Size 111/2 in. by 61/2 in.; foll. 625. Twenty-one and twenty-three lines in a page. I.Foll. 2-31. A classification of the auxiliary parts of speech, الأَدوات, with explanations in Persian. Entitled الهادی للشادی. The author is Abu’l-Faḍl Aḥmad b. Muḥammad MAIDÂNÎ (d. A.H. 518). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. vi. 469, and also Cat. Bodl. ii. 607. The preface begins: اما بعد حمدالله الذی استأثر بالتقاء و تفرّد بالعلاء. The author says that he was requested to write this treatise after completing his السامی فی الاسامی.1 He dedicates it to Ḳâḍi Abu’l-Ḳâsim Manṣûr b. Aḥmad b. Sa’îd. The treatise comprises not only the particles, but also the adverbs, pronouns, auxiliary verbs and nouns, etc. It is accordingly divided into three parts (قسم): 1. Nouns, in twelve chapters; 2. Verbs, in four chapters; 3. Particles (الحروف), in ten chapters. Conclusion: تمت کتابة کتاب الهادی للشادی فی الادوات المدعوّة (!) بالمیدانی. II.Foll. 31v.-44. An explanation of the names of God, The author is not mentioned. Begins: الحمدلله رب العالمین...اما بعد فهذا مختصر فی شرح اسماء الله الحسنی و صفاته العُلی هو قالوا هو اسم موضوع للاشارة الخ. Both this piece and the preceding are beautifully written in Nasta’lîḳ, with frequent vowel-points. III.Foll. 45-131. An Arabic Vocabulary explained in Persian, entitled السامی فی الاسامی. The author, who is not mentioned here, is the aforesaid MAIDÂNÎ. See Ḥ. Kh. iii. 375; Casiri, i. 175; Cat. Lugd. i. 76; and Weijers in Orientalia, i. 368 sqq. Another fragment, no. 997. The author dedicated his work to Saiyid Abu’l-barakât ‘Alî b. Mas’ûd b. Ismâ’îl. Clearly written in Nasta’lîḳ, the Arabic words with vowel-points. Dated 26th Rajab, 965. IV.Foll. 132-437. An abridgement of Abu Naṣr Ismâ’îl b. Ḥammâd Jauharî’s (d. A.H. 398) celebrated Dictionary الصحاح, by ABU’L-KARAM ‘ABD AL-RAḤÎM b. ‘Abdallah b. Shâkir b. Ḥâmid MA’DÂNÎ. The preface begins: الحمدلله علی نعمه المتضاعفة و منحه المترادفة....اما بعد فان محرّر هذه الاسطر السخیفة مقدّمةً لهذه اللغة الشریفة و هو العبد المعترف بذنبه الراجی عفو ربه ابوالکرم عبدالرحیم بن الامام ابی المناقب عبدالله بن الامام ابی المکارم شاکر بن الامام مجد الائمة ابی المطهرحامد المعدانی رحمه الله یقول الخ. The author says that, in reading the Ṣaḥâḥ, he made an abridgement of it, omitting the poetical quotations (الشواهد), etc.; and that he was induced to publish it by Mu’aiyad al-dîn Abu Ṭâlib Muḥammad, son of1 Abu ‘Alî al- Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Abu’l-haijâ. Well written in Nasta’lîḳ, but imperfect at the end. V.Foll. 438-623. A Dictionary Arabic and Persian, the beginning and end of which are wanting. It is arranged according to the first and second letters. It is preceded by an explanation of the names of God, and concludes with a special chapter (باب فی آخر الکتاب فی اسماء شتی), in which the numbers, the names of the measures and weights, etc., are mentioned in succession. Written in two good Nasta’lîḳ hands. The last fol. mutilated. Foll. 606-618 reversed. An index to no. II. is on the fly-leaf. Seal of Muḥammad Hâdi, a servant of ‘Âlamgîr (A.H. 1180). Printed at Calcutta, 1830.1 Begins: حمداً لعلّام اجدی ذوی الافهام تحقیق دقائق اللغات العربیة. This work was compiled from various medical books and dictionaries. Twenty of these are enumerated in the preface, amongst them works as late as the Ḳâmûs and the Ṣurâḥ. Some of the explanations are in Persian. Well written. Dated A.H. 1096. Fol. 366. The names of the weights and measures, derived from IBN SÎNÂ, اسامی الاوزان و الاکیال من شیخ الرئیس ابوعلی, and a similar list, alphabetically arranged, which is taken from the ترویح الارواح (See no. 794). Twenty-five lines in a page. کتاب مجمع البحار (بحار.r) الانوار فی غرائب التنزیل و لطائف الاخبار تالیف شیخ الاسلام قطب الزمان سیدنا و