Data Graphs | Public Engagement with Science: A Survey for India Alliance Grantees
<p>Lately, the Indian research ecosystem has seen an upward trend in scientists showing interest in communicating their science and engaging with non-scientific audiences; however, the number and variety of science communication or public engagement activities undertaken formally by scientists remains low in the country. There could be many contributing factors for this trend. To explore this further, the science funding public charity in India, DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance (India Alliance), in a first of its kind of study by a funding agency in India, surveyed its 243 research grantees in November 2020 requesting their views on public engagement with science in India through an online survey. The survey included both quantitative as well as open-ended questions to assess the understanding of, participation in, and attitude of India Alliance Fellows/Grantees towards public engagement with research, identify the enablers, challenges, and barriers to public engagement for India Alliance Fellows/Grantees, understand the specific needs (training/capacity-building, funding, etc.) and develop recommendations for India Alliance as well as for the larger scientific ecosystem in the country. The survey showed that India Alliance grantees are largely motivated to engage with the public about science or their research but lack professional recognition and incentives, training and structural support to undertake public engagement activities.</p> <p>A shareable survey was designed using Microsoft Forms. The survey employed a mixed methods strategy and included 24 closed-ended questions (multiple choice and Likert scale) and nine qualitative questions, similar to open-ended questions. The questions were modelled on a similar survey carried out by Wellcome in 2016 to gather views of researchers on public engagement in Asia and Africa.</p> <p>The survey was shared by email with 243 Indian researchers in receipt of India Alliance fellowships or grants, out of which 137 (male – 78; female – 59) responded to the survey. Of these, 90 respondents were basic science researchers, 22 were clinical researchers, and 25 were public health researchers. A majority, i.e. 81% of the respondents indicated working as an independent researcher for more than 4 years (time post-PhD). Furthermore, 58% of the respondents were based at research institutions, 18% at higher education institutions, and 17% at central, state and private universities; these organisations geographically represent around 31 cities of India (9 respondents chose to not reveal their host institution in the survey). Periodic reminders were sent by email to the fellows to complete the survey. Three fellows who received funding from India Alliance for their public engagement projects were contacted via email after the survey for their views (in 50-150 words) on the public engagement funding programme of India Alliance. They were informed that their input is intended to be included in a report of the survey results, and they can choose to either stay anonymous or be credited. The data was collected from 27 November 2020 until 28 April 2021.</p> <p>Following the end of the survey, the data automatically mapped on Microsoft Excel was cleaned for duplication and errors. Microsoft Excel tools were used to analyse and visualise the data.</p> <p>The study did not undergo a formal ethical clearance process as the primary objective of the study was to gather insights of grantees to inform India Alliance’s public engagement support mechanisms. At the start of the survey, the objectives of the survey were clearly stated and the respondents were informed that the anonymized data of the survey may be communicated in the future. Participation in the survey was entirely voluntary.</p>

MapOSR - A Mapping Review Dataset of Empirical Studies on Open Science
<p>Research that investigates respective researchers’ engagement in Open Science varies widely in the topics addressed, methods employed, and disciplines investigated, which makes it difficult to integrate and compare its results. To investigate current outcomes of Open Science research, and to get a better understanding on topicswell-researched and on research gaps we aim at providing an openly accessible overview of empirical studies that focus on different aspects of Open Science in different scientific disciplines, academic groups and geographical regions. The present data set of studies about Open Science practices was retrieved following a PRISM approach to compile a literature review. We include studies from the Scopus and Web of Science databases with keywords relating to Open Science between the years 2000 and 2020, as well as a snowball search for relevant articles. Studies that did not investigate any aspect of Open Science, or weren’t peer reviewed were excluded, resulting in a total of 695 remaining studies. The data set was collaboratively annotated to ensure intercoder reliability of the coded data.</p>
Data for: Citizen science as an ecosystem of engagement: Implications for learning and broadening participation
<p>The bulk of research on citizen science participants is project-centric, based on an assumption that volunteers experience a single project. Contrary to this assumption, survey responses (n=3,894) and digital trace data (n=3,649) from volunteers, who collectively engaged in 1,126 unique projects, revealed that multi-project participation was the norm. Only 23% of volunteers were singletons (who participated in only one project), and multi-project participants split evenly between disciplines specialists (39%) and discipline spanners (38% joined projects with different disciplinary topics), and unevenly between mode specialists (67%) and mode spanners (33% participated in online and offline projects). Public engagement was narrow: multi-project participants were eight times more likely to be white, and five times more likely to hold advanced degrees, than the general population. We propose a volunteer-centric framework that explores how the dynamic accumulation of experiences in a project ecosystem can support broad learning objectives and inclusive citizen science. </p>

