Microsatellite genotypes and associated data for: Tetrasporophyte bias coupled with heterozygote deficiency in Antarctic Plocamium sp. (Rhodophyta)

<p>Meiosis and syngamy generate an alternation between two ploidy stages, but the timing of these two processes varies widely across taxa, thereby generating life cycle diversity. One hypothesis suggests that life cycles with long-lived haploid stages are correlated with selfing, asexual reproduction, or both. Though mostly studied in angiosperms, selfing and asexual reproduction are often associated with marginal habitats. Yet, in haploid-diploid macroalgae, these two reproductive modes have subtle, but unique consequences whereby predictions from angiosperms may not apply. Along the western Antarctic Peninsula, there is a thriving macroalgal community, providing an opportunity to explore reproductive system variation in haploid-diploid macroalgae at high latitudes where endemism is common. <em>Plocamium </em>sp. is a widespread and abundant red macroalga found within this ecosystem. We sampled twelve sites during 2017 and 2018 field seasons and used ten microsatellite loci to describe the reproductive system. Overall genotypic richness and evenness were high, suggesting sexual reproduction. Eight sites were dominated by tetrasporophytes, but there was strong heterozygote deficiency, suggesting intergametophytic selfing. We found slight differences in the prevailing reproductive mode among sites, possibly due to local conditions (e.g., disturbance) that may contribute to site-specific variation. It remains to be determined whether high levels of selfing are characteristic of macroalgae more generally at high latitudes or due to the haploid-diploid life cycle. Further investigations of algal life cycles will likely reveal the processes underlying the maintenance of sexual reproduction more broadly across eukaryotes, but more studies of natural populations are required.</p>

A dataset of measured spatial room impulse responses for the transition between coupled rooms

(2021).&nbsp;Acoustic Analysis and Dataset of Transitions between Coupled Rooms. <em>IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing.</em></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset contains&nbsp;measured spatial room impulse responses for the transition between coupled rooms. Four coupled room pairs&nbsp;are included:</p> <ul> <li>Meeting Room to Hallway</li> <li>Office to Anechoic Chamber</li> <li>Office to Kitchen</li> <li>Office to Stairwell</li> </ul> <p>All were recorded at the Aalto University campus using a Genelec 8331A coaxial loudspeaker and an mh acoustics Eigenmike (32 capsule spherical microphone array for fourth order spherical harmonic capture). Each transition features 101 measurements in 5cm intervals from 2.5m inside the first room to 2.5m inside the second room. Transitions are repeated four times corresponding to four different source positions: two inside each room, one which has no continuous line-of-sight with the microphone when in the opposing room, and one which retains a direct continuous line-of-sight with the microphone for all measurement positions.&nbsp;</p> <p>The spatial room impulse responses are downloadable in either Spatially Oriented Format for Acoustics (SOFA) and Wav formats. Supplementary data includes amplitude plots, direct-to-reverberant&nbsp;graphs, estimated direction-of-arrival plots and scaled illustrations of room geometries and source positions.&nbsp;</p> <p>Changelog:&nbsp;</p> <p>V 1.0 - Initial version<br> V 1.1 - Added plots only download option<br> V 1.2 - Improved time alignment of impulse responses and changed normalisation to a single value relative to the maximum of&nbsp;the entire dataset<br> V 1.3 - SOFA files updated to&nbsp;latest Matlab API (1.1.3), &#39;SingleRoomDRIR&#39; convention, with SourcePosition data corrected. THz optical solitons from dispersion-compensated antenna-coupled planarized ring quantum cascade lasers

Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL) constitute an intriguing opportunity for the production of on-chip optical Dissipative Kerr Solitons (DKS): self-organized optical waves which can travel while preserving their shape thanks to the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. Originally demonstrated in passive microresonators, DKS were recently observed in mid-IR ring QCL paving the way for their achievement even at longer wavelengths. To this end we realized defect-less THz ring QCLs featuring anomalous dispersion leveraging on a technological platform based on waveguide planarization. A concentric coupled-waveguide approach is implemented for dispersion compensation whilst a passive broadband bullseye antenna improves the device power extraction and far field. In these devices, comb spectra featuring sech2 envelopes are presented for free-running operation. This first hint of the presence of solitons is further supported by the observation of highly hysteretic behaviour and by phase-sensitive measurements which show the presence of self-starting 12 ps-long pulses in the reconstructed time profile of the emission intensity. These observations are in very good agreement with our numeric simulations based on a Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation time-domain solver. Such devices constitute a new experimental platform for the study of soliton phenomena in the THz range, allowing as well on-chip, passive ultrashort THz pulse generation appealing for a variety of applications.

LiftWEC Deliverable D3.4 - Dataset from coupled hydrodynamic model - SPAR configuration

<p>This dataset contains the OrcaFlex model (.dat files) and the time series of interest (.out files) from the simulations of the LiftWEC coupled hydrodynamic model for the SPAR configuration. Details about the numerical model and results are presented in the corresponding deliverable LiftWEC D3.4 - Implementation of a Coupled Hydrodynamic Model.</p> <p>The simulations are sorted by DLC (1.1 &amp; 6.1). The DLC 6.1 &quot;new mooring&quot; corresponds to simulations of a different mooring system presented in Section 8.1.4 of deliverable D3.4.</p> <p>To understand how the time series are extracted and calculated, the python scripts and input files are provided in the folder PostProc_inputs.</p> <p>For each DLC, an Excel file is present that summarizes the variables main statistics for each simulation (sheet ALL_STATS) and statistics on the whole DLC (sheet DLC_STATS).</p>

Coupled Simulation of OpenFOAM and Flowmol using CPL library

<p>A video showing proof of concept for nucleation of a bubble using coupled molecular&nbsp; (MD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The MD solver (Flowmol but similar results have been shown with LAMMPS) is used to simulate a wall notch and grow the initial bubble before passing density, Volume of Fluid (VOF), velocity and temperature fields to a CFD solver (OpenFOAM). Coupling is handled by CPL library but with MD simuilation pre-run (on the Young supercomputer) and loaded by a Python script which then exchanges the data using CPL library calls (based message passing interface (MPI) to mimic the exchnage in the same way the MD would. This is therefore only one-way coupling with MD data passed to the CFD but not constraint applied.</p>