مولانا محمد طاهر بن طاهر المحدّث العلّامة (الحنفی الشامی ثم الکجراتی1) الهندی ثم الفتنی الخ. A large Dictionary to the Koran and the Traditions, by MUḤAMMAD ṬÂHIR, a native of Pattan in Gujarât (d. A.H. 986). See Ḥ. Kh. v. 394, and Cat. Mus. Brit. 756. This work is partly based upon Ibn al-Athîr’s النهایة, above mentioned (no. 999). It consists of three parts, each of which has its own Ḥamdalah and conclusion. The first part (foll. 1-263), which goes as far as رح, is dated Pattan, 20th Ramaḍân (year omitted); the second (foll. 264-539, from رخ to عی) 11th Ramaḍân, 976; the third (foll. 540-867), Ṣafar, 978. The work concludes with a خاتمة (foll. 867v.-894), on various subjects of the science of tradition, which was finished on 12th Rabî’ I. (probably also A.H. 978). Then comes the preamble to an appendix (ذیل, mentioned by Ḥ. Kh.), which latter is, however, not given.2 Well written in Nasta’lîḳ. In the conclusions of the single parts the author is invariably styled شیخ محمد ابن شیخ طاهر المحدث العلامة الهندی شهرة الکجراتی مطلعا الفتنی مولدا. Part II. is dated A.H. 1049. In some places, near both ends, the upper part of the MS. has been destroyed, and restored by another hand. Ends: فهذا ما صح عندنا من المعجزات الواردة فی الاخبار بالاسانید الصحاح من الانبیاء صلوات الله و سلامه علیهم اجمعین. Written in small Nasta’lîḳ. III. Foll. 97-144. شرح نخبة الفکر. IBN ḤAJAR ‘ASḲALÂNÎ’s (d. A.H. 852) Commentary on his own Manual of the Science of Tradition. See no. 199. Written by two Nasta’lîḳ hands. Numerous marginal notes. On the title-page is added a chain of the authorities who handed down Bukhârî’s Ṣaḥîḥ. IV.Foll. 145-154. A Guide to Prayer, styled زاد الفقیر, by Shams al-dîn Abu ‘Abdallah Muḥammad b. Shaikh Zain al-dîn ‘Abd al-wâḥid, commonly called IBN AL-HUMÂM (d. A.H. 861). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 527, who is, however, inaccurate. Begins: الحمدلله ...قال الشیخ الامام ... سالنی بعض اصدقائی الفقراء من طلبة العلم و انا علی جناح سفر ان اکتب له مقدمة علی الصلوة و شروطها مسهلة الانقیاد واضحة المراد یستفید منها کل مرتاد فاجبته...و سمیتها زاد الفقیر ...و اوردت فیها من المسائل ما یکثر وقوعه و ربما وقع فیها القلیل من النوادر انساق القلم الیه الخ. Written like no. II. V.Foll. 155-193. ‘ABD AL-BÂḲI’S Commentary (الآداب الباقیة) on Jurjânî’s treatise on Dialectics (الرسالة الشریفة الشریفیة), the same version as no. 554. Written in small Nasta’lîḳ. Some notes. Foll. 156 and 161 should be transposed. VI.Foll. 194-206. A treatise on Death and Burial, by MUḤAMMAD YA’ḲÛB BANBÂNÎ (البَنْبانی), entitled کتاب العبور عن دار الغرور. Begins: سبحانک من تفرد بالقهر و البقاء الخ. It is divided into chapters, the last of which (فی الرویا) is illustrated by some stories, after which the author concludes as follows (fol. 205v.): انتهت الحکایات المنقولة عن احیاء العلوم اللهم خلقتنی مجانا و رزقتنی مجانا فاغفر لی مجانا الخ. Then comes a chapter in Persian, inscribed فی کیفیة الاسقاط. Well written. The numbers of the chapters, which were to have been added in red, are omitted. VII.Foll. 207-255. الموضح الفصیح. A Commentary on the 12th Sûrah of the Koran, compiled by MUḤAMMAD KÂSHIF Ḥanafî, under the auspices of Aurangzîb, in Dhû-alḥijjah, 1101. Prefixed is a long preface, which begins: الحمدلله مظهر المکنونات عن سرادق العدم الخ. The author says in it, regarding the origin of this work (fol. 218): انی کنت جالسا فی شهر ذی الحجة یوما معی سورة یوسف مع تفسیرها المشهور للعلامة المتین معین الملة و الدین و تفسیرها المنقول للامام الزاهد المقبول و تفسیرها الملقب بزهرة الاکمام1 للامام الهمام الخ. He also used the Kashshâf and Baiḍâwî’s Commentary. Well written. Prefixed to the volume is a list of contents, which is, however, incomplete. [Hastings.]   1 Sic. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. ii. 367, iii. 550.

