Abundance of major taxonomic groups of invertebrates (arthropods and gastropods) collected with pitfall traps at four sites near Toolik Field Station Arctic LTER, Alaska in the summer of 2010.

Invertebrates (spiders, insects and slugs) were collected weekly using pitfall traps at four sites near the Arctic LTER at Toolik Field Station, Alaska. Traps were placed along transects in shrub (shrub-dominant) and open (tussock-dominant) tundra sites. Pitfall traps were placed for 48-hour intervals once per week from early June until mid-July 2010. Collected invertebrates were counted and identified to class (all invertebrates), order or family (for some of the most common families collected).

GroMeteorological parameters were measured hourly adjacent to thermokarst features in the region around Toolik Field Station. Pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, air temperature and relative humidity were all measured at 1-3m above the ground surface with an Onset U30 weather station connected to all sensors.

This data set contains information about an automated radio-telemetry study conducted near Toolik Field Station examining the date that adult male and female Gambel's white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelli) depart the breeding site relative to the timing of breeding and sunrise/ sunset. Climate data from Arctic LTER Toolik Inlet Wet Sedge site, Toolik Field Station, Alaska 2012 to 2018.

Two Figaro TGS 2600 sensors were installed at the Toolik Wet Sedge site in late June 2012 to 2018. The TGS 2600 was the first low-cost solid state sensor that shows a weak response to ambient levels of methane (i.e., range ~1.8–2.7 µmol mol–1). Reference CH4 mole fractions were measured by a Fast Methane Analyser during the years 2012–2016 which was replace by a Fast Greenhouse Gas Analyzer (Los Gatos Research, Inc., San Jose, CA, U.S.A.) in 2016. Data were used in the Eugster et al. Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Stream metabolism data for core sites in Gwynns Falls

An ongoing component of the Baltimore urban long-term ecological research (LTER) project (Baltimore Ecosystem Study, BES) is the use of the watershed approach and monitoring of stream water quality to evaluate the integrated ecosystem functioning of Baltimore. The LTER research has focused on the Gwynns Falls watershed, which spans a gradient from highly urban, urban-residential, and suburban zones. In addition, a forested watershed serves as a reference. The long-term sampling network includes four longitudinal sampling sites along the Gwynns Falls mainstem, as well as several small (40-100 ha) watershed within or near the Gwynns Falls, providing data on water quality in different land use zones of the watersheds. Each study site is continuously monitored for discharge and is sampled weekly for water chemistry. Those data are available elsewhere on the BES website. We are interested in studying the bioreactivity of streams in our watersheds in an attempt to quantify how streams themselves may affect or be affected by water quality. To assess the bioreactivity of streams, we measure whole stream metabolism, which is an integrative metric which quantifies the production and consumption of energy by a stream ecosystem. Stream metabolism represents how energy is created (primary production) and used (respiration) within a stream; it can be thought of as a stream breathing, with primary production being similar to an inhale, and respiration as an exhale. We are monitoring stream metabolism in each of our long-term water quality monitoring stations by deploying sensors that record dissolve oxygen and temperature of the stream every five minutes, and we also have deployed light sensors to record irradiance every five minutes at long-term BES water chemistry streams, which is needed for metabolism modeling. In addition, each dissolved oxygen sensor is located near a USGS gage which estimates discharge every 15 minutes. We used USGS manual discharge estimations linked with

The LTER research is centered on the Gwynns Falls watershed, a 17,150 ha catchment that traverses a gradient from the urban core of Baltimore, through older urban residential (1900 - 1950) and suburban (1950- 1980) zones, rapidly suburbanizing areas and a rural/suburban fringe. Our long-term sampling network includes four longitudinal sampling sites along the Gwynns Falls as well as several small (40 - 100 ha) watersheds located within or near to the Gwynns Falls. The longitudinal sites provide data on water and nutrient fluxes in the different land use zones of the watershed (rural/suburban, rapidly suburbanizing, old suburban, urban core) and the small watersheds provide more focused data on specific land use areas (forest, agriculture, rural/suburban, urban). Each of the gaging sites is continuously monitored for discharge and is sampled weekly for chemistry. Additional chemical sampling is carried out in a supplemental set of sites to provide a greater range of land use. Weekly analyses includes nitrate, phosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chloride and sulfate, turbidity, fecal coliforms, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. Cations, dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen and metals are measured on selected samples. This dataset presents stream chemistry from the Cub Hill stream sites. The Cub Hill site is 14 km from the Baltimore city center (39 degrees 24'30.20N, 76 degrees 30'50.62W) and is the location of the first permanent urban carbon flux tower in an urban/suburban environment, established in 2001 by the U.S. Forest Service. Watershed 263 is a 364 ha urban storm drain watershed (or sewershed), with 30,000 residents with mixed industrial, institutional, and residential land uses. In March 2004, we established monitoring sites in two sub-watersheds within W263 (Baltimore Street and Lanvale Street). Both are approximately 17 ha with 50% impervious surface and 4% vegetation cover.

Tree stand structure summary at Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest LTER sites

We measure trees and shrubs within 50 x 60 m permanent plots at LTER research sites within the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, as a means to monitor vegetation change and to estimate productivity. The 27 LTER research sites represent three replicates each of six successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and three stages of succession following wildfire in the uplands. All trees and tall shrubs within the plot are stem mapped, and the dbh is measured at least every 5 years. The condition of each tree is assessed at the time of measurement and following major disturbance events. Band dendrometers have been placed on select trees at each site where applicable. Litterfall and seedfall are collected and measured annually. White spruce seedlings are mapped and their heights measured every 2 years within the tree plots at younger successional stages. The DBH of alders and willows are measured. Shrub heights are measured annually at young floodplain stands. Changes in species composition through succession are a function of life history traits modified by facilitative and competitive interactions. Vegetation-caused changes in resource (light, nutrients, and moisture)availability during succession control vegetation biomass, productivity, and organic matter and nutrient distribution.

Air Temperature, Soil Temperature, Precipitation, Snow Depth at Long Term Tree Growth Sites; 1968-Present : Weekly

Part of the Long Term Tree Growth study. This dataset is an accumulation of various manual measurements made on a weekly to monthly basis. It originally included snow stakes, rain buckets, max/min thermometers and a series of soil temperature sensors. Over the years equipment has changed. The soil temperature sensors exceeded their field life during the 1990's and were dropped from the study. In 2001 logging air temperature and relative humidity sensors were installed and those measurements were discontinued. In 2002 logging rain gauges were installed to replace the manual buckets. Both styles were during that growing season and the manual buckets were removed before the 2003 field season. All that remains active in this dataset are the snow stake measurements.

Ground Water Depth Readings at BCEF/LTER Floodplain Sites, 1991-Present: Hourly

Campbell CR7 dataloggers were used at FP1A, FP2A, and FP4A to measure ground water and river levels (river levels only at FP4A) during the summer growing season. Each site has four wells being monitored and any river levels are in addition to these wells. A Druk Inc. sensor (model PDRC 10/D) was placed at the bottom of the 3 meter by 15 cm PVC well tubes and calibrated to output depth from forest floor to groundwater. Sensors are scanned every 5 minutes and hourly averages are output to a storage module.
