Leaf net photosynthesis in CO2 x N x water treatment combinations:BioCON : Biodiversity, Elevated CO2, and N Enrichment
BioCON (Biodiversity, CO2, and Nitrogen) is an ecological experiment started in 1997 at the University of Minnesota's Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve. BioCON's goal is to explore the ways in which plant communities will respond to three environmental changes that are known to be occurring on a global scale: increasing nitrogen deposition, increasing atmospheric CO2, and decreasing biodiversity. Why Biodiversity, CO2, and Nitrogen? While there are many uncertainties in global change biology, there are also some well documented facts. Some of these are: 1. The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is rising. Since the industrial revolution, the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has increased from approximately 275 parts per million (ppm) to about 378 ppm today. This has been largely the result of fossil fuel burning. It is expected that CO2 levels will continue to rise, and that by the year 2050 these levels will be approximately 550 ppm. CO2 is the raw material for photosynthesis and is known to affect plant growth and development. 2. The amount of nitrogen moving through terrestrial ecosystems has increased in the recent past. While natural "background" levels of nitrogen fixation have remained constant, human additions to the system through fertilizer production and fossil fuel use have increased dramatically. Nitrogen is a key nutrient for plant growth and plays a critical role in plant community structure and composition in many environments. 3. Biodiversity levels are falling. While the research and data are not as complete as they are for CO2 and nitrogen, data indicate that the number of species globally, is being reduced. Perhaps more important for ecosystem function, diversity levels on local to regional scales have fallen due to land use change, biotic invasion and many other drivers. Data from: Combination of polyethylene glycol impregnation and paraffin heat treatment to protect round bamboo from cracking
Round bamboo has drawn more and more attentions in architecture, decoration and recreational products. Splitting brings some safety problems, which shorten the service life of Round bamboo. In this paper, three schemes were adopted as follows to solve the problem: Round bamboo was impregnated in PEG-1000 solution alone, heat-treatment in paraffin alone, or treated with the combination of PEG impregnation and paraffin heat treatment (PEG-PH). The treated bamboo was exposed outdoor for 26 weeks to evaluate the development of cracks. Results showed as follows: The initial split of PEG-PH treated bamboo appeared after 22 weeks, while that of the controls after 2weeks, respectively. the total length of cracks were 2271.31 mm and 873.5 mm for the control and PEG-PH treated bamboo. To reveal the reasons for reduced cracks, scanning electron micrograph (SEM) were employed to observe the microstructure of bamboo, besides, hydrophobicity of bamboo was characterized by water contact angle (WCA). PEG can swell the cell wall and the better hydrophobicity of round bamboo could be achieved after PEG-PH treatment. Therefore, the combination of PEG immersion and paraffin heating is an effective and practicable method in bamboo treatment, especially for round bamboo with high moisture content.
Data from: Efficacy and safety of four weeks' treatment with combined fluticasone furoate/vilanterol in a single inhaler given once daily in COPD: a placebo-controlled randomised trial
BACKGROUND: Fluticasone furoate/vilanterol (FF/VI) is a novel once-daily (OD) inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting β2 agonist combination in development for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. TRIAL DESIGN: A multicentre, randomised, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study. METHODS: Participants were patients with moderate-to-severe COPD treated with placebo or FF/VI 400/25 μg OD for 4 weeks. Study objectives were to assess the safety and efficacy of FF/VI 400/25 μg OD administered for 4 weeks via a novel dry powder inhaler. Co-primary end points were change from baseline in weighted mean (wm) heart rate 0–4 h postdose at day 28 and the incidence of adverse events (AEs). Secondary end points included change from baseline in trough forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) (23–24 h postdose; day 29) and wm FEV1 (0–4 h postdose; day 28). Patients were randomised to receive FF/VI 400/25 μg or placebo in a 2:1 ratio; all patients and investigators were blinded to active or placebo treatment. RESULTS: 60 patients (mean age 64 years) were randomised (FF/VI: n=40; placebo: n=20), and all contributed data to the analysis. Mean screening post-bronchodilator FEV1 per cent predicted was comparable between groups (FF/VI: 58.5%; placebo: 60.1%). The wm heart rate 0–4 h postdose was similar between groups (difference: 0.6 beats per minute; 95% CI −3.9 to 5.1). More on-treatment AEs were reported in the FF/VI group (68%) compared with the placebo group (50%). The most common drug-related AEs in the FF/VI group were oral candidiasis (8%) and dysphonia (5%). There were no clinically relevant effects on laboratory values, including glucose and potassium, or on vital signs or ECGs/Holters. The FF/VI group had statistically greater improvements compared with placebo in trough FEV1 (mean difference 183 ml) and 0–4 h postdose wm FEV1 (mean difference 236 ml). CONCLUSION: FF/VI has a good safety and tolerability profile and improves lung function compared with placebo in patients with COPD.

Combined pressure and flow measurements to guide treatment of coronary stenoses
<p><strong>Objectives:</strong> The aim of this study was to assess clinical outcomes after combined pressure and flow assessment of coronary lesions.</p> <p><strong>Background:</strong> Although fractional flow reserve (FFR) remains the invasive reference standard for revascularization, approximately 40% of stenoses have discordant coronary flow reserve (CFR). Optimal treatment for these disagreements remains unclear.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A total of 455 subjects with 668 lesions were enrolled from 12 sites in 6 countries. Only lesions with reduced FFR and CFR underwent revascularization; all other combinations received initial medical therapy.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Fourteen percent of lesions had FFR<=0.8 but CFR>=2.0 while 23% of lesions had FFR>0.8 but CFR<2.0. During 2-year follow-up, the primary endpoint of composite all-cause death, myocardial infarction, and revascularization in lesions with FFR<=0.8 but CFR>=2 (10.8% event rate) compared with lesions with FFR>0.8 and CFR>=2 (6.2% event rate) exceeded the prespecified +10% noninferiority margin (P = 0.090). Target vessel failure models using both continuous FFR and continuous CFR found that only higher FFR was associated with reduced target vessel failure (Cox P = 0.007) after initial medical treatment. Central core laboratory review accepted 69.8% of all tracings with mean differences of <0.01 for FFR and <0.02 for CFR, indicating no material impact on clinical measurements or outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> All-cause death, myocardial infarction, and revascularization after 2 years was not noninferior between lesions with FFR<=0.8 but CFR>=2 and lesions with FFR>0.8 and CFR>=2. These results do not support using invasive CFR>=2 to defer revascularization for lesions with reduced FFR if the patient would otherwise be a candidate on the basis of the entire clinical scenario and treatment preference.</p>
