Data associated with the FLooded Upland Dynamics EXperiment (FLUDEX), conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area 1997 to 2003, investigating reservoir flooding impacts on ecosystems, particularly the release of mercury and greenhouse gases.
The data included in this repository were collected over the course of the FLooded Upland Dynamics Experiment (FLUDEX) conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) from 1997 to 2003. A plethora of data was collected over five years of flooding three upland reservoir sites, in order to examine the relationship between the amount of flooded, and thus decomposed, terrestrial organic matter and the production of methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the reservoirs. Findings from this experiment suggest that the amount of organic carbon stored in a flooded site does not directly influence the amount of THg, MeHg, and GHGs produced, but it does affect the persistence of mercury in the reservoir and food web. This version of the repository contains data collected on water chemistry, benthic invertebrate (chironomid) emergence, mercury and methylmercury concentrations in the water and food web, stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in emerging insects and zooplankton, and abundance and biomass of zooplankton, phytoplankton, and bacteria. This data package contains only some of the data from the FLUDEX project. IISD-ELA hopes to add more data in subsequent versions.
Demographic census data for four perennial plants under experimental pollination treatments
These demographic data were collected to measure the effects of manipulated pollination treatments on the population dynamics of four iteroparous perennial plant species: Delphinium nuttallianum (Ranunculaceae), Hydrophyllum fendleri (Boraginaceae [Hydrophyllaceae]), Erigeron speciosus (Asteraceae), and Potentilla pulcherrima (Roseaceae). The pollination treatments consisted of Control corresponding to ambient pollination, Reduced for which 50% of open flowers on each individual were enclosed in mesh to exclude pollinators, Supplemented for which all receptive flowers were hand pollinated with outcross pollen, and Variable for which individuals received the Reduced treatment in ca. 50% of years. The full life cycle was characterized from at least four annual demographic censuses of tagged plants between 2017-2022, germination rates estimated in seed addition plots, and soil seed bank survival estimated from buried seed bags.

The dataset describes the structure, composition, and condition of mangrove forests in Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) assessed Feb 2022 - Mar 2023, approximately 5 years post Hurricane Irma (2017) and concurrent with Hurricane Ian (Sep 2022). The dataset includes information on each stem greater than or equal to 1 cm DBH (diameter at breast height) rooted within 69 100 m2 circular plots. Information collected includes site ID, location, species, DBH, status (live or dead), damage associated with the hurricane, presence/absence of regrowth, presence/absence of adventitious roots, whether or not stem is part of a multi-stemmed individual, and the canopy conditions (whether the tree has a canopy or is only sprouting at the base of the tree or trunk). This dataset is associated with the Mangrove Coast Collaborative project (2020 - 2024).

Processed Net N2 Flux and Nitrous Oxide Production Rates from a mesocosm experiment, North River, MA, 2022
The data documented here show nitrogen cycling rates (net N2 flux and net N2O flux) from a tidal, freshwater wetland under two stressors in isolation and in combination over two different disturbance regimes. We used intact core mesocosms to examine how nitrogen cycling changed in response to increased temperature and salinity under pulse and press disturbances. We found that net N2 flux rates, defined as the balance between nitrogen fixation and denitrification did not directionally change in response to stressor pulse or press. Instead, it became more variable under both disturbance regimes. Nitrous oxide production rates, however, decreased and became more stable over time in the press scenario, but remained highly variable in the pulse scenario. These findings provide valuable knowledge on the functional potential of the nitrogen cycling microbial communities in tidal, freshwater wetlands when facing future climate variability.
Global eutrophication and antibiotic resistance genes dataset for "Coupling mechanisms between cyanobacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in freshwater ecosystems"
This dataset compiles global records of cyanobacteria, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and associated water quality parameters to support research on freshwater ecosystem dynamics. It includes 990 metagenomes, 16,648 chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) records, and over 90 documented cases of ARGs–cyanobacteria co-occurrence under comparable spatiotemporal conditions. The dataset covers the years 2000–2024 and provides both raw measurements and harmonized tables for cross-study comparisons. Data were extracted from previously published literature and public repositories, with references to source publications included. This archive is intended to facilitate reproducible analyses, enable large-scale meta-studies, and support further exploration of microbial interactions in freshwater systems.
