Dataset from Osika and Jania (2024): Geomorphological and historical records of the surge-type behaviour of Hansbreen (Svalbard)

<h2>Geomorphological map of the terrestrial and submarine forefield of Hansbreen</h2> <p>This dataset contains shapefiles of geomorphological features in the terrestrial and submarine forefield of Hansbreen, a marine-terminating glacier in Hornsund (southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard), associated and described further in Osika and Jania (2024).</p> <p>Field investigation was conducted in 2021-2023. Mapping was performed in QGIS 3.22 using the WGS84/UTM33N spatial reference system and based on several datasets:</p> <ul> <li>a very high-resolution orthophotomap and DEM generated and published by Błaszczyk et al. (2022),</li> <li>bathymetric data generated and published by Błaszczyk et al. Data Files for the study "Exploring risk-taking behaviour as a function of cognitive flexibility and emotional intelligence"

<p><span>Risk-taking behaviour refers to how one decides to act with the possibility of negative outcomes which is often pursued in the hope of achieving a lucrative reward, and it can happen in various circumstances, which makes it important to study and understand the key factors behind this cognitive process. The present study focused on understanding these dynamics with emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility. The present study incorporated a healthy sample (<em>n=</em>121) whose emotional intelligence was assessed with MSREIS-R, risk-taking with GDT and cognitive flexibility with WCST. The findings suggested that cognitive flexibility and sub-scale of emotional intelligence did impact risk-taking behaviour, while no moderating effect was found between them. However, the sub-scales of emotional intelligence did predict cognitive flexibility hinting at their interactive relationship which does not erase the possibility of them not affecting risk-taking behaviour completely.<span>&nbsp; </span></span></p> <p>Emotional intelligence questionnaire and manuals, an Excel file consisting of Emotional Intelligence Score, SPSS file, Software file (Inquisit Program file), the link to the task script and other important links, Game of dice task(raw and summary data), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (raw and summary data).</p>

Environmental decomposition of olefinic cuticular hydrocarbons of Periplaneta americana generates a volatile pheromone that guides social behaviour

<p>Once emitted, semiochemicals are exposed to reactive environmental factors that may alter them, thus disrupting chemical communication. Some species, however, might have adapted to detect environmentally mediated breakdown products of their natural chemicals as semiochemicals. We demonstrate that air, water vapour and ultraviolet (UV) radiation break down unsaturated cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of Periplaneta americana (American cockroach), resulting in the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In behavioural assays, nymphs strongly avoided aggregating in shelters exposed to the breakdown VOCs from cuticular alkenes. The three treatments (air, water<br> vapour, UV) produced the same VOCs, but at different time-courses and ratios. Fourteen VOCs from UV-exposed CHCs elicited electrophysiological responses in nymph antennae; 10 were identified as 2-nonanone, 1-pentanol, 1-octanol, 1-nonanol, tetradecanal, acetic acid, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, pentanoic acid and hexanoic acid. When short-chain fatty acids were tested as a mix and a blend of the alcohols and aldehyde was tested as a second mix, nymphs exhibited no preference for control or treated shelters. However, nymphs avoided shelters that were exposed to VOCs from the complete 10-compound mix. Conditioned shelters (occupied by cockroaches with faeces and CHCs deposited on the shelters), which are normally highly attractive to nymphs, were also avoided after UV exposure, confirming that breakdown products from deposited metabolites, including CHCs,mediate this behaviour. Our results demonstrate that common environmental agents degrade CHCs into behaviourally active volatile compounds that potentially may serve as necromones or epideictic pheromones, mediating group dissolution.</p>

Pigs feeding behaviours from two different farms, including behaviours during a tail biting event

