<p>This dataset was used for the paper&nbsp;&quot;Balloons in the Sky: Unveiling the Characteristics and Trade-offs of the Google Loon Service&quot;</p> <p>It is composed of three different files, identifying three different case studies Peru, Puerto Rico, and Kenya</p> <p>Once uncompressed, the files are stored in parquet format. They can be analyzed using&nbsp;&nbsp;e.g. pyspark with the following code</p> <pre><code class="language-python">df = spark.read.parquet('dataset.parquet') </code></pre> <p>Each scenario is composed of two tables.</p> <p>The file dataset.parquet contains the measured bandwidth in the analyzed area for a period of approximately three months. Supplementary data to: Trapped in the morphospace: the trade-off between morphological integration and functional performance can limit adaptation

<p>The evolution of complex morphological structures can be seen as the result of interplay between different anatomical units evolving in a coordinated fashion. These can be influenced by genetic, developmental and/or functional integration in response to selective pressures. Using the highly derived humeral morphology of talpid moles as model, here we test whether functional specialization (measured as performance) can be linked to increased levels of morphological integration and, if so, what is the extent of the relationship. Combining 2D geometric morphometrics, phylogenetic comparative methods and functional landscape modelling, we demonstrate that the high biomechanical performance of subterranean moles was coupled with a high degree of integration, whereas less specialized taxa displayed intermediate or low magnitudes of integration. Theoretical morphs occurring in high-performance areas of the functional landscape not covered by any species showed a marked drop in covariation levels, suggesting the existence of a genuine tradeoff between integration and performance in the evolution of talpid moles. We argue that the remarkable stability of the subterranean environment may have helped constraining humeral morphology over a restricted area of the functional landscape, trapping subterranean moles in a narrow region of the landscape, impeding any attempt to reposition on a new ascending slope.</p>

Feasible carbon-trade model for low-carbon density ecosystem

<p>China has set a carbon-neutrality target for 2060; carbon sinks are vital tools to meet this target. China is leading the effort in greening the world through the restoration of low-carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs). The potential carbon sinks of LCDEs provide opportunities for carbon trading projects that make cash benefits accessible to the owners, thereby incentivizing ecosystem restoration. Unfortunately, carbon trading in LCDEs has, to date, been unsuccessful in China. Therefore, it is important to identify the barriers in the development of carbon trading projects in LCDEs.</p> <p>This study aimed at creating a feasible model for carbon trading in LCDEs in China. We first accounted for the carbon sink of LCDEs based on field sampling of 169 quadrants and 3,471 plants. Thereafter, we investigated the trade-off between the cost and efficiency of carbon projects in LCDEs. Finally, we explored the feasibility of the corresponding carbon sink potential by considering carbon price fluctuations and public–private partnership models.</p> <p>The main findings were as follows: (i) Carbon trading in LCDEs is not economically feasible at the current market price of carbon. In the pilot case, the LCDE carbon trading could only recover 41.72% of the project cost. This partially explains the scarcity of carbon trading for LCDEs in the current emission trading scheme; (ii) A benefit transfer model is essential, wherein the costs of ecosystem restoration are paid by the central government, and the benefits of carbon trade are transferred to the owners of LCDEs, providing sufficient incentives for the owners to participate in carbon trading.</p> <p>Policy implications. Given the scarcity of large-scale organisations and expertise, carbon trading in low-carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs) should not be treated as a purely commercial project. A public–private partnership network is a suitable model for engaging stakeholders to complete the carbon trading process in LCDEs. For the success of carbon trading in LCDEs, viable carbon prices and transfer of benefits from public investments are policy issues that need to be further explored. Our findings provide a policy basis for the Chinese government to mobilise more LCDE owners to enter the carbon market and achieve carbon-neutrality.</p>

Community species diversity mediates the trade-off between aboveground and belowground biomass for grasses and forbs in degraded alpine meadow, Tibetan Plateau

<p>Although many empirical experiments have shown that increasing degradation results in lower aboveground biomass (AGB), our knowledge of the magnitude of belowground biomass (BGB) for individual plants is a prerequisite for accurately revealing the biomass trade-off in degraded grasslands. Here, by linking the AGB and BGB of individual plants, species in the community, and soil properties, we explored the biomass partitioning patterns in different plant functional groups (grasses of <i>Stipa capillacea</i> and forbs of <i>Anaphalis xylorhiza</i>). Our results indicated that 81% and 60% of the biomass trade-off variations could be explained by environmental factors affecting grasses and forbs, respectively. The change in community species diversity dominated the biomass trade-off via either direct or indirect effects on soil properties and biomass. However, the community species diversity imparted divergent effects on the biomass trade-off for grasses (scored at -0.72) and forbs (scored at 0.59). Our findings suggest that plant communities have evolved two contrasting strategies of biomass allocation patterns in degraded grasslands. These are the "conservative" strategy in grasses, in which plants with larger BGB trade-off depends on gigantic roots for soil resources, and the "opportunistic" strategy in forbs, in which plants can adapt to degraded lands using high variation and optimal biomass allocation.</p>
