Perceived and actual fighting ability: determinants of success via decision, knockout or submission in human combat sports

Animal contest theory assumes individuals to possess accurate information about their own fighting ability or resource holding potential (RHP) and, under some models, that of their opponent. However, due to the difficulty of disentangling perceived and actual RHP in animals, how accurately individuals are able to assess RHP remains relatively unknown. Furthermore, it is not just individuals within a fight that evaluate RHP. Third party observers evaluate the fight performance of conspecifics in order to make behavioural decisions. In human combat sports, when fights remain unresolved at the end of the allotted time, bystanders take a more active role, with judges assigning victory based on their assessment of each fighter's performance. Here, we use fight data from mixed martial arts in order to investigate whether perceived fighting performance (judges' decisions) and actual fighting success (fights ending in knock out or submission) are based on the same performance traits, specifically striking skill and vigour. Our results indicate that both performance traits are important for victory, but that vigour is more important for fights that resolve naturally. These results suggest that while similar traits are important for fighting success across the board, vigour is undervalued in judges' perceptions of RHP.

<p>In der vorliegenden Dokumentation sind die Skalen und Items zusammengestellt, welche in der vom Bundesamt f&uuml;r Sport (BASPO) gef&ouml;rderten Studie &laquo;Sport im Lebensraum Schule (SLS)&raquo; (01.09.2019&ndash;31.12.2021) verwendet wurden. Das Ziel dieser Studie, welche gemeinsam mit dem Sportamt der Stadt Z&uuml;rich durchgef&uuml;hrt wird, ist, die Tagesschulen bei der Entwicklung, Implementierung und Evaluation von sportorientierten ausserunterrichtlichen Angeboten, die auf die Bed&uuml;rfnisse der Sch&uuml;lerinnen und Sch&uuml;ler zugeschnitten sind, zu unterst&uuml;tzen. Zudem soll ein ad&auml;quates Aus- und Weiterbildungsangebot f&uuml;r Lehr- und Betreuungspersonen erarbeitet werden. Zu diesem Zweck werden an mehreren Schulen in der Stadt Z&uuml;rich, die sich in der Umgestaltung zur Tagesschule befinden, Schulleitungen, Lehr- und Betreuungspersonen sowie die Kinder befragt. Die Dokumentation der Skalen und Items umfasst die Variablennamen, den zugeh&ouml;rigen Fragetext und die Kodierung, sowie Quellen zu den einzelnen Fragen bzw. Items. Zudem sind zum Teil Skalen- bzw. Itemkennwerte aufgef&uuml;hrt. Diese Skalendokumentation beinhaltet die Skalen und Items des im Sommer 2020 eingesetzten Befragungsinstruments. Data from: Effective implementation of age restrictions increases selectivity of sport hunting of the African lion

1. Sport hunting of wildlife can play a role in conservation but can also drive population declines if not managed sustainably. Previous simulation modelling found that large felid species could theoretically be hunted sustainably by restricting harvests to older individuals that have likely reproduced. Several African countries currently use age-based hunting for lions although the outcomes have yet to be evaluated in a wild population. 2. Here we provide the first empirical evidence that a system of incentives sufficiently encouraged age-based hunting and reduced offtake of a wild felid, thereby reducing the potential risk of unsustainable hunting on a threatened species. We examined long-term hunting data and the lion population trend in Niassa National Reserve, Mozambique. 3. To incentivise hunter compliance, a 'points' system was developed which rewards operators that harvest lions older than the 6-year minimum trophy age recommended for sustainable hunting and penalises operators that hunt 'underage' lions (&lt;4 years). A key component of this system is the ecological application of key physical traits that predictably change with age in order to estimate (by hunters) and validate (by authorities) trophy individuals' ages pre- and post-mortem, respectively. Analysis of 138 lion hunts and 87 lion trophies from 2003-2015 revealed that after enforcement of age restrictions in 2006, hunters shifted harvests to suitably aged lions (&gt;6 years), from 25% of offtakes in 2004 to 100% by 2014. 4. Simultaneously, the number of lions and percentage of quota harvested decreased, resulting in lower lion offtakes. Following an initial decrease after enforcement of the aging system, the percentage of hunts harvesting lions stabilised, demonstrating that hunters successfully located and aged older lions. 5. Synthesis and applications. Evidence suggests that age restrictions combined with an incentive-based points system regulated sport hunting and reduced pressure on the lion population. We attribute the successful implementation of this management system to: 1) committed, consistent enforcement by management authorities, 2) genuine involvement of all stakeholders from the start, 3) annual auditing by an independent third party, 4) the reliable, transparent, straight-forward aging process, and 5) the simple, pragmatic points system for incentivising hunter compliance. Our study demonstrates that the use of age restrictions can increase the selectivity of sport hunting and lower trophy offtakes to reduce the possibility of unsustainable sport hunting negatively impacting species populations in the absence of reliable estimates of population size. It must be noted, however, that there was no measurable change in the lion numbers over the past decade that could be attributed to the implementation of this policy alone.

Data from: The demanding grey zone: sport indices by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging differentiate hypertrophic cardiomyopathy from athlete's heart

Background: We aimed to characterize gender specific left ventricular hypertrophy using a novel, accurate and less time demanding cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) quantification method to differentiate physiological hypertrophy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy based on a large population of highly trained athletes and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients. Methods and Results: Elite athletes (n=150,&gt;18 training hours/week), HCM patients (n=194) and athletes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (n=10) were examined by CMR. CMR based sport indices such as maximal end-diastolic wall thickness to left ventricular end-diastolic volume index ratio (EDWT/LVEDVi) and left ventricular mass to left ventricular end-diastolic volume ratio (LVM/LVEDV) were calculated, established using both conventional and threshold-based quantification method. Whereas 47.5% of male athletes, only 4.1% of female athletes were in the grey zone of hypertrophy (EDWT 13-16mm). EDWT/LVEDVi discriminated between physiological and pathological left ventricular hypertrophy with excellent diagnostic accuracy (AUCCQ:0.998, AUCTQ:0.999). Cut-off value for LVM/LVEDVCQ&lt;0.82 mm×m2/ml and for EDWT/LVEDViTQ&lt;1.27 discriminated between physiological and pathological left ventricular hypertrophy with a sensitivity of 77.8% and 89.2%, a specificity of 86.7% and 91.3%, respectively. LVM/LVEDV evaluated using threshold-based quantification performed significantly better than conventional quantification even in the male subgroup with EDWT between 13-16mm (p&lt;0.001). Conclusions: Almost 50% of male highly trained athletes can reach EDWT of 13 mm. CMR based sport indices provide an important tool to distinguish hypertrophic cardiomyopathy from athlete's heart, especially in highly trained athletes in the grey zone of hypertrophy.
