Yukon River Basin Fire and Permafrost Study: Site description and summary of environmental data (2009-2012)
This study was designed to examine the effects of fire on permafrost across three soil landscapes in interior Alaska: rocky uplands, silty uplands, and sandy lowlands. This dataset provides a description of each intensive study site and summarizes soils data, including soil texture, moisture, water stocks, surface organic thickness, thaw depth, and net seasonal heat input. Associated datasets include soil temperature data, plant species data, and detailed soil information by soil layer.
Dalton and Nenana study site data including: invasive plant density estimates, invasive plant density, soil data, seedling estimates for dominant tree species and ground cover estimates for sites
This dataset contains invasive plant and stand level data for study sites along the Dalton and Parks highways in interior Alaska in the summer of 2012. Study sites were situated in burned and mature black spruce forests to compare invasive plant colonization patterns. Invasive plant density estimates along the road adjacent to each site are included, as well as invasive plant density within study sites. Other data includes ground cover estimates for dominant ground cover types, estimates of seedling abundance for dominant tree species, soil paramters (mineral soil pH and mineral soil moisture, residual organic layer/ organic layer depths, and active layer depths).
Fireline surface level and thaw depths: Wickersham fire sites (1977 - 2009)
In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, vegetation, and soil recovery. Because of the fire?s proximity to Fairbanks, a concentrated effort was made to control the fire and 29 bulldozers constructed 113 km of fireline which averaged 12 m in width (Viereck and Dyrness 1979). The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil. The removal of the organic layer and subsequent loss of thermal insulation results in an increase in permafrost depth of thaw. In addition, thermal subsidence, erosion, and formation of gullies makes the fireline surface unstable and full recovery tends to be a lengthy process. This long-term study examines fireline surface level changes and maximum depth of thaw over time on cross sections of two firelines underlain with ice rich permafrost.

Vegetation composition for 84 sites in the Regional Site Network, compilation from previous surveys.
Many sites in the LTER regional site network (RSN) were adopted from preexisting site networks. Prior to becoming a part of the RSN, releve surveys were conducted at or near the current RSN site using the Braun-Bluanquet cover estimate scale. These data have been compiled for use as a baseline. It is important to note that many of the young successional sites were last surveyed in 2006, 2 years after fire.
Murphy Dome study site soil temperature measurements, 2012-2018
Soil temperature was monitored from August 2012 to July 2013 using two Thermochron iButtons (Maxim Integrated Products, San Jose, CA) installed 10 cm below the SOL surface in each plot. A difference in SOL depth between the stand types resulted in the sensors being in the SOL in black spruce and in the mineral soil in birch. Data is presented as mean daily values (measurement logged every 4 hours) for each study plot.
Rain, well and river water oxygen and deuterium isotope analyses/values for Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest and LTTG sites ( 2002 - Present)
Isotope values for oxygen and hydrogen in waters provide information as to the source of the water, the climate at the time of collection, and the geographical location of the water source. Climate variations may be indicated in changes in the relationship between deuterium and 18O over an extended period. The sources and proportions of sources of ground water can be determined by isotope analysis. Rain, well and river waters were analyzed for ?18O and ?D values from LTER and LTTG sites in 2002, and LTER1, LTER2, UP2, and FP3 sites from 2003 on. Deuterium values were not replicable until the latter part of the 2005 field season and so were not reported until August, 2005.
Litterbag decomposition study, BCEF LTER sites, 1989-1997
This study is designed to estimate the time transient for decomposition of new litter and changes in its chemical composition. The study is designed to last for 10 years. It is conducted in each of the replicate sites that comprise the upland and floodplain successional sequences at the BNZ LTER site.

Treelines in Alaska are advancing in elevation and latitude because of climate warming, which is expanding the habitat available for boreal wildlife species, including snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). Snowshoe hares are already present in tall shrub communities beyond treeline and are the main browser of white spruce (Picea glauca), the dominant tree species at treeline in Alaska. We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. Because multiple factors interact to influence browsing of spruce, including the hare cycle, snow depth and the characteristics of surrounding vegetation, we collected an array of site variables relevant to spruce-hare interactions in Denali National Park, Alaska. Site variables collected included elevation, landscape position, vegetative cover, and the density of white spruce seedlings, saplings and trees.

Litterfall Weights From LTER Study Site Treatment Plots: 1990 - Present
Litter is measured within the nutrient treatment plots at LTER research sites located within the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest. The 21 LTER treatment sites monitored for litterfall represent three replicates each of four successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and three stages of succession following wildfire in the uplands. Three litter trays are placed within each treatment at the 21 LTER sites. Litter trays are 0.5 m x 0.5 m wooden frames constructed of 1" x 4" boards with fine screen stapled to the bottom side. Litter is collected in the spring as soon after snowmelt as possible (usually in May) and in some years in the fall just before freeze-up as well. Litter collections bagged are removed to the lab where they are dried in ovens at 65 deg C for at least 48 hours. Each sample is then weighed to the nearest 0. 1 grams. In 2009 treatments A and C were dropped from the study after finishing the 20 year study.
