Participatory Design of Usability Requirements for Access Control in an Evolutionary-Teal Organization Workshop Data Set
<p>In order to enable members of a socio-technical evolutionary-teal organization to design the technical component for access control, we conducted a workshop that structures the requirement engineering with members. The workshop aims to illustrate user needs, challenges and potential solutions that can be used to infer usability requirements for the development of a prototype of the user interface for access control in the form of "problem statements" and clustered mind-maps.</p> <p>The workshop is setup as a standalone, five-and-a-half-hour group discussion. It uses the methods of Design Thinking and Participatory Design.<br> The workshop has been recorded in video and this data set contains a textual German transcript and transcripts of the moderation cards that have been created during the workshop for various guiding topics.</p> <p>We hope that the material can be used to (a) comprehend the interpretation used in our qualitative research, (b) to adapt the workshop model by other volunteers of our case study Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. (<a href="https://www.vivaconagua.org/">https://www.vivaconagua.org/</a>), and (c) investigate other interesting research questions.</p> <p>Some material, such as timetables and storyboard, has been omitted in the publication due to privacy restrictions.</p>

Data from: Past distribution of epiphyllous liverworts in China: the usability of historical data
Epiphyllous liverworts form a special group of bryophytes that primarily grow on the leaves of understory vascular plants in tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests. Being sensitive to moisture and temperature changes, epiphyllous liverworts are often consider to be good indicators of climate change and forest degradation. However, they are a poorly collected and taxonomically complicated group, with an only partly identified distribution pattern. In this study, we built four models based on 24 environmental variables at four different spatial resolutions (i.e., 1 km, 5 km, 10 km, and 15 km) to predict the past distribution of epiphyllous liverworts in China, using Maxent model and 63 historical location records (i.e., presence-only data). Both area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) and true skill statistic (TSS) methods are used to assess the model performance. Results showed that the model with the predictors at a 15-km resolution achieved the highest predictive accuracy (AUC=0.946; TSS=0.880), although there was no statistically significant difference between the four models (p > 0.05). The most significant environmental variables included aridity, annual precipitation, precipitation of wettest month, precipitation of wettest quarter, precipitation of warmest quarter, annual mean NDVI, and minimum NDVI. The predicted suitable areas for epiphyllous liverworts were mainly located in the south of Yangtze River and seldom exceeds 35° N, which were consistent with the museum and herbarium records, as well as the historical records in scientific literatures. Our study further demonstrated the value of historical data to ecological and evolutionary studies.

Usability, Acceptability, User Experience, Human-Device Interaction, and Ergonomics in Two Mobile FES-Cycling Systems for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury
<p>This database originates from a study comparing two FES-cycling systems: the <strong>commercial BerkelBike Pro</strong> and a <strong>recumbent FES-bike prototype</strong> developed by the team at Politecnico di Milano. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the <strong>usability</strong>, <strong>acceptability</strong>, <strong>user experience</strong>, <strong>human-device interaction</strong>, and <strong>ergonomics</strong> of these two devices for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI).</p> <p>The study involved 15 participants with SCI, covering a wide range of ages (18 to 65 years) and injury types (both complete and incomplete, at acute and chronic phases). Each participant underwent three sessions with both FES-cycling devices:</p> <ul> <li><strong>First session</strong>: Dedicated to setting up the system for each participant. For both the BerkelBike Pro and the FES-bike prototype, the system settings were tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring optimal comfort and function.</li> <li><strong>Second and third sessions</strong>: Focused on actual training, where participants used the devices to engage in cycling activities.</li> </ul> <p>At the end of the <strong>third session</strong>, participants completed a series of questionnaires to assess the usability, acceptability, user experience, and ergonomics of both devices. These questionnaires form the core of the study’s data collection and are central to understanding participants' interactions with the FES-cycling systems.