Characterizing ground and surface fuels across Sierra Nevada forests shortly after the 2012–2016 drought

These files include the main processed data and R script used in the analysis for the publication Characterizing ground and surface fuels across Sierra Nevada forests shortly after the 2012–2016 drought accepted in the journal Forest Ecology and Management.

Abtract

The 2012–2016 hotter drought in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA led to the mortality of millions of trees. This disruption to the disturbance regime is an example of how climate extremes can exacerbate current and future wildfire risks. In this study, we used data from an extensive network of forest plots across 13 different sites in the Sierra Nevada to characterize ground (i.e., duff) and surface fuels and their potential drivers shortly after the drought (2016–2018), but before snag (standing dead tree) fall associated with this massive tree mortality event occurred. Overall, we found high biomass of fuels for most sites (138.2 ± 21.7 Mg ha-1, Mean ± 95% CI), especially in areas lacking recent fire or active management, with values up to five times higher than estimates for pre-settlement conditions for mixed-conifer forests in the region. Four major groups of forest overstory structure were identified with some distinct fuel characteristics. These ranged from a cluster of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson)-dominated plots with the highest density of snags, lowest live tree basal area, and lowest total ground and surface fuel biomass (mean = 90.1 Mg ha-1) to a group of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) J. Buchholz)-dominated plots with the highest live tree basal area and highest total fuel biomass (mean = 547.6 Mg ha-1). Although we found relatively weak relationships between forest characteristics and fuel loads, their inclusion in a model selection framework that also considered biophysical variables and disturbance history explained more than 80% of the observed variation in litter + fine woody debris loads. The baseline fuel conditions described here will not only inform the management of drought-impacted forests in the Sierra Nevada, but also help identify key drivers of fuel succession in a changing environment.

Data set from "A free-space interferometer design for optical frequency dissemination and out-of-loop characterization below the 10^{-21}-level"

The data set contains the data underlying the improved out-of-loop interferometer layout performance evaluation published in Photonics Research (https://doi.org/10.1364/PRJ.485899). The experimental setup and the methodology used is explained in that publication.

The data is stored in the Matlab(R)-native file format. This proprietary file format is also readable by other numerical computing environments.

The files 'data_i_*_S*.mat' contain the timeseries of the analysed continuous measurement runs in configuration S*. Each of these files includes the following variables:

year, month, day, hour, minute, second: date at which the measurment point was acquired
rem_float, rem: observed 1s Lambda-averaged out-of-loop frequency deviation in Hz as float and string, respectively
p: measured air pressure in hPa
T: measured laboratory temperature inside the cover close to the interferometer in °C
pressure_phase_OOL: phase variations of the out-of-loop signal estimated from the measured pressure variations
temp_phase_OOL: phase variations of the out-of-loop signal estimated from the measured temperature variations

Different barometers have been used for the pressure mesaurements. In the measurement runs for the S1 and S2PM configurations, a barometer placed in a neighboring laboratory in the same building at PTB was used to characterize pressure fluctuations. For the measurement in the S2 configuration, we used air pressure data from the climate station of the department of Hydrology and River Basin Management of the Technical University Braunschweig, which is ≈6km apart. At times of overlapping operation, we have observed matching pressure instabilities of both barometers for averaging times 𝜏>1000s, which shows that on these averaging times the exact placement of the barometer is of lesser importance.

Experimental characterization of TERIPHIC 4-fold and 8-fold InP photodiode arrays - Detection of 50Gbaud signals with NRZ and PAM-4 modulation formats

The data sets refer to the results from the experimental characterization of the TERIPHIC 4-fold and 8-fold InP-photodiode arrays, which operate in the O-band. The experimental setup consisted of a commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) laser source, a COTS Mach-Zehnder modulator, and the TERIPHIC PD arrays. For the purposes of the experiments, signals with NRZ and PAM-4 modulation formats and 50 Gbaud symbol rates were generated, transmitted, and detected by the TERIPHIC photodetectors. Two different subassemblies were evaluated. The first subassembly had four InP photodiodes and the second eight. The generated photocurrents were sampled by a real-time oscilloscope with a 256 Gbaud sample rate. The data sets are actually the samples extracted from the oscilloscope. The data sets have a filename in the format “Symbol rate#Modulation formats#PDn#Transmission length#version#Subassemblyn.bin”, where
Symbol rate = 50 Gbaud
PDn, for n= 1,2, ...,8
Transmission length = B2B (0 km), 2 km, and 10 km
Subassembly for n=1 and 2

The data sets are parts of the Open data management plan of the TERIPHIC ICT project (GA No. 825502)

Experimental characterization of TERIPHIC quad InP EML array - Generation and transmission of 50Gbaud signals with NRZ and PAM-4 modulation formats

The data sets refer to the results from the experimental characterization conducted on the TERIPHIC quad InP-EML array, which operates in the O-band. Each EML incorporates a DFB laser, an Electroabsorption modulator, and a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier to provide additional power boost, all on the same die. Three out of the four EMLs were characterized successively and generated signals at symbol rates of 50 Gbaud and transmitted them over various fiber lengths. The modulated optical signals were detected by a single commercially avalaible photodetector with more than 70 GHz 3-dB bandwidth. The generated electrical signals were then sampled by a real-time oscilloscope with a 256 Gbaud sample rate. A low-pass filter with a 50 GHz 3-dB cut-off frequency was digitally applied to the oscilloscope to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
The data sets have a filename in the format “Symbol rate#Modulation formats#EMLn#Transmission length#version.bin”, where
SYmbol rate = 50 Gbaud
EMLn, for n= 2, 3, 4
Transmission length = B2B (0 km), 2 km, and 10 km
Version: v1, v2 and v3. Same operating parameters but at different time index

The data sets are parts of the Open data management plan of the TERIPHIC ICT project (GA No. 825502)

Data for: Using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to characterize nest site selection in wild Japanese tits (Parus minor)

Selecting a suitable nest site is critical to the survival and reproduction of birds. Prospecting allows individuals to gather information on the local quality of potential future breeding sites, which may help them make the best nest site selection decision. However, few studies have focused on the direct links between the prospecting activity of breeders and subsequent nest site selection. In this study, we investigated the prospecting pattern of Japanese tits (Parus minor) during the pre-breeding period of the first breeding attempt and whether nest site characteristics influence their nest box visiting behaviour and occupied nest site. We used radio frequency identification (RFID) to track the movements of Japanese tits visiting nest boxes and compared nest site characteristics between visited and unvisited (control) nest boxes, as well as between visited and occupied nest boxes. We found that Japanese tits started visiting nest boxes approximately 20 days before breeding, visited an average of 6 nest boxes and eventually chose the most visited nest box for breeding activities. Japanese tits were more likely to visit nest boxes that had less canopy cover and lower shrub density but a greater total number of surrounding trees and ultimately chose breeding nest boxes with a smaller entrance inclination, in nesting trees with a larger diameter at breast height (DBH) which were surrounded by trees with a larger DBH. Our results suggest that Japanese tits visit several potential breeding sites before choosing breeding nest boxes and that nest site characteristics can influence their prospecting activity and nest site selection.