The impact of the presence of the crayfish Faxonius virilis on the excavating behavior of Faxonius propinquus, Michigan, 2025
Faxonius propinquus are native crayfish to the Upper Midwest. They are burrowing crayfish that work the sediment and make small burrows with numerous openings. These crayfish are imperiled by Faxonius virilis which overlap in niche structure. We were interested in the impact of the chemical cues emanating from F. virilis on the sediment and burrowing nature of F. propinquus. We conducted a study at the University of Michigan's Biological Station using F. propinquus caught in nearby Douglas Lake. In addition, we collected marl substrate from where these animals are found. We created flow through mesocosms and placed F. propinquus in the mesocosm with marl substrate. Then upstream of this, we placed a F. virilis in a flow through container to allow chemical cues from F. virilis to reach F. propinquus. We did a 48 hour study where 24 hours were with a competitor chemical cue and 24 were without. This 48 cycle was repeated to provide discrete 48 hour replicates. We monitored sediment working behavior at night and during the day.

University of Oregon Great Basin Vegetation Cover Study, Southeastern Oregon, 2023.
This data package contains qualitative and quantitative environmental and vegetation survey data used to investigate connections between cattle grazing intensity and vegetation cover in the Great Basin region of Eastern Oregon. The experimental design utilized a piosphere approach to select plots of different grazing intensity in pastures stratified by recent burn history. Surveys were completed in 340 plots around 43 water sources in the summer of 2023. Surveys consisted of recording site characteristics (e.g. slope, aspect, human impacts) as well as measuring plant species cover, cattle and other ungulate dung counts, biocrust development, and soil stability and texture. Plants were generally identified to species where possible, allowing for comparisons between species as well as identification of trends among functional groups (shrubs, annual grasses, perennial grasses, annual forbs, perennial forbs, trees).
Microcystin-LR (one of the toxic congeners of microcystin) exposure causes crayfish to forget previous fight outcomes as well as previous opponents, MI, 2025
Harmful algal blooms are increasing across the globe as a function of nutrient run off and climate change. While the study of the mechanisms that underlie the blooms themselves are abundant, the impact of the toxins produced by blooms needs more research. Crayfish are keystone species in aquatic habitats and rely on chemoreception for many of their ecosystem functions. Crayfish were placed in a fight arena for measure both the outcome and dynamics aspects of agonistic encounters. Then the loser of the fights were exposed to either controls or microcystin for four days. Afterwards, the crayfish fought either another unfamiliar opponent or the previous opponent. The data contained in this package has the concentrations of microcystin exposure, morphological data on the crayfish, and then behavioral data from the two different fights. The behavioral data has two categories: time spent at different levels of intensity and time it took the crayfish pair to reach a certain intensity.
Data of predation on mussels from an LTREB project in the Gulf of Maine, USA, from 1996 to 2021.
Experimental clearings in macroalgal (Ascophyllum nodosum) stands were made in 1996 to determine if mussel beds and macroalgal stands on protected intertidal shores in New England represent alternative community states. Uncleared control plots and four sizes of circular clearings (1m, 2m, 4m and 8m in diameter), which mimicked ice scour events, were established in A. nodosum stands at 12 sites on Swan’s Island, Maine, USA. This dataset reports mussel predation on clumps of 15 mussels (Mytilus edulis) using mesh bags placed in the centers of clearings and controls. Mussel mortality was monitored in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2007 and then annually from 2010 to 2021. Causes of death were attributed to dogwhelks (Nucella lapillus), crabs (Carcinus maenas and Cancer spp.) or unknown causes. Presence and activities (e.g., drilling) of dogwhelks was also recorded. The standardized identifiers (Bay, Site, Plot) allow integration with related Environmental Data Initiative packages on community composition and recruitment of mussels, barnacles and rockweeds. Research was funded by NSF's LTREB program.
