence increases over time (r = 0.60, p < 0.05). Smoke presence peaks in the mid- to late growing season (i.e., July, August), particularly over the northern Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, and Midwest. We find an increase in the distribution of PAR DF on smoke-impacted days, with larger increases at lower cloud fractions. On clear-sky days, daily average PAR DF increases by 10 percentage points when smoke is present. Spectral analysis of clear-sky days shows smoke increases DF (average: +45%) and decreases total irradiance (average: -6%) across all six wavelengths measured from 368-870 nm. Optical depth measurements from ground and satellite observations both indicate that spectral DF increases and total spectral irradiance decreases with increasing smoke plume optical depth. Our analysis provides a foundation for understanding smoke's impact on PAR, which carries implications for agricultural crop productivity under a changing climate.</p>
Raw Data for the article: Cigarette smoke promotes inflammasome-independent activation of caspase-1 and -4 leading to gasdermin D cleavage in human macrophages
<p>Mechanisms and consequences of gasdermin D (GSDMD) activation in cigarette smoke (CS)-associated inflammation and lung disease are unknown. GSDMD is a downstream effector of caspase-1, -8, and -4. Upon cleavage, GSDMD generates pores into cell membranes. Different degrees of GSDMD activation are associated with a range of physiological outputs ranging from cell hyperactivation to pyroptosis. We have previously reported that in human monocyte-derived macrophages CS extract (CSE) inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and shifts the response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) towards the TLR4-TRIF axis leading to activation of caspase-8, which, in turn, activates caspase-1. In the present work, we investigated whether other ASC-dependent inflammasomes could be involved in caspase activation by CSE and whether caspase activation led to GSDMD cleavage and other downstream effects. Presented results demonstrate that CSE promoted ASC-independent activation of caspase-1 leading to GSDMD cleavage and increased cell permeability, in the absence of cell death. GSDMD cleavage was strongly enhanced upon stimulation with LPS+CSE, suggesting a synergistic effect between the two stimuli. Noteworthy, CSE promoted LPS internalization leading to caspase-4 activation, thus contributing to increased GSDMD cleavage. Caspase-dependent GSDMD cleavage was associated with mitochondrial superoxide generation. Increased cleaved GSDMD was found in lung macrophages of smokers compared to ex-smokers and non-smoking controls. Our findings revealed that ASC-independent activation of caspase-1, -4, and -8 and GSDMD cleavage upon exposure to CS may contribute to macrophage dysfunction and feed the chronic inflammation observed in the smokers' lung.</p>
Development Gateway shisha study qualitative data: Understanding factors influencing Shisha smoking in Nigeria
<p>79 qualitative transcripts from semi-structured interviews conducted across 13 states in Nigeria with either six (for Adamawa, Anambra, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Kaduna, Kogi, Lagos, Oyo, Plateau and Rivers) or seven (Kano) qualitative transcripts per state. The transcripts are from a study exploring the following questions:</p> <ol> <li>What factors (demographic, social, cultural, behavioural, etc.) are associated with the use of shisha in Nigeria?</li> <li>What are the shisha use patterns and behaviours among those who use shisha in Nigeria?</li> </ol> <p>Respondents were self-reported current shisha users identified from public places that are known to provide spaces for use of shisha such as social clubs, night clubs, bars, pubs, cafes, and restaurants. Study participants had to be at least 18 years old to participate in the study.</p> <p>Topics covered in the interviews include respondent’s history of shisha smoking, perceived benefits from smoking shisha, awareness of health implications of smoking shisha, perceptions towards selected health risks of shisha smoking, use of sundry substances and other risky behaviours, and regulations Laws on shisha use in Nigeria.</p> <p>The data was collected between December 2021 and January 2022</p> <p>Also included with the dataset is the interview guide.</p> <p> </p>
Remote sensing of the light-obscuring smoke properties in real-scale fires using a photometric measurement method

Historic Smoking Pipe
This clay pipe was discovered by the Michigan Sate University Campus Archaeology field crew while conducting excavations along the banks of the Red Cedar River during the summer of 2018. The pipe is made of a high-fired clay with the letters/initials 'M' and 'T' embossed on the bowl on either side of the pipe stem. This indicates that the letters were pressed into the clay while it was still wet before it was fired in an oven. Clay pipes were the most popular during the 17th century, but then faced a decline. Popularity rose again during the 19th century and fell again during the 1930s due to the increasing use of cigarettes. This pipe likely dates to the mid-19th to early 20th century. Other clay pipes with more intricate decoration have been uncovered in previous CAP excavations. This model was created by CAP Fellow Jack A. Biggs using photogrammetry and Agisoft PhotoScan.