Natural history and community science records confirm rapid geographic shifts in the distribution of Bachman's Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis) since 1850
<p>North American grassland birds colonized emerging habitat created by expanding agriculture in a pattern of eastward expansions from the mid-1800s to mid-1900s. These birds have been declining, since at least the mid1900s, largely as result of anthropogenic landscape change. Only one bird that now breeds predominantly in southeastern pine savannas is thought to have experienced a concurrent range expansion into this region: <em>Peucaea aestivalis </em>(Bachman's Sparrow). However, our understanding of the <em>P. aestivalis</em> expansion, and subsequent retraction to the southeastern United States, is largely based on a contemporaneous review of only a subset of historical records from beyond its modern, northern limit. We suggest an alternative explanation for these historical records is that <em>P. aestivalis</em> historically occurred more broadly than was recognized in contemporaneous literature. To evaluate these hypotheses, we reviewed field observations from literature, natural history collections, and eBird to show how <em>P. aestivalis </em>presence throughout eastern North America has shifted since the mid-1800s. To confirm that these findings were not the result of detection bias, we repeated our analysis on a common sparrow species (<em>Spizella pusilla</em>) with a largely overlapping breeding range, but no history of expansion and retraction. We confirm that <em>P. aestivalis</em> expanded its range, but add that prior to that expansion, its historical distribution was broader than commonly acknowledged today. As a result, we identify the northwestern historical limit of <em>P. aestivalis</em>, the Ouachita and Ozark highlands, as a potential source region for an eastward expansion that is consistent with those of other North American grassland birds of the era. We discuss the potential evolutionary and conservation implications of this range expansion on <em>P. aestivalis</em> given our more nuanced understanding of it. Anthropogenic landscape change initially provided additional habitat for <em>P. aestivalis</em> but has ultimately resulted in a reduction of the <em>P. aestivalis</em> distribution.</p>
COVID-19 lockdown measures impacted citizen science hedgehog observation numbers in Bavaria, Germany
<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has led to temporary changes in human-animal interactions due to changes in human activities. Here we report on a surge in hedgehog observations during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Germany in 2020, on the citizen science web portal 'Igel in Bayern' (Hedgehogs in Bavaria) in Germany. This increase in comparison to previous years could be attributed to an increase in the number of people reporting hedgehog observations, rather than an increase in the number of hedgehog observations done by each observer. Additionally, in contrast to other studies on the effects of a COVID-19 lockdown on observations recorded by Citizen Science projects, the share of observations made in more urbanized areas during the lockdown time was not higher than the change observed in less urbanized areas. This is possibly a result of the differences in COVID-19 measures between Germany and other countries where preceding studies were carried out, in particular the lack of measures limiting outdoor activities for citizens.</p>
Population changes in a whale breeding ground revealed by citizen science noninvasive genetics unique microsatellite profiles of southern right whales
<p>Historical exploitation, and a combination of current anthropogenic impacts, such as climate change and habitat degradation, impact the population dynamics of marine mammalian megafauna. Right whales (<em>Eubalaena </em>spp.) are large cetaceans recovering from hunting, whose reproductive and population growth rate appear to be impacted by climate change. We apply noninvasive genetic methods to monitor southern right whale (<em>E. australis</em>, SRW) and test the application of noninvasive genetics to minimise the observer effects on the population. Our aim is to describe population structure, and interdecadal and interannual changes to assess species status in the Great Acceleration period of Anthropocene. As a basis for population genetic analyses, we collected samples from sloughed skin during post-migration epidermal moult. Considering the exploration-exploitation dilemma, we collaborated with whale-watching companies, as part of a citizen science approach and to reduce ad hoc logistic operations and biopsy equipment. We used mitochondrial and microsatellite data and population genetic tools. We report for the first time the genetic composition and differentiation of the Namibian portion of the range. Population genetic parameters suggest that South Africa hosts the largest population. This corresponds with higher estimates of current gene flow from Africa compared to older samples. We have observed considerable interannual variation in population density at the breeding ground and an interdecadal shift in genetic variability, evidenced by an increase in the point estimate inbreeding. Clustering analyses confirmed differentiation between the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, presumably originating during the ice ages. We show that population monitoring of large whales, essential for their conservation management, is feasible using noninvasive sampling within non-scientific platforms. Observed patterns are concurrent to changes of movement ecology and decline in reproductive success of the South African population, probably reflecting a large-scale restructuring of pelagic marine food webs.</p>