</p> <p>The database is organized as follows:</p> <ol> <li><strong>Demographic data</strong>: The first page contains demographic information, including participants' age, gender, height, weight, time after injury, injury type (ASIA grade), and injury level.</li> <li><strong>PGWBI scores</strong>: The second page includes baseline data collected using the <strong>Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI)</strong>, which assesses the participants' emotional and psychological state before engaging with the devices. The PGWBI consists of 22 questions grouped into 6 items: "anxiety", "depression", "positivity", "self-control", "health" and "vitality”. The responses are assessed on a 6-point scale ranging from 0 to 5. The score contributions for each question are then added together and transformed to achieve the final score that can range from 0 to 110.</li> <li><strong>SUS scores</strong>: The third page contains the results from the <strong>System Usability Scale (SUS)</strong>, a standard 10-item questionnaire that evaluates the usability of each FES-cycling system based on user ratings. The SUS is evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale, where 1 corresponds to strongly disagree, while 5 to strongly agree. The score contributions for each question are then added together and multiplied by 2.5 to achieve the final score that can range from 0 to 100, where higher scores indicate better usability.</li> <li><strong>TAM-3 scores</strong>: The fourth page presents data from the <strong>Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM-3)</strong>, which measures how participants perceive the ease of use and the usefulness of the devices. . The TAM-3 consists of 50 questions grouped into 14 items. These items include “perceived usefulness”, “perceived ease of use”, “self-efficacy”, “perception of external control”, “playfulness”, “anxiety”, “enjoyment”, “subjective norm”, “voluntariness”, “image”, “relevance”, “output quality”, “result demonstrability” and “behavioral intention”. The items are investigated using a 7-point Likert scale, where 1 corresponds to strongly disagree, while 7 to strongly agree.</li> <li><strong>UEQ scores</strong>: The fifth page includes responses from the <strong>User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ)</strong>, evaluating participants' experience with the devices. The UEQ consists of 26 questions grouped in six items: “attractiveness”, “perspicuity”, “efficiency”, “dependability”, “stimulation” and “novelty”. Questions are scored using a 7-point Likert scale, where 1 corresponds to strongly disagree, while 7 to strongly agree. Then scores per item are transformed using a scale ranging from -3 to +3, with +3 representing the most positive value (extremely good) and -3 the most negative one (horribly bad). Values between -0.8 and 0.8 represent a neutral evaluation of the corresponding scale, values > 0.8 represent a positive evaluation and values < -0.8 represent a negative one.</li> <li><strong>Custom questionnaire scores</strong>: The sixth page contains data from a <strong>custom-designed questionnaire</strong>, created specifically for this study to assess the ergonomics of the two FES-cycling systems, with particular attention to human-device interaction at both the physical and psychological levels. It consists of 12 questions covering four items: the transfer from/to the bikes and the initial tuning, bike comfort, its accessibility, and the ease of interaction. Dataset of Usability and Acceptance of Alboom: A Crowd-Based Early Warning System for Harmful Algal Blooms
<p>Alboom is a crowd-based smartphone application and database system to record, store, analyze, share, and provide early warning information regarding harmful algal blooms (HABs). Similar to other participatory-based applications, the willingness of community members to be actively involved is paramount to the success of the application implementation. The dataset is the investigation results of usability and acceptance of Alboom. The questionnaires were built using an augmented technology acceptance model (TAM) to identify factors that affect the continual use intention of the application. In addition to the native TAM variables, such as perceived ease of use and usefulness as well as attitude, other factors, including HAB awareness, social influence, and reward, were also studied. Furthermore, the usability factor was also examined, specifically using the System Usability Scale (SUS) approach.</p>

Systematic review of marine environmental DNA metabarcoding studies: Toward best practices for data usability and accessibility