Size 61/4 in. by 4 in.; foll. 119. Nine, thirteen, and fifteen lines in a page. I.Foll. 1-85. ‘ALÎ ḲÂRÎ’S (d. A.H. 1016) Prayer Book, الحزب الاعظم. See no. 362. Very well written, with vowel-points. Notes on the use of particular prayers are added on the margin. II. Foll. 86-94. و هذه التوسلات بالنبی صلعم تالیف مولانا قطب العارفین الحبیب (؟) عبدالله بن علوی الحداد نفع الله به آمین تقرأ لکل شدة دنیویة و اخرویة الخ. Four addresses to the Prophet in verse, supposed to be great talismans against all evils, and to secure God’s special assistance. The author, ‘ABDALLAH B. ‘ALAWÎ ḤADDÂD (of Tarîm, who flourished in the eleventh century), is mentioned at some length in no. 717, fol. 166 sqq. They begin as follows: <ol> <li> یا رسول الله یا اهل الوفا </li> </ol> یا عظیم الخلق یا بحر الصفا <ol> <li> (fol.88) نبی الهدی لا تنسنی من شفاعةٍ </li> </ol> انی مسئ مذنب ذو جرائر <ol> <li> (fol. 89) یا سیّدی یا رسول الله یا املی </li> </ol> و یا غیاثی ویا کهفی و مدّخری <ol> <li> (fol. 90) یا سیّدی یا سندی یا عمدتی </li> </ol> یا عدتی فی یسرتی و عسرتی They are followed (foll. 91v.-92) by a prayer in prose. It begins: و عن بعض السلف انه کان یدعوا بهذا الدعاء لتفریج الکرب الخ. Well written. A note on the value of the above addresses is added in a bad handwriting. III.Foll. 94-102. A letter of the aforesaid ‘ADDALLAH B. ‘ALAWÎ to ‘Abd al-raḥman b. ‘Abdallah عباد(?), answering various questions,-e.g. about the meaning of a certain dream; whether Ghazzâlî used the terms علم الیقین و عینه و حقه in the same sense as the Ṣûfîs; etc. He also reproduces at the end of it (fol. 98v.) the whole of a letter of Abu’l-‘Abbâs Aḥmad ZARRÛḲ Maghribî Mâlikî (d. A.H. 896 or 899), on the five principles (اصول) of Ṣûfism. Begins: الحمدلله الرقیب الشاهد الخ. Inelegantly written. IV.Foll. 104-113. The same letter, copied, as it seems, from the preceding MS., in a plainer handwriting. Fol. 113 repeats the contents of fol. 108r. V.Foll. 114-115. بیان معرفة شهوة الحرمة, and VI.Foll. 117-118. معرفة طبائع النسا و هن اربعة اجناس الخ. Two notes on sexual intercourse. Ill-written. [Tippu.]