Past, present and future of chamois science
<p><span>The chamois <em>Rupicapra</em> spp. is the most abundant mountain ungulate of Europe and the Near East, where it occurs as two species, the Northern chamois <em>R. rupicapra</em> and the Southern chamois <em>R. pyrenaica</em>. Here, we provide a state-of-the-art overview of research trends and the most challenging issues in chamois research and conservation, focusing on taxonomy and systematics, genetics, life history, ecology and behavior, physiology and disease, management, and conservation. Research on <em>Rupicapra</em> has a longstanding history and has contributed substantially to the biological and ecological knowledge of mountain ungulates. Although the number of publications on this genus has markedly increased over the past two decades, major differences persist with respect to knowledge of species and subspecies, with research mostly focusing on the Alpine chamois <em>R. r. rupicapra</em> and, to a lesser extent, the Pyrenean chamois <em>R. p. pyrenaica</em>. In addition, a scarcity of replicate studies of populations of different subspecies and/or geographic areas limits the advancement of chamois science. Since environmental heterogeneity impacts behavioral, physiological and life history traits, understanding the underlying processes would be of great value from both an evolutionary and conservation/management standpoint, especially in the light of ongoing climatic change. Substantial contributions to this challenge may derive from a quantitative assessment of reproductive success, investigation of fine-scale foraging patterns, and a mechanistic understanding of disease outbreak and resilience. Improving conservation status, resolving taxonomic disputes, identifying subspecies hybridization, assessing the impact of hunting and establishing reliable methods of abundance estimation are of primary concern. Despite being one of the most well-known mountain ungulates, substantial field efforts to collect paleontological, behavioral, ecological, morphological, physiological and genetic data on different populations and subspecies are still needed to ensure a successful future for chamois conservation and research.</span></p>

Community science reveals links between migration arrival timing advance, migration distance, and wing shape
<p>Substantial global data show that many taxa are shifting their phenologies in response to climate change. For birds, migration arrival dates in breeding regions have been shifting earlier, and there is evidence that both evolutionary adaptation and behavioural flexibility influence these shifts. As more efficient flyers may be able to demonstrate more flexibility to respond to changing conditions during migratory flight, we hypothesize that differences among passerine species in flight efficiency, as reflected by morphology, may be associated with the magnitude of shifts in arrival date in response to climate warming. We applied a logistic model to eighteen years of eBird data to estimate mean arrival date for 44 common passerines migrating to northeast North America. We then used linear mixed-effects models to estimate changes in mean arrival date and compared these changes to morphological proxies for flight efficiency and migratory distance using phylogenetic generalized least squares models. On average, passerine species shifted their arrival dates 0.120 days earlier each year, with 27 of the 44 species shifting to significantly earlier arrival times, and two shifting to significantly later ones. Of the 15 species with non-significant shifts, 13 trended toward earlier arrivals. Longer migration distances and higher wing aspect ratios were associated with greater shifts towards earlier arrivals. Migration distance and aspect ratio were also significantly correlated to each other. This suggests that changes in arrival date are affected by factors pertaining to migratory flight over long distances namely, flight efficiency and migration distance. These traits may be able predict the magnitude of arrival date shift, and by extension identify species that are most at risk to climate change due to inflexible arrival timing.</p>

Knowledge of returning wildlife species and willingness to participate in citizen science projects among wildlife park visitors in Germany
<p>Successful conservation efforts have led to recent increases of large mammals such as European bison (Bison bonasus), moose (Alces alces) and grey wolf (Canis lupus) and their return to former habitats in central Europe. While embraced by some, the recovery of these species is a controversial topic and holds potential for human-wildlife conflicts. Involving the public has been suggested to be an effective method for monitoring wildlife and mitigating associated conflicts. To assess two interrelated prerequisites for engaging people in Citizen Science (CS) – knowledge of returning species and respondents' readiness to participate in CS activities for monitoring and managing these species – we conducted a survey (questionnaire) in two wildlife parks located in different states of Germany. Based on 472 complete questionaires, we developed generalized linear models to 1) understand how sociodemographic variables and exposure to the species affected visitors' knowledge of each species, and to 2) investigate if sociodemographic variables and knowledge influenced the likelihood of visitors to participate in CS activities. Almost all visitors were aware of the returning wolf population, while knowledge and awareness about bison and moose were significantly lower. Knowledge of the two herbivores differed geographically (higher knowledge of moose in the north-eastern state), possibly indicating a positive association between exposure to the species and knowledge. However, models generally performed poorly in predicting knowledge about wildlife, suggesting that such specific knowledge is insufficiently explained by sociodemographic variables. Our model to explain stated willingness in CS indicated that younger participants and those with higher knowledge scores in the survey were more willing to engage in CS activities. Overall, our analyses highlight how exposure to large mammals, knowledge about wildlife and human demographics are interrelated - insights that are helpful for effectively recruiting citizen scientists for wildlife conservation.</p>