<p>The emerging field of environmental DNA (eDNA) research lacks universal guidelines for ensuring data produced are FAIR–findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable–despite growing awareness of the importance of such practices. In order to better understand these data usability challenges, we systematically reviewed 60 peer-reviewed articles conducting a specific subset of eDNA research: metabarcoding studies in marine environments. For each article, we characterized approximately 90 features across several categories: general article attributes and topics, methodological choices, types of metadata included, and availability and storage of sequence data. Analyzing these characteristics, we identified several barriers to data accessibility, including a lack of common context and vocabulary across the articles, missing metadata, supplementary information limitations, and a concentration of both sample collection and analysis in the United States. While some of these barriers require significant effort to address, we also found many instances where small choices made by authors and journals could have an outsized influence on the discoverability and reusability of data. Promisingly, articles also showed consistency and creativity in data storage choices as well as a strong trend toward open access publishing. Our analysis underscores the need to think critically about data accessibility and usability as marine eDNA metabarcoding studies, and eDNA projects more broadly, continue to proliferate.</p>
IMPROVING THE AVAILABILITY AND USABILITY OF PLANETARY SPATIAL DATA RESEARCH BY SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE OF CELESTIAL BODIES MODELING
<p>The rapid development of space technology and the increased interest in space exploration have resulted in the intensifying of observation of celestial bodies, mostly in the solar system, over the past decade with the prospect of an upward trend in the future. Data collected by space missions are stored and provided to users for use through the archives of individual space agencies and specialized portals of space missions. Users often encounter many problems when searching and retrieving data of interest, despite the fact that access to data is open for all groups of users. Current ways of storing and shearing this valuable data set are focused on their long-term archiving and are largely adapted for space scientists with inadequate access and search functionalities that do not meet the needs of a wider group of users. To search for data, users must have some prior knowledge and invest a lot of time and effort, and the available functionalities gives too many of the same or similar data filtering results that, in most cases, cannot be visualized before downloading. For this reason, the data remains unused, and in order to solve this problem, large amounts of collected data on space bodies, of which most are spatially defined, impose the need to develop the spatial data infrastructure of celestial bodies (SDICB) at the general level in order to enable standardized organization and storage of these data, and their efficient use and exchange. In order to approach to the development of such an infrastructure, it is necessary to investigate what data, as well as how and to what extent, are collected through the space observation, either from Earth, Earth orbit or from space probes. It is also necessary to investigate how this data can be obtained and to explore concepts of spatial data infrastructure, the possibilities of its establishment and operationalization. This doctoral dissertation provides a detailed overview of current ways of storing and distributing space research data and their shortcomings and explores the possibility of modeling the establishment of SDICB. In order to adequately approach the development of the model, user needs assessment and analysis of the current data archiving situation was conducted. These results served as input parameters for modeling SDICB and the adoption of guidelines (recommendations) for the establishment. The proposed model is focused on user needs and improving the functionality of data access by applying international standards of spatial data and open-source technologies to make space data available to the general public and enable their easy search, download and interpretation. For the proposed model, an implementation project with a five-year implementation period was created, for which a feasibility study was conducted, and the benefits of SDICB implementation for all involved stakeholders were investigated.</p>
Lightweight usable cryptography: a usability evaluation of the Ascon 1.2 family
<p>We present a usability study of the Ascon 1.2 family of cryptographic algorithms. As far as we know, this is the first published experimental evaluation aimed at a cryptographic design (i.e. not a specific API) with the purpose of informing which aspects to standardise. While the results show the general difficulty of choosing and applying cryptographic algorithms, there are some more specific insights. These include the possibility of confusing multiple variants, the relevance of small interfaces, and the desire for higher-level wrapper functions (e.g. for protocols). Overall, many questions are still open, including how usability could be integrated into the design and evaluation of cryptographic algorithms. Our main takeaway is that lightweight usable cryptography is an open research area that deserves greater focus. For the review of NISTIR 7977, the standardisation process of Ascon as a FIPS, and when exploring potential future SPs, the key criterion of usability should be based on realistic user testing and on triangulation from other methods.</p>
