Groundwater levels and temperature in coastal tundra adjacent to Simpson Lagoon, Alaska, 2022

The coastal tundra adjacent to Simpson Lagoon, along Alaska's Beaufort Sea coast, was visited in July and September/October 2022 to assess coastal groundwater dynamics along the lagoon. Groundwater levels were monitored in five piezometers aligned in a transect oriented perpendicular to Simpson Lagoon, as well as surface water levels in the lagoon. Loggers were deployed on July 22, 2022, and collected on September 29, 2022. Data include surface water and groundwater elevation data from July 22, 2022, to September 29, 2022, with the elevation relative to a local datum. All levels have been corrected for barometric pressure (see methods). Also included is groundwater temperature data from the well closest to the lagoon (Well 5).

Urban Heat and Desert Wildlife: Rodent Body Condition Across a Gradient of Surface Temperatures in the greater Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area (2019-2020)

We live-trapped wild rodents from seven field sites spanning three strata of land-surface temperatures in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area. We captured 116 adult pocket mice (Chaetodipus spp. and Perognathus spp.) and Merriam’s kangaroo rats (Dipodomys merriami) during 2019 and 2020 from mountainous urban parks and open spaces. Animal body condition was quantified as percent body fat (i.e., fat mass divided by body mass). We used a noninvasive quantitative magnetic resonance instrument to measure body condition.

Daily porewater salinity, conductivity, and temperature measurements from the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) Project

The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) is a large-scale field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. Six porewater well samples were collected four days per week from six treatment plots using a peristalsis pump. Salinity and conductivity were measured from the samples using a handheld conductivity/salinity meter. In addition, water delivery treatments were conducted four days per week after porewater samples were collected.

Sapwood Temperatures in Hemlock Trees at Harvard Forest HEM Tower 1997-1998

Sapwood temperatures in four large hemlocks, 130-200 years old and about 40 to 90 cm basal diameter and 25 to 29 m tall, were measured in order to estimate sapwood respiration in these trees as part of a physiological model for hemlock forest carbon exchange. As expected, sapwood temperature varied most in small branches and least in the main bole of the tree near the ground. An additional finding from these measurements is that sapwood begins to freeze at -1 to -2 degrees C, as shown by a stabilization and in some cases an increase of about 1 degree C in sapwood temperature when air temperature cooled continuously to below this temperature range.

Aggregated 30-minute soil water and temperature data from 9 NPP shrub sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 2013 - 2024 (for Pinos et al 2025 manuscript)

This is an aggregated dataset of 30-minute soil temperature and moisture data from 9 shrub-dominated NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Collection of soil volumetric water content data at all of the 15 Jornada LTER NPP sites, New Mexico, supports the environmental monitoring objectives of the Jornada LTER monitoring program that look at plant-soil water dynamics. Volumetric water content and soil temperature are measured every 30 minutes at an automated meteorological station installed at all 15 of the Jornada LTER program’s NPP sites. This dataset aggregates only the stations located at the 9 sites with shrub-dominated vegetation cover (creosotebush, tarbush, and mesquite dune sites). Measurements are made every 30 minutes at 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm soil depths. This dataset is in support of the Pinos et al. 2025 manuscript.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: salinity, temperature and current at CTD and ADCP mooring FOR04 from 2004 ongoing

Moored and bottom-mounted instrumentation (ADCP, CTD, thermistors, wave-tide meters) sampled year-round on the reef of Moorea Island, French Polynesia at LTER 4 fore reef site (FOR04). Sampling began in 2005. All data have been interpolated onto a 20 min grid. ADCP data are organized into 1-meter bins, measured as height from the bottom, to a maximum of 20 bins. All bins may not be filled, and although post-processing attempted to exclude data from bins 'above the surface', users need to exercise caution with the near-surface bins. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, and Density. The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom, and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. Note that the upper CTD and temperature thermistor data were terminated in January 2020. Bottom CTD was terminated July 2021. There are 2 bottom mounted thermistors in the vicinity of the mooring at 10 and 20 meter depth. A bottom-mounted wave-tide meter provides a measure of significant wave height and dominant wave period at a 2-hour sampling interval. Tide-related data may be calculated from bottom-mounted pressure sensor data.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Water Temperature Data - Trout Lake Buoy2 - ADCP 2005 - 2006

This instrumented buoy on Trout Lake is equipped with a thermistor chain that measures water temperature from depths placed every 0.5-1m from the surface through 13m. The Trout Lake buoy is also equipped with meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure and weather conditions. An acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is associated with this buoy. Data are usually collected every 10 minutes with occasional periods of 2 minute data for short periods to answer specific questions. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Sampling Frequency: varies for instantaneous sample. averaged to hourly and daily values from one minute samples Number of sites: 1

During the months July through September, 2004, water temperature profiles were measured. For the months, June through August, 2006, sediment temperatures were measured along with the water temperature profiles. North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Water Temperature Data - Sparkling Bog North Buoy 2008 - 2012

The instrumented buoy on Sparkling Bog North is equipped with a thermistor chain that measures water temperature at the surface, at 0.25 m and at every .5 m from 0.5 m to 4.5 m. The buoy is also equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, meteorological sensors, a CO2 sensor and a YSI AutoProfiler that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, and lake metabolism. Prior to May 2009, data were collected at 1 minute or 10 minute intervals. Since May 2009, data are being collected each minute. Hourly and daily water temperature averages are computed from high resolution data. Hourly and daily values may not be current with high resolution data. In 2008, the instrumented buoy was deployed in Sparkling Bog North from March 24 to November 10. In 2009, the buoy was deployed on the ice on March 7 and was not removed for the winter of 2009 to 2010. Sampling Frequency: varies for instantaneous sample. Generally 1 minute or 10 minutes.
