Vocal communication is tied to interpersonal arousal coupling in caregiver-infant dyads

<p>It has been argued that a necessary condition for the emergence of speech in humans is the ability to vocalize irrespectively of underlying affective states, but when and how this happens during development remains unclear. To examine this, we used wearable microphones and autonomic sensors to collect multimodal naturalistic datasets from 12-month-olds and their caregivers. We observed that, across the day, clusters of vocalisations occur during elevated infant and caregiver arousal. This relationship is stronger in infants than caregivers: caregivers' vocalizations show greater decoupling with their own states of arousal, and their vocal production is more influenced by the infant's arousal than their own. Different types of vocalisation elicit different patterns of change across the dyad. Cries occur following reduced infant arousal stability and lead to increased child-caregiver arousal coupling, and decreased infant arousal. Speech-like vocalisations also occur at elevated arousal, but lead to longer-lasting increases in arousal, and elicit more parental verbal responses. Our results suggest that:  12-month-old infants' vocalisations are strongly contingent on their arousal state (for both cries and speech-like vocalisations), whereas adults' vocalisations are more flexibly tied to their own arousal; that cries and speech-like vocalisations alter the intra-dyadic dynamics of arousal in different ways, which may be an important factor driving speech development; and that this selection mechanism which drives vocal development is anchored in our stress physiology.</p>

Cultural atlas of vocal variation in the yellow-naped amazon parrot

<p class="MsoNormal">Vocal dialects are a taxonomically widespread phenomenon, which are usually studied in a restricted portion of a species' range. It is unclear whether geographic patterns observed in one part of a species' range can be inferred as typical across the range or whether local conditions influence the presence or absence of dialects. We examined the yellow-naped amazon, <em>Amazona auropalliata</em>, a parrot species with remarkable vocal learning capabilities. Although this species is native to Mesoamerica, only Costa Rican populations have been evaluated long-term. Previous studies have shown that these populations exhibit geographically and temporally stable vocal dialect patterns. Without data on populations outside of Costa Rica, it is impossible to know if vocal dialects are present in northern range populations, and whether or not they exhibit similar geographic structure to southern range populations. We recorded yellow-naped amazon contact calls at 47 different sites across the range between 2016 and 2019 and evaluated them for the presence of dialects. We visually classified 14 contact call types based on spectrographic similarity and used spectrographic cross-correlation, principal component analysis, and Mantel-based spatial autocorrelations to assess acoustic similarity. The results from our study show that the vocal patterns previously seen in Costa Rica are also present in northern range populations, supporting our hypothesis. Call types were regionally specific (e.g., vocal dialects) across the range, and no call types were repeated across multiple regions. We did, however, observe distinctive structural characteristics that are found in multiple call types, suggesting that different call types stem from a common origin. Vocal dialect in this species is likely maintained through a tendency toward philopatry and matching call types to enhance social identification.</p>

Data from: Songbird species that display more-complex vocal learning are better problem-solvers and have larger brains

<p>Complex vocal learning, a critical component of human spoken language, has been assumed to be associated with more-advanced cognitive abilities. Tests of this hypothesis between individuals within a species have been inconclusive and have not been done across species. In this work, we measured an array of cognitive skills - namely problem-solving, associative and reversal learning, and self-control - across 214 individuals of 23 bird species, including 19 wild-caught songbird species and two vocal nonlearning species. We found that the greater the vocal learning abilities of a species, the better their problem-solving skills and the relatively larger their brains. These conclusions held when controlling for non-cognitive variables and phylogeny. Our results support a hypothesis of shared genetic and cognitive mechanisms between vocal learning, problem-solving, and bigger brains in songbirds.</p>

African elephant rumbles differ between populations and sympatric social groups: possible consequences of vocal learning?

<p>Vocal production learning, the ability to modify vocalizations in response to sounds made by others, was a critical prerequisite for the evolution of human speech but is rare among mammals. Elephants have exhibited this ability in captivity, yet its function in wild elephants remains unknown. Female African savannah elephants (<em>Loxodonta</em> <em>africana</em>) live in large societies with nested tiers of association in which vocal signatures of group identity could facilitate recognition of distant social affiliates. Vocal production learning allows the formation of such group signatures in many species and can also cause vocal differentiation between populations. However, the existence of vocal signatures of social group or population in elephants was unexplored. We recorded multiple social groups of wild elephants in two Kenyan populations (Samburu and Amboseli) and used random forest models to determine if calls could be assigned to individual callers, family groups, bond groups (collections of family groups), or populations based on acoustic structure. Calls were assigned by a random forest model to individual callers and populations with better-than-chance accuracy, demonstrating population-level divergence in vocalization structure. While random forest models failed to accurately assign calls to family or bond group, calls from the same family or bond group were significantly more similar (higher proximity scores) than calls from different groups, suggesting the existence of group signatures as well. We discuss possible drivers of this differentiation and argue that vocal learning is the most likely explanation for population- and group-level variation in elephants. The existence of group signatures suggests recognition of large numbers of individuals as a possible adaptive function for vocal production learning in elephants.</p>