<p>These data are linked to the article from Ollagnier et al, 2021 (https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.05.11.443554)</p> <p><strong>Data desription</strong></p> <p>This data set comprises the feeding behaviours of two herds of grower-finisher pigs weighing between 25 and 100 kilograms. One data set originates from a testing boar station in Sweden and contains data collected from October 2004 to July 2007. The data set comes from a previous retrospective study that Wallenbeck and Keeling published in 2013. The second data set contains data from the experimental pig farm of Agroscope and comprises recordings from November 2018 to April 2020. As tail docking is prohibited in Sweden and in Switzerland, the data are from pigs with intact tails.</p> <p>The Swedish data set includes data from 42 pens (21 TB and 21 CTL&nbsp;) of boars (purebred Yorkshire, Landrace or Hampshire) recorded 70 days before and after the TB date. Boars were housed in groups of 7 to 14 animals per pen. Each pen measured 15.7 m<sup>2 </sup>and had a slatted floor and plain resting area. All pigs had <em>ad libitum</em> access to the pelleted feed, which was optimised according to the Swedish nutrition norms for fattening pigs [25]. Water was provided <em>ad libitum</em> and straw was offered daily.</p> <p>The Swiss data set consisted of 23 pens (six TB and 17 CTL) of females and castrated male pigs (Swiss Large White), recorded 100 days before and after the TB date. Twenty pens (18 m<sup>2</sup>) contained 11 to 15 pigs each and were equipped with two automatic feeders; three pens (78 m<sup>2</sup>) were equipped with eight automatic feeders for 31 to 55 pigs each. All pens had straw in racks and sawdust on the floor. Water was available <em>ad libitum</em> through nipple drinkers. The pelleted finisher diet was formulated to have 20% lower dietary crude protein and essential amino acids compared to a standard diet formulated according to the Swiss feeding recommendations for pigs.</p> <p><strong>Data structure:</strong></p> <p>Three observations were considered to describe the feeding behaviours of pigs.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>DFV:&nbsp;</strong>Number of visits to the feeder (from 0:00 to 23:59:59 that date), unit=n,&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>DFC:&nbsp;</strong>Total feed consumption (from 0:00 to 23:59:59 that date), unit=g</p> <p><strong>StdFC</strong>:&nbsp;Daily standard deviation of the feed consumption at each visit, unit=g</p> <p>The data set also contains the following information:</p> <p><strong>Farm:</strong> origin of the feeding behavior data (Swiss or Swedish farm)</p> <p><strong>ID: </strong>unique identification of the pig</p> <p><strong>date:</strong> date at which the feeding behavior is recorded, numerical format.</p> <p><strong>TBSTART:</strong> date at which the tail biting event started in tail biting pens. Data from: Computational fluid dynamics confirms drag reduction associated with trilobite queuing behaviour

<p>Queuing behaviour has been documented in marine arthropods from Cambrian to modern oceans. One possible explanation of this behaviour is drag reduction, with trilobites in the following positions hypothesized to produce less drag than those leading. In this study, we evaluate the hydrodynamics of queuing behaviour in the Devonian trilobite Trimerocephalus chopini using computational fluid mechanics. Our results show that the drag forces of the trilobites following in the queue were substantially lower than those produced by the leader (75.1% lower at 2 cm s-1). Drag reduction is positively correlated with the movement speed of the trilobites, but decreases with increasing distance from the leader. Our results support the hypothesis that the queuing behaviour of trilobites was an adaptation for reducing hydrodynamic drag. This drag reduction effect compensated for the energy cost of movement, which would have been particularly advantageous during migration.</p>

<p>In these experiments we tested if 1) mated female flies (<em>Drosophila nigrospiracula)</em> are more vulnerable to ectoparasite mite (<em>Macrocheles subbadius</em>) infection then unmated conspecifics. 2) If a rest period to recover from male harassment following mating improved resistance to mites and 3) if reduced endurance following mating may explain differential resistance abilities between mated and unmated female flies.</p>

Data from: Three-dimensional trajectories and network analyses of group behaviour within chimney swift flocks during approaches to the roost

Chimney swifts (Chaetura pelagica) are highly manoeuvrable birds notable for roosting overnight in chimneys, in groups of hundreds or thousands of birds, before and during their autumn migration. At dusk, birds gather in large numbers from surrounding areas near a roost site. The whole flock then employs an orderly, but dynamic, circling approach pattern before rapidly entering a small aperture en masse. We recorded the three-dimensional trajectories of ≈1 800 individual birds during a 30 min period encompassing flock formation, circling, and landing, and used these trajectories to test several hypotheses relating to flock or group behaviour. Specifically, we investigated whether the swifts use local interaction rules based on topological distance (e.g. the n nearest neighbours, regardless of their distance) rather than physical distance (e.g. neighbours within x m, regardless of number) to guide interactions, whether the chimney entry zone is more or less cooperative than the surrounding flock, and whether the characteristic subgroup size is constant or varies with flock density. We found that the swift flock is structured around local rules based on physical distance, that subgroup size increases with density, and that there exist regions of the flock that are less cooperative than others, in particular the chimney entry zone.
