Arctic grayling neutral genomic microsatellite loci from the Kuparuk, the Sagavanirktok (primarily Oksrukuyik Creek) and the Itkillik (primarily the I-Minus outlet stream) watersheds, 2010-2014

Since 2009, The FISHSCAPE Project (National Science Foundation grants: 1719267, 1417754, and 0902153), based at Toolik Field Station, has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters within three watersheds: The Kuparuk (including Toolik Lake and Toolik outlet stream), The Sagavanirktok (primarily Oksrukuyik Creek, but also including sections of the Atigun River and Tea and Galbraith Lakes), and Itkillik (primarily the I-Minus outlet stream a tributary that that feeds into the Itkilik River). Goals of the FISHSCAPE project are to understand and predict the adaptability and persistence of a key Arctic species, the Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), to changing climate and hydrology. Research questions include: (1) Does landscape structure determine movement within and among watersheds; (2) do populations adapt to stream characteristics at local and regional scales; and (3) will the relative adaptability of populations determine their persistence under future climate change. We used genetics to investigate population structure and landscape genetics for Arctic grayling. Adult and young-of-the-year fish were captured at sampling locations and coordinates and/or specific station locations were noted. Fin clip samples (adults) or whole fish (young-of-the-year) were collected and preserved in 95% ethanol until Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products from neutral genomic microsatellite loci were scored and used to assess population genetic structure and other population parameters. Adult capture and movement data, including length, weight and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag information, can be found in a separate data package.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Stream water chemistry from 2001 to Present in the Caribou Poker Creek Research Watershed near Fairbanks, Alaska

The hydrogeochemistry of nine streams in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) during the summers of 2002-2006. In summer 2005, Boston Creek, which is located ca. 20 km east of the CPCRW was sampled. The Boston Creek watershed was extensively burned during the Boundary Fire of 2004. Samples were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Na, K, NH4+, Si, Cl, NO3, SO4, DOC, TDN, DIC, SUVA, pH and conductivity.

Indirect impacts of a novel wildfire on a well-studied desert stream: connectivity, carbon, and communities

In 2020 the Bush Fire burned approximately half of the Sycamore Creek watershed in central Arizona. Sycamore Creek has been subject to >40 years of research and the stream has been monitored by NEON since 2017. We studied the effects of fire on biogeochemistry of the stream and its watershed. We deployed autosamplers to monitor stream chemistry during storms on the mainstem and in ephemeral tributaries draining burned and unburned watersheds. The storm sampling program commenced nearly a year following the fire because absence of summer monsoon or winter storms in 2020-21 resulted in no flow in tributaries and intermittent flow in the mainstem. Water chemistry was measured during 14 monsoon storms of 2021 and winter frontal storms of 2021-22 with samples of baseflow collected in the mainstem during intervening periods. Water samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and major anions and cations. We also measured nutrient content of ash and chemistry of ash leachate as a potential source of solutes to stream biota.

Continuous precipitation and stream chemistry data, Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, 1963 – ongoing.

The Hubbard Brook Watershed Stream and Precipitation Chemistry Record is a dataset of chemical concentration data for precipitation and streamwater samples that have been collected weekly since the summer of 1963 from streams and precipitation gauges throughout the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, a research forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. HBWatER currently collects weekly samples from nine gauged watersheds, the mainstem of the Hubbard Brook into which each small stream drains, and two long-term precipitation collection sites. HBWatER was begun in the 1960's by Gene E. Likens, F. Herbert Bormann, Robert S. Pierce, and Noye M. Johnson who began collecting and analyzing stream and precipitation (rain and snow). They had a simple idea, that by comparing watershed inputs in rain and snow to watershed outputs from streams, they could measure the behavior of entire ecosystems in response to atmospheric pollution or forestry practices. Stream and precipitation samples have been collected every week from 1963 to the present day. Insights gained from studying this long-term chemical record led to the discovery of acid rain in North America and have documented the effectiveness of federal clean air legislation in reducing coalfired power plant emissions. The collection and analysis of HBWatER samples is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and Jeff Merriam (USFS) and the dataset is curated and maintained by a team of researchers: Chris Solomon (Cary IES), Emily Bernhardt (Duke), Bill McDowell (UNH), Charley Driscoll (Syracuse U.), Keith Nislow (USFS), and Mark Green (Case Western). Current Financial Support for HBWatER is provided by NSF LTREB # 2401760 and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology Record: Algal Biomass (Chlorophyll-a), 2018 - ongoing

The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology record is a companion dataset to the Hubbard Brook Watershed Stream and Precipitation Chemistry record. The Stream Ecology record started in 2018 and HBWatER collects ecological samples from seven gauged watersheds: Watersheds 1 through 6 and Watershed 9. HBWatER measures algal biomass, aquatic invertebrate emergence, and stream decomposition by measuring (1) chlorophyll-a on tiles and artificial moss, which approximate algal biomass growth on bare rock and bryophyte mats, (2) preserved algal biomass on artificial moss substrates in Lugol’s Iodine solution, (3) aquatic invertebrate emergence on replicate sticky traps placed above the stream, and (4) stream decomposition through leaf litter pack and cotton strip decay. To complement these ecological records, HBWaTER installed light sensors and field cameras to obtain better information about the light and stream environment daily. Three replicate light sensors that take sub-daily measurements of light level intensity are placed at each watershed at the weir pond (full-sun), and two under the canopy (partial shade). Field cameras take daily photos at noon of the stream canopy and the stream channel. While many studies at Hubbard Brook have measured algal biomass, aquatic invertebrates, and stream decomposition, they are scattered in locations across the valley, were performed at non-continuous times, and use various semi-comparable methods. The HBWatER Stream Ecology record was created to address this gap and systematically measure any long-term changes in the organisms living in the stream. The collection of HBWatER samples is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and analyses of these samples has been performed by Heather Malcom (Cary IES), Audrey Thellman (Duke), Steve Anderson (Duke), Geoff Wilson (Cary IES), and Adam Rok (Duke). AGW04 Measurement of stream chemical properties during growing season rainfall events at konza prairie, 2024