ABU SHUKÛR SÂLIMÎ’S Principles of the Muḥammadan Faith, entitled التمهید فی بیان التوحید, identical with no. 384. The chapters are here more accurately marked, as follows: 1. A fragment of a Commentary (ممزوج) on a short treatise on Religious Duties. This treatise begins: الحمدلله الذی فرّض علینا تعلّم شرائع الاسلام . This piece has been reversed in binding. Plainly written on rice-paper. Occasional interlinear and marginal notes in Javanese, written in the Arabic character. All the vacant pages are filled with the various extracts, chiefly from books on law.

Size 83/4 in. by 6 in.; foll. 389. From thirteen to nineteen lines in a page. I.Foll. 1-10. کتاب الذبح و الاصطیاد المنتخب من کتب الشیخین و وجوه المتاخرین اهل التحقیق و الاجتهاد. A treatise on Butchering and hunting, according to the Shâfi’ite rite; probably by <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80081636.html">SUYÛṬÎ </a>(d. A.H. 911). Begins: الحمدلله الّذی احلّ لنا الطیّبات مصطادة و ذبیحة. This treatise was partly compiled from the works of the “two Shaikhs” (Ghazzâlî and Râfi’î?), and of later authorities, such as Nawawî; but most of its materials were taken directly from the تحفة المنهاج (of Sirâj al-dîn ‘Omar b. al-Mulaḳḳin, d. A.H. 884).1 II.Foll. 11-18. An episode from the legendary history of Muḥammad. The hero of it is Sham’ûn b. Khâlid. Imperfect at the beginning. The first words are: اخرجنا عنا العطش و الجوع. Dated 12th Jumâda I., 1214. III.Foll. 19-34. A legendary account of Muḥammad’s expeditions to the Syrian frontier, and particularly of the expedition to Tabûk; imperfect at the end. The narrative, though rather fabulous, begins with quoting old authorities, as follows: و بعد الحمدلة و التصلیة قال علماء السیر فی اخبارهم منهم محمد بن اسحق و عمّار بن زید المدنی و غیرهما کلهم یرفعون الحدیث الی عبدالله بن مسعود الخ. IV.Foll. 35-224. کتاب شرح الصدور بشرح حال الموتی و القبور. An account of the state of the soul between death and the resurrection, drawn from the Traditions, and arranged in chapters, by <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80081636.html">SUYÛṬÎ</a>. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iv. 39. Incomplete at the end. Defects after foll. 134 and 177. V.Foll. 225-337. کتاب الانوار انوار النبی المختار. A legendary history of the birth and early life of Muḥammad, concluding with his marriage with Khadîjah (a so-called Maulid), by ABU’L-ḤASAN BAKRÎ. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. i. 483, who gives the work a somewhat different title. It is imperfect at the commencement, but apparently only a little is wanting. Begins: من ذلک و سارت الیه الرکبان و قبائل العربان من کل جانب و مکان. One leaf is missing before fol. 247; the contents of it are, however, supplied on the margin of that folio. VI.Foll. 338-389. Some other episodes of the life of Muḥammad, narrated in a legendary or rather romantic style:- his marriage with ‘Â’ishah, the wedding of ‘Alî and Fâṭimah, etc. They are introduced and followed by a chronological survey of the events of the first eleven years of the Hijrah; and the whole concludes with an account of the death of the Prophet, which, however, ends abruptly on the next fol. Begins: ذکر بعض الامور المشهورة بعد الهجرة علی ترتیب السنین. Written in various inelegant hands, apparently in Malabar.1 [Bibl. Leydeniana.]   1 Cf. Ḥ. Written in a large hand, apparently in Java.

Begins: الحمدلله الذی خلق نور محمد بقدرته The single paragraphs of the work are invariably introduced by اعلم انّ…. The last few leaves are injured. III. Foll.51v.-60r. An anonymous treatise on Prayer and its redeeming powers, etc. Begins: الحمدلله رب العالمین...قال النبی صلعم اذا قام العبد الی الصلوة الخ IV. Foll.60v.-62r. Some traditions of various contents. V. Foll.62v.-103r. A treatise without title, on the merits of Ramaḍân, and on the various religious acts which are to be performed in that month, and also on some other subjects. Begins: الحمدلله المشکور علی الآیات...باب فی فضیلة شهر رمضان VI. Foll.103v.-106r. A short tract, beginning: و ینبغی للمؤمنین (!) اذا خرج من الدنیا ان یحمل مع نفسه عشر هِدْیَاتٍ. Terminating abruptly. VII. Foll. 106v.-120. Various moral and mystic aphorisms, attributed to the Prophet. Begins: الحمدلله المُبْدِءِ المعید....قال النبیّ صلعم الفناء ثلثة اشیاء الخ. All these treatises are written in a large plain hand, with vowel-points, but rather incorrect. A Javanese translation in the Arabic character is added between the lines. The rest of the volume is in Javanese in the Arabic character.

