To test how climate warming and variation in soil moisture supply will jointly influence photosynthesis of southern boreal forest tree species we measured gas exchange rates of 11 species in an open-air warming experiment at two sites in northern Minnesota, USA. The experiment ran for three years and used juveniles of 11 temperate and boreal tree species under ambient and seasonally warmed (+3.4 degC above- and belowground) conditions. We measured in situ light-saturated net photosynthesis (Anet) and leaf diffusive conductance (gs) on numerous days across the three growing seasons. Soil and plant temperatures and soil moisture were continuously measured from sensor arrays.

As growing seasons in the northwestern USA lengthen, on track with climate predictions, the mixed conifer forests that dominate this region will experience extended seasonal drought conditions. The year of 2015, which had the most extreme drought for the area on record, offered a potential analog of future conditions. During this period, we measured the daily courses of water potential and gas exchange as well as the hydraulic conductivity and vulnerability to embolism of six dominant native conifer species, Abies grandis, Larix occidentalis, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus monticola, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Thuja occidentalis, to determine their responses to 5 months of record low precipitation. The deep ash-capped soils of the region allowed gas exchange to continue without significant evidence of water stress for almost two months after the last rainfall event. Midday water potentials never fell below -2.2 MPa in the evergreen species and -2.7 MPa in the one deciduous species. Branch xylem was resistant to embolism, with P50 values ranging from -3.3 to -7.0 MPa. Root xylem, however, was more vulnerable, with P50 values from -1.3 to -4.6 MPa. With predawn water potentials as low as -1.3 MPa, the two Pinus species likely experienced declines in root hydraulic conductivity. Stomatal conductance of all six species was significantly responsive to vapor pressure only in the dry months (August-October), with no response evident in the wet months (June-July). While there were similarities among species, they exhibited a continuum of isohydry and safety margins. Despite the severity of this drought, all species were able to continue photosynthesis until mid-October, likely due to the mediating effects of the meter-deep, ash-capped silty-loam soils with large water storage capacity. Areas with these soil types, which are characteristic of much of the Northwest USA, could serve as refugia under drier and warmer future conditions.
Public opinion about management strategies for a low-profile Species across multiple jurisdictions: whitebark pine in the northern Rockies
<p>1. As public land managers seek to adopt and implement conservation measures aimed at reversing or slowing the negative effects of climate change, they are looking to understand public opinion regarding different management strategies.</p> <p>2. This study explores drivers of attitudes toward different management strategies (i.e., no management, protection, and restoration) for a low-profile but keystone tree species, the whitebark pine (<i>Pinus albicaulis</i>), in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Since the whitebark pine species has a range that traverses different federal land designations, we examine whether attitudes toward management strategies differ by jurisdiction (i.e., wilderness or federal lands more generally).</p> <p>3. We conducted a web and mail survey of residents from Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, with 1,617 valid responses and a response rate of 16%. <a name="_Hlk36455244"></a></p> <p>4. We find that active management strategies have substantially higher levels of support than does no management, with relatively little differentiation across protection and restoration activities or across different land designations. We also find that support for management strategies is not influenced by values (political ideology) but is influenced by beliefs (about material vs. post-material environmental orientation, global climate change, and federal spending for public lands) and some measures of experience (e.g., knowledge of threats).</p> <p>5. This study helps land managers understand that support for active management of the whitebark pine species is considerable and nonpartisan and that beliefs and experience with whitebark pine trees are important for support</p>

Patterns in the genetic structure of 49 lowland rain forest tree species co-distributed on opposite sides of the Northern Andes
<p>The Andes are a major dispersal barrier for lowland rain forest plants and animals, yet hundreds of lowland tree species are distributed on both sides of the Northern Andes, raising questions about how the Andes influenced their biogeographic histories and population genetic structure. To explore these questions, we generated standardized datasets of thousands of SNPs from paired populations of 49 tree species co-distributed in rain forest tree communities located in Panama and Amazonian Ecuador and calculated genetic diversity (<em>π</em>) and absolute genetic divergence (<em>d</em><sub>XY</sub>) within and between populations, respectively. We predicted (1) higher genetic diversity in the ancestral source region (east or west of the Andes) for each taxon, and (2) correlation of genetic statistics with species attributes, including elevational range and life-history strategy. We found that genetic diversity was higher in putative ancestral source regions, possibly reflecting founder events during colonization. We found little support for a relationship between genetic divergence and species attributes except that species with higher elevational range limits exhibited higher <em>d</em><sub>XY</sub>, implying older divergence times. One possible explanation for this pattern is that dispersal through mountain passes declined in importance relative to dispersal via alternative lowland routes as the Andes experienced uplift. We found no difference in mean genetic diversity between populations in Central America and the Amazon. Overall, our results suggest that dispersal across the Andes has left enduring signatures in the genetic structure of widespread rain forest trees. We outline additional hypotheses to be tested with species-specific case studies.</p>

Abundance of Oxythyrea sp. and Tropinota sp. Flower Chafer Beetles on Various Plant Species in Northern Mallorca
<p>The relevant study investigated the habitat preferences of beetles belonging to the <em>Oxythyrea</em> and <em>Tropinota</em> genera in Northern Mallorca, with a particular focus on flowering species as host plants. A total of 838 observational results were collected throughout field surveys. Key findings indicated that <em>Oxythyrea </em>sp. and <em>Tropinota </em>sp. beetles predominantly inhabited areas with dense populations of flowering <em>Galactites </em>sp. and <em>Asphodelus </em>sp. plants in this region.</p>