During the 2024 growing season, stream water chemical properties were measured during seven rainfall events in watersheds N01B, N02B, and N04D at Konza Prairie Biological Station. Just before and during the storms, stream water samples were collected hourly using automated samplers located just upstream or downstream from theflume in each watershed. At the same location, stream pH and temperature was also measured every 5 minutes using data loggers situated near the stream sampler inlet tubes. Following each storm, the samples were filtered through 0.45 µm filter membranesand then analyzed for concentrations of alkalinity, major cations and anions, non-purgeable organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, and water stable isotopes. Select trace element concentrations and strontium isotope ratios were also analyzed during one of the storm events. The primary goal was to assess event-level variation in stream concentration-discharge relationships in watersheds with variable extents of woody plant encroachment. Chemical profiles of Crescent Stream, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2021-2023).

This data package contains chemical profiles (anions, cations, nutrients, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) from water samples collected during the austral summers of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 in Crescent Stream, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Samples were collected from the F8 gage and from the east and west branches of Crescent Stream, just above their confluence. Grab samples were analyzed according to the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER core stream chemistry protocols. In December 2021, permafrost degradation was observed along the banks of the west branch, with a prior degradation event documented at the same location in January 2012. This data package supports a pending publication by Wright et al., examining the impacts of permafrost degradation on stream chemistry.

Summary statistics and annual trends in chloride concentration in urban Minnesota lakes and streams

These data tables describe statistical summaries of chloride concentration, temporal trends in annual chloride, and projected risk of future chloride pollution in lakes and streams of the 17 most urban counties in Minnesota. Data were summarized separately for lakes and for streams, and include statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, upper and lower confidence intervals, and maximum) over the entire data record, over the warm season (May - October), and over the most recent 5 years (i.e., since 2018). Trends were computed on annual means and medians. For lakes, data were aggregated by lake basin (MN DNR Lake ID, or DOW) as well as by depth of sample (surface and deep). For streams, data were aggregated by individual site level as well as by stream reach (per MN Pollution Control Agency assessment units). Risk of chloride pollution was also determined for sites with longer records (10+ years) based on current concentration, number of exceedances of chronic standards, and projected chloride concentration based on current trends. Raw data were extracted from two sources: (1) the National Water Quality Portal (USGS & EPA) and (2) the Metropolitan Council Environmental Information Management System. The data were originally collected by a large number of entities, including watershed management authorities in the state of Minnesota, tribal groups, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, municipalities, university researchers, private consultants, and the Metropolitan Council. Some data records begin as early as the 1950's or 1960's, with many sites still including active data collection. A total of approximately 45,000 observations of chloride were included for lakes and wetlands, and approximately 70,000 observations for streams. Nearly 1600 stream sites and 700 lake/wetland sites were represented in the raw data, with 356 stream sites and 600 lakes represented in the summaries (after filtering out sites with less than 1 year of data collection). A Global database of methane concentrations and atmospheric fluxes for streams and rivers

This dataset, referred to as MethDB, is a collation of publicly available values of methane (CH4) concentrations and atmospheric fluxes for world streams and rivers, along with supporting information on location, geographic, physical, and chemical conditions of the study sites. The data set is composed of four linked tables, corresponding to the data sources (Papers_MethDB), the study sites (Sites_MethDB), concentrations (Concentrations_MethDB), and influx/efflux rates (Fluxes_MethDB). Information was extracted from journal articles, government reports, book chapters, and similar sources that were acquired before 15 September 2015. Concentrations and fluxes were converted to a standard unit (micromoles per liter for concentration and millimoles per square meter per day for flux) and both the author-reported and converted data are included in the database. MethDB was assembled as part of a larger synthesis effort on stream and river CH4 dynamics, and assembled data were used to identify large-scale patterns and potential drivers of fluvial CH4 and to generate an updated global-scale estimate of CH4 emissions from world rivers.

STREAM - Sub-THz Radar sensing of the Environment for future Autonomous Marine platforms: Multi-Perspective Sensing - Maritime Environment - Side-looking Perspective

<p>This dataset contains the files corresponding to which results have been included in the journal paper titled 'High-Resolution Multi-Modal Sensing of&nbsp;Distributed Radar Network'. The full description of the conducted trials and data structure is mentioned in the attached PDF document.</p> <p>The trials were conducted at the Gosport Marina, Portsmouth, UK with a sea state of approximately 3 according to the Douglas Scale.</p> <p>The experiments were performed with automotive radars operating in the 79 GHz band to investigate the Doppler and imaging capabilities of these radars. A multi-sensory suite distributed around Valkyrie VI was mounted in front, corner, side and backward-looking orientations.</p> <p>This dataset contains data from the side-looking orientation, where the installation angle of radar is 90 degrees respective to the platform velocity vector.</p> <p><strong>Radar Data:</strong></p> <p>The&nbsp;radar data is stored in the file 'GM2_Out1_240522_160925.h5'. The methodology to process the data in MATLAB is presented in the attached pdf. document.</p> <p><strong>Inertial Measurement Unit:</strong></p> <p>Three xSens 680G IMU were mounted on the roof, front and back of the boat.
