Arthropod abundance in sweep net samples of sites near Crested Butte, CO in 2017-2020
The purpose of this study was to track year-to-year variation in arthropod communities of the host plant Ligusticum porteri (Apiaceae). In each study year (2017-2020), we used sweep nets to sample the arthropods at each of twenty sites containing populations of L. porteri. Sampling took place the end of June (June 28-30th), and we standardized sampling effort across years. Two field technicians netted insects from vegetation at a consistent pace for 30 seconds each. We sorted and identified insects to Order using a dissection microscope and a project-specific taxonomic key. Non-insect arthropods were also counted but not identified to additional taxonomic levels.
Stratified Vegetation Survey Data from an Experimental Mangrove Site in Port Aransas, Texas: 2019
We visually surveyed the vegetation at the front and back of ten large experimental plots located in a large stand of mangroves near Port Aransas, Texas on November 28th, 2019. The ten experimental plots had been thinned using a 3 x 3 m grid in 2012 to create a gradient in plot-level mangrove cover from 0 to 100 percent. We estimated percent cover in six “mangrove” and six “cleared” cells at the front and back of each plot.

Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment II (LINX II): a cross-site study of the effects of anthropogenic land use change on nitrate uptake and retention in 72 streams across 8 different biomes (2003 – 2006).
The LINX II (Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment) project was designed to quantify the rates and mechanisms of nitrate retention in streams using stable isotope tracer additions. The study encompassed 72 stream reaches spread across 8 North American biomes. Within each biome, 9 streams were selected in three watershed land-use categories: 3 reference, 3 agricultural, and 3 urbanized. The core of the study was a 24-hour release of 15N- labeled nitrate. Prior to the isotope addition, physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the stream were measured. The measurements included, but were not limited to, dissolved nutrient concentrations, dissolved conservative tracer additions (to quantify hydraulic and hyporheic retention, velocity and discharge), standing stocks of primary uptake biota (including suspended and benthic particulate materials) as well as channel dimensions, photosynthetically active radiation, and water temperature. During the isotope release, whole stream rates of ecosystem metabolism were quantified (including quantification of re-aeration coefficients using tracer gas additions), and concentrations of 15N-labeled NO3, NH4, N2 and N2O were measured. Immediately following the isotope addition, 15N uptake by aquatic organisms was quantified by sampling biomass components on the stream bed. The data generated from these 72 stream reaches were used to develop a stream nitrogen retention model for each biome, which was expanded to entire drainage networks to predict nitrogen fluxes. The LINX II study demonstrated how biotic uptake of nitrate and denitrification increased with increasing nitrate concentrations. However, the efficiency of total uptake and denitrification actually declined with increasing nitrate concentrations (such as those seen on agricultural or urbanized streams), yielding higher rates of dissolved nitrogen exports downstream. The datasets presented here consist of the primary data collected by the LINX II study participants.

Above ground plant biomass and leaf area were measured in a moist acidic tussock tundra experimental site. The plots were set up in 1981 and have been harvested in periodical (See Shaver and Chapin Ecological Monographs, 61(1), 1991 pp.1-31. Mack, et al, Nature 2004 431:440-443) This file contains the biomass numbers for each harvested quadrat and per cent carbon and nitrogen summaries for harvests through 2000. Leaf area data is presented in other data files (see http://ecosystems.mbl.edu/arc).
Characterization of burned and unburned moist acidic tundra sites for estimating C and N loss from the 2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire, sampled in 2008.
Burned and unburned moist acidic tundra sites used to estimate C and N loss from the Anaktuvuk River Fire (2007). These sites were sampled in summer of 2008. Unburned sites were used to develop a method for estimating soil organic layer depth and plant biomass, and for determining the characteristics of unburned soil organic layers. In burned sites, we characterized residual organic soils and used biometric measurements of tussocks to reconstruct pre-fire soil organic layer depth. Together, these measurements were used to reconstruct pre-fire soil and plant carbon and nitrogen pools and estimate ecosystem losses of these elements during the fire.
Burned soil surface radiocarbon values for moss macrofossils plucked from the Anaktuvuk River Fire sites
We used radiocarbon dating of the organic soil surface remaining post-fire to examine whether the fire burned into ancient and likely irreplaceable soil C pools. Suprisingly, it did not; all radiocarbon dates from burned soil surfaces contained bomb carbon, setting the maximum age of the burned soil surfaces at ~50 years.

Total and individual subsample species percent cover data for all plots where flux or point frame measurements were made in 2012 IVO the LTER Shrub vegetation plots at Toolik Field Station. All plots sampled were dominated either by B. nana or S. pulchra canopies. Cover estimates were made for the five most dominate functional groups using a 1m x 1m grid with 20cm2 blocks with each square representing four percent of the total area. Percentages represent absolute cover so do not sum to 100%.

Maximum canopy height measurements for deciduous shrub canopies sampled for both 1m x 1mc hamber flux polots (n=14) and point frame plots (n=19) in the summer of 2012 near LTER shrub plots at Toolik Lake, AK. The canopies were dominated either by Salix pulchra or Betula nana species, and plot locations were preferentially selected for tall canopies (height > 75 cm). The methods for the chamber flux and point frames are outlined here briefly, though the data from these measurements are contained in separate files.

14 1m x 1m shrub plots were sampled the summer of 2012 under direct and diffuse light conditions. Light response curves were measured under each light condition for each plot using a Li-Cor 6400 to measure net ecosystem exchange (NEP); these measurements were modelled using a saturatingMichaelis-Menton formula. The best fit parameters for those models are contained here (Pmax, K, RE, Eo, and light compensation point) for each individual NEP light response curve (direct, diffuse, and intermediate light conditions) measured with corresponding NDVI , LAI, diffuse light fraction, and average temperature. Sorting variables and curve ID numbers for each curve match the corresponding data in the flux data file.

Each record is a single LiCor flux measurement made with LiCor 6400 photosynthesis system, with associated average pressure, temperature, PAR, water vapor, and other data such as NDVI and LAI measurements taken with a DeltaT SunScan wand under both direct and diffuse light conditions.