Begins: امّا فی المحیط و الظهیرة (؟الظهیریة .r) فی کتاب الایمان رجل حلف لیصلی هذا الیوم خمس صلوات الخ The two latter pieces are written in Nasta’lîḳ, diagonally. V. Foll.19v.-43. Various extracts in Arabic and Persian, such as prayers, charms, legal questions, etc. Irregularly written in Nasta’lîḳ and Shikastah. VI. Foll.43v.-148. A Commentary (ممزوج) on Sirâj al-dîn Sajâwandî’s treatise on the Law of Inheritance, by <a href="http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n88286025/">SAIYID SHARÎF JURJÂNÎ</a>. See no. <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4655846">239</a>. The date of the composition, as given at the end of this MS., viz. end of Dhû-alḥijjah, 811, does not agree with the statement of Ḥ. Kh. iv. 401. Begins: قال الشیخ الامام سراج الملة و الدین...بعد ما تیمن بالبسملة الحمد لله الخ Numerous glosses. Closely written in Nasta’lîḳ. The copyist calls himself Saiyid Shîr Muḥammad b. Saiyid Ibrâhîm Ḥusainî, a “servant” (خادم) of Shâh Jalâl Bukhârî. He completed this copy on 3rd Jum. I., A. 30 Julûs. The corresponding year of the Hijrah is omitted. VII. Foll. 149-211. A work on various parts of Ḥanafite Law, entitled دستور القضاة. It was compiled by Ṣadr b. Rashîd b. Ṣadr Tabrîzî, commonly called ḲÂḌÎ KHWÂJAH. Begins: الحمدلله الذی اعاننی علی جمع هذه المسائل. It is divided into twenty-two chapters, a list of which is inserted after the preface. Inelegantly written in Nasta’lîḳ. VIII. Foll. 213-230. A Persian treatise on the Muḥammadan Faith, by SAIYID SHARÎF JURJÂNÎ; followed by various extracts in Arabic and Persian. IX. Foll. 233-252.1 A Persian Commentary on a Ḳaṣîdah in l, لامیة, in praise of ‘Alî. The author of both is ABU’L-MA’ÂLI Muḥammad, commonly called ‘Alî b. Abu Ṭâlib (!), b. ‘Abdallah b. ‘Alî Zâhidî Jîlânî. The preface begins: لسان حال و ترجمان مقال The Ḳaṣîdah commences as follows: یا حادی الوُرْک عُجْ بالقرب من طَلَلِ The commentary consists of short explanations of the words (اللغة) in Arabic, and a general interpretation in Persian (الترجمة). Well written in Nasta’lîḳ. X. Foll. 254-366.1 The Dîwân of MUTANABBÎ (see no. <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5729354">807</a>), arranged chronologically. Neatly written in Nasta’lîḳ, often diagonally. The beginning and end missing. Begins: وقال ایضا محبّی قیامی ما لذالکم النصل Worm-eaten. The remainder of the volume is in Persian. Size 71/4 in. by 41/2 in.; foll. 212. From thirteen to seventeen lines in a page. I.Foll. 1-24. Badr al-dîn Muḥammad SIBṬ MÂRIDÎNÎ’S (d. A.H. 934) Commentary on a treatise in (Rajaz) verse. On the Law of Inheritance, styled المقدمة الرحبیة. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iv. 398 sq., according to whom the treatise is properly entitled بغیة الباحث.1 The author of it is not known. It begins in this MS. as follows: اول ما نستفتح المقالا بذکر ربنا تعالی (!) والحمدلله علی ما انعما حمدا یجلو عن القلب العمی The commentary commences: قال الشیخ الامام ....الحمدلله رب العالمین ...