Figure 2 in The Behavioral Ecology of Insect Vibrational Communication

Figure 2. Examples of substrate-borne and airborne signals. Substrate-borne vibrational signals are shown for (a) the treehopper Vanduzea mayana, (b) the stinkbug Edessa rufomarginata, and (c) the lacewing Chrysoperla carnea. Airborne signals are shown for (d) the plumbeous pigeon, Columba plumbea; (e) the cicada Fidicina mannifera; and (f) the katydid Neoconocephalus retusus. Note the much higher range of frequencies used by the two insect species producing airborne sounds. Scale bars = 0.5 second.

Dataset Vibrations emitted in presence of reproductives affect social organization in termites

These data were collected from video recordings analyzed with an automated individual tracking system. Variables related to the spatial distribution of individuals and their activity were extracted from the identity and coordinates of each individual for each image.

Vibrations act like primer pheromones in termites

These data were collected on 16 colonies of the species termite Reticulitermes flavipes (column: colony_id). New reproductives were counted every day. They were recognized thanks to the elongated abdomen and color changes. The day of differentiation of an individual ranged from 0 to 60 (column: day). Six different treatments were used: (i) two playbacks with a conserved original structure of the peaks recorded in the presence of reproductives (column treatment: Original +) and in the absence of reproductives (column treatment: Original -); (ii) two playbacks with a structure randomly transformed from the original recordings (called random) were recorded in the presence of reproductives (column treatment: Random +) and in the absence of reproductives (column treatment: Random -); (iii) two controls composed of 100 workers in the presence (column treatment: Control +) or absence (column treatment: Control -) of 2 reproductives (1 female and 1 male; brachypterous neotenics).

The differentiation of an individual is annotated as 1 (column: diff_ergat), associated with the day of differentiation (column: day). Note that many individuals did not differentiate into reproductives during the experiment (column: day = 60, column: diff_ergat = 0 in the dataset). The sex of the differentiated individuals is indicated in the column "diff_mal" (=1 if the differentiated individual was a male, and 0 if not) and in the column "diff_female" (=1 if the differentiated individual was a female, and 0 if not).

The R script called "Script_vibrations_differenciation.R" allows to perform statistical analyses of the data file "Raw_data.csv". The README.md file includes a description of dataset, data analysis, figures produced, and software and packages versions.
