Soil Moisture taken with a neutron probe 1969-1974 from 11 sites: Weekly
These original basic fertilization experiments were started to give preliminary information for designing future experiments and to study basic long term fertilization responses in a range of age classes for the dominant forest types of interior Alaska. In addition, the instrumentation of the control plots provide long term information on various environmental parameters. No fertilization or growth measurements were done in the black spruce stands.
Vegetation cover: Wickersham fire sites (at the Viereck thaw probe locations), 1977-2004
In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, soil, and vegetation recovery. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest the degree of soil organic layer consumption greatly influences the post-fire community characteristics. The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil and likewise affects the community characteristics after fire and fire suppression. This long-term study is a comparison between the vegetative communities of firelines, burned, and unburned open black spruce forests underlain by ice rich permafrost. Vegetation percent cover for all species were measured in the fireline, burned, and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites, as well as the fireline on the west side of Cushman Creek. This dataset largely focuses on the vegetation of the three east side sites (2004, 2012, and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.>

In this study, tree diameters and heights were measured in an unburned control plot and in a heavily burned plot. There were no trees to measure in the fireline plot. Tree heights and diameters at breast height were measured for tree species in the heavily burned and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites. This dataset focuses on the trees of the east side sites (2004 and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.
Alaskan Peatland Experiment (APEX): Static chamber methane fluxes from fen sites, 2005-2011 and 2015-2016
Methane fluxes were collected at APEX rich fen during the summers of 2005 - 2011 and 2015-2016. APEX Fen is located in the Bonanza Creek LTER outside of Fairbanks, AK. APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient). A warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment) was in place in 2005-2011, but ceased by 2014. In 2015, vegetation manipulation subplots were installed within the water table treatments.

All sites were originally established as part of teresa hollingsworth's phd project during 2001-2002 and were burned in 2004. Species abundance data (using the braun-blaunquet releve method) was collected in 2005 and 2006.
Summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains from 2006-2007.
This dataset contains a summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder dominated along the Tanana River floodplains. Environmental data for each site include terrace height, total thickness of organic layers, depth of uppermost organic layer, soil pH, soil C, N, and P, and soil N/P ratio. Also included are mean thinleaf alder foliar C, N, and P concentrations and foliar N/P ratio for a sumbsample of sites. Estimates of stand age, based on the age of the oldest alder, are available for a subsample of sites. Other stand characteristics include canopy cover, stem density and basal area of thinleaf alder, willows, balsam poplar, and white spruce, and % of alder stems infected with a fungal stem canker at various degrees of disease severity.

This dataset includes the stem diameter of each woody plant >2m tall, by species (or genus), found in each of the thinleaf alder sites we established in the Tanana River floodplains in 2006, as well as an assessment of the severity of canker infection in each thinleaf alder stem. Species (or genus), diameter at breast height (dbh), and severity of canker infection are the variables included here. This dataset can be used in conjunction with a dataset of alder size/age relationships (DN_alder_stand_structure2.xls) to estimate the age structure of alder stands.

This dataset contains a summary of plant species composition and abundance data from thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains in 2006. This includes stem counts by species (or genus) for all woody plants less then 2m in height (both separated by dbh size class and combined), stem counts by species for all woody plants greater then 2m in height, percent cover of each forb and graminoid species, mosses, and lichens, and percent of bare ground. The presence or absence of moose and snowshoe hare feces are also indicated.
Nitrogen cycling at treeline. I. Study Sites and Vegetation
We studied spatial and temporal patterns of nitrogen pools and fluxes in soils at treeline and forested sites within three mountain ranges across a 785 km transect in Alaska during 2001- 2002. We measured pools of soil mineral (ammonium and nitrate) and organic (amino acid and microbial biomass) nitrogen, in situ rates of net mineralization, net nitrification, net amino acid production, and decomposition, as well as soil carbon turnover in a laboratory incubation experiment. A complete characterization of the study can be found in Loomis et al. (2006).
Log Decomposition Dynamics in Interior Alaska 1 - Site Data
The entire dataset (all 7 files) contains detailed information on a time series study of log decomposition in interior Alaska. The species studied include white and black spruce, aspen, birch, balsam poplar and aspen starting as green trees. In addition white and black spruce in recently burned sites are included. The study was designed to produce a time series of log decomposition measurements over the next 100 years. The information to be measured on the logs includes weight and density changes over specified time periods, changes in nutrient concentrations, and hemicellulose, cellouse, and lignin concentrations, and changes in the quantity of nutrients and hemicellulose, cellouse and lignin. (This file contains descriptive information and location data for the sites used in the log decomposition study.)

Alaskan Peatland Experiment (APEX): Static chamber methane fluxes from bog sites, 2008-2011
This dataset includes the static chamber methane fluxes collected from 2008-2011 at the APEX bog site. The bog site includes three types of bogs: a permafrost bog (broken into a control and experimental area), a new collapse site (NW, Nwref, and SW), and an old collapse site (NE and SE). Static chambers are fluxed for methane approximately weekly at the collapse sites and monthly at the permafrost sites. The flux is calculated the linear change in concentration within the chamber over a 30 minute period. The flux is reported as mgCH4/m2/d.