اما بعد فهذا شرح مختصر علی المقدمة الرحبیة فی الفرائض. Dated Saturday, 29th Muḥarram, 1080. II.Foll. 26-40. A moral treatise, styled انیس المتّقین, by ‘ABD AL-ṢAMAD b. Ḥusain b. Muḥammad. Begins: الحمدلله الذی اقام السموات بغیر العماد. It is divided into five chapters, as follows: 1. فی بیان الغفلة و التکفر (التفکر.r); 2. العلم و الجهل; (3. العقل و الحموقة1;) 4. الفقر و الدنیا; 5. المتوکل و الحریص. Dated 17th Sha’bân..(year omitted). Transcribed by Shaikh Ibrâhîm کوبره, for his own use. The colophon is introduced by two Persian distichs. A defect after fol. 32. III.Foll. 41-172. Another work on Morals, probably entitled سراج القلوب. It was compiled from the traditions and various books, by an unknown author. Begins: الحمدلله علی ما اولانا و الصلوة ...و بعد فهذا سراجُ القلوب و علاج الذنوب اتیتُ فیه من الاحادیث و الآثار و المواعظ المُرِقّات و الحکایات النافعات الخ. It consists of a number of sections (فصل), the first of which is inscribed فی المبادرة الی الطاعة. Ghazzâlî, Yâfi’î, Damîrî, and others, are frequently quoted. Completed on Thursday, 14th Sha’bân, 1055, by Ḥâfiẓ Aḥmad. Notes. IV.Foll. 173-175. A moral Ḳaṣîdah, beginning: ایا طالب الرزق الهنئ و نعمة و من شر دنیا ثم اخری سلامة Cf. no. VI. It has the erroneous superscription تتمة کتاب السنن, which belongs to the next piece. V.a. Fol. 175v. The conclusion of ABU DÂ’ÛD SAJASTÂNÎ’S (d. A.H. 275) کتاب السنن. Cf. Ḥ. Daily prayers, الفصل الاول فیما تکرر للانسان فی الیوم و اللیلة من حین ایقاظه2 من النوم الی نومه باللیل. 2. Prayers for special occasions, الفصل الثانی فی اذکار و دعوات لامور عارضات. Begins: الحمدلله رب العالمین ...و بعد فاعلم ایّها الحریص علی محو3 السیّئات، الراغب فی اکتساب الخیرات، ان الاشتغال بما ورد فی الحدیث النبوی من الاذکار و الدعوات الخ. Ends (fol. 198r.): خاتمة الکتاب فی خصال تورث البرکة و الوقر و تنفی السوء و الفقر ذکرها الامام الوصابی (!) فی کتاب البرکة نفعنا الله به و هی منظومة فی هذه الابیات. Then follows the beginning of the above-mentioned Ḳaṣîdah (no. IV.), written on the margins of this page and the preceding. VII. Foll. 198v.-200. A short treatise on the properties of every hour in the week. Inscribed: هذا خصال هو الساعات (!). Begins: الحمدلله علی ما هو اهله ...فان فی هذه الورقات خصائص الساعات خصائص ساعات یوم السبت الاولی لزحل ردیة الخ. It is followed by a list of the companions of the Prophet who knew the Koran by heart. VIII. Foll. 201-204. A legendary account of the wedding of Fâṭimah. Begins: هذا قصة تزویج فاطمة رضی الله عنها قال الشیخ ان الله تبارک و تعالی خلق الخلق الخ. The contents of the first page, which had been lost, have been written on the margin of fol. 201. IX. Foll. 205-209. A fragment, containing the latter portion of a work on daily prayers. X. Foll. 210-212. A prayer in verse, inscribed هذا المناجات لقضاء الحوائج من المُجربات. Begins: لک الحمد یا ذی الجود و المجد و العلی تبارکت تعطی من تشاء و تمنع With a Persian interlinear translation, also in verse. It is followed by various alleged sayings of the Prophet. Written by various hands. The seal of Ḥâfiẓ Aḥmad (see no. III.) is impressed on most of the tracts. [Bibl.