Langenheim Plant Species Data (1953) and Associated Resurvey Datasets (2014), Gunnison Basin, Colorado, USA
Quantitative plant abundance data were collected from the same 121 sites at two time periods separated by 65 years (1948-1952 and 2012-2014) in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to examine changes in plant community composition. The sites range in elevation from 2600m to 4100m. Approximately 30 sites were sampled from each of four habitat types: sagebrush (2528-3119m, n=27 sites), spruce-fir forest understory (3001-3520m, n=31 sites) , upland herb = montane meadow (3124-3850m, n=30 sites), and alpine (3549-4013m, n=33 sites). The earlier data set was collected by Jean H. Langenheim (1953, 1962) and consisted of counts of species occurrences along approximately 100m paced transects, noting species touching her boot tip every pace (n=100 sampled points per site). The later data set was collected by Stephanie D. Zorio (2015, 2016) consisting of counts of species occurrences every 1m along 300m transects (n=300 sampled points per site). The sites resurveyed by Zorio (2015, Zorio et al. 2016) were placed as close as possible to the original sites based on the written descriptions of Langenheim, but are only approximate. The GPS coordinates given for the resurveyed sites are the centerpoint of 2 perpendicular 150m transects, one across the slope and the other perpendicular to the slope. GPS coordinates for alpine sites along narrow ridges are the start and end points of three 100m transects along the ridge. Georeferenced localities and environmental site data are presented in Table 2: Lang Zorio Env Site Data. Langenheim’s original data were extracted from tables in her thesis (Langenheim 1953). These data omitted species that occurred in fewer than 14% of sites of a given habitat type (constancy). Species that occurred at very low frequencies (<1% per site) were only denoted as an x in the tables. Zorio converted these to frequencies of 0.5 for quantitative comparative purposes. Increased inflammation and oxidative stress caused by accumulated metal particle exposure among metro station staff, Tianjin, China, 2023
Metro is a significant part of world transport, delivering over 58 billion passengers annually. The dilution effect of particulate matter (PM) from natural ventilation was limited in underground metro stations. What's worse, train operation processes generated PM rich in heavy metals. Though PM pollution in metro stations was reported widely, there is limited evidence of the adverse health effect of metro station PM. This dataset collected urinary samples from 74 metro station staff from three different metro stations in Tianjin, China, for inflammation and oxidative stress biomarker tests to better understand the potential health effects induced by metal particulates in metro stations. Also, an indoor air quality survey was conducted simultaneously in the metro stations.
Towers Forestry Plot, Long-term Vegetation Monitoring in a 1-ha old-growth Rainforest, La Selva Research Station, OTS, Sarapiquí, Heredia, Costa Rica, 2010–2020
The Towers Plot is a 1-hectare permanent vegetation plot established in 2010 under the canopy towers at La Selva Research Station, Sarapiquí, Heredia, Costa Rica. The plot was created by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) to monitor long-term changes in forest structure, composition, and dynamics in an old-growth tropical rainforest. All woody stems with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 10 cm or greater—including trees, palms, and lianas—were tagged, mapped, and measured following standardized procedures. Censuses were conducted between 2010 and 2020 to document growth, mortality, and recruitment. The dataset includes taxonomic identifications, stem diameter measurements, spatial coordinates within the plot, and metadata describing field methods and species composition. The plot was established beneath three canopy towers that had been previously constructed through the NSF-funded Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) project, NSF 0722741, which provided key infrastructure for canopy and environmental research at La Selva. This proximity created a valuable opportunity to integrate vegetation monitoring with existing environmental instrumentation. Johana Hurtado, coordinator of the Tropical Ecology, Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) project at La Selva, collaborated with OTS staff in the establishment of the plot, ensuring methodological consistency with other tropical forest monitoring sites. This dataset provides a comprehensive record of woody plant diversity and forest structure in a lowland old-growth Neotropical rainforest. It supports research on forest dynamics, carbon storage, and ecosystem change. The overall monitoring project is ongoing; this data package contains observations from 2010 through 2020.
Lamprey River New Hampshire Greenhouse Gas Data, 2014-2023
The Lamprey River watershed, located in southeastern New Hampshire (USA), drains 554 km² of low elevation land before discharging into the Great Bay Estuary (Wymore and others 2021). The watershed is classified as suburban with mixed land-use that includes forests (73%), wetlands (10%), development (7%), and agriculture (NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program 2016). We selected four distinct sites within the watershed to capture the dynamics of both tributaries and the mainstem, while accounting for variations in land use, land cover, and nutrient availability. Wednesday Hill Brook (WHB) is a 1st-order stream that drains a residential landscape and has the highest NO3 concentrations among the sites due to a high density of septic systems (Flint and McDowell 2015). Dowst Cate Forest (DCF) is a 2nd-order stream draining a headwater wetland and forested landscape and is characterized by the highest concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The two main stem Lamprey River sites, LMP72 and LMP73, exhibit moderate concentrations of both DOC and NO3 and are located approximately 1 km apart. LMP72 is located at a low-head run-of-river dam while LMP73 is free-flowing water downstream of the reservoir. Our dataset includes weekly water chemistry and dissolved gas data collected from April 2014 through May 2023, except for DCF where data collection ended in 2021, resulting in a total of 1,179 observations across the four different sites.
