Anxiety status and coping strategies in association with sociodemographic factors, dietary and lifestyle habits in Greece

Aim:

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between nutritional habits, lifestyle, anxiety, and coping strategies

Background:

Anxiety is an underestimated and often undiagnosed subclinical disorder, that burdens the general public of modern societies and increases illness susceptibility.

Methods:

Study group consisted of 693 individuals living in Peloponnese, Greece. A standardized questionnaire consisting the dietary habits and lifestyle questionnaire, the trait Anxiety STAI-X-2 questionnaire, the HAM-A questionnaire and the brief-COPE questionnaire was used. Principal components analysis identified the factors from the questionnaires and stepwise multivariate regression analysis investigated their relationships.

Results:

Weekly consumption of fruits, tomatoes, salads and lettuce, together with Εmotional/Ιnstrumental support, Denial/Behavioural disengagement, substance use and self-blame, were the most important predictors of anxiety scores. Positive reframing/Humour and Acceptance/Planning also associated with the Positive STAI factor and decreased anxiety scores

Conclusion:

Healthy nutritional habits, comprised by consumption of salads and fruits, together with adaptive coping strategies, such as Positive reframing/Humour and Active problem solving may provide the most profound improvement in the anxiety levels of a healthy population in Peloponnese Greece.

Religious Coping, Hopelessness, and Suicide Ideation in Subjects with First-EpisodeMajor Depression: An Exploratory Study in the RealWorld Clinical Practice

Religious Coping, Hopelessness, and Suicide Ideation
in Subjects with First-EpisodeMajor Depression:
An Exploratory Study in the RealWorld Clinical Practice

Abstract: Background. This study aimed to evaluate the potential relationships between religious
coping, hopelessness, and suicide ideation in adult outpatients with the first episode of major
depressive disorder (MDD). Methods. Ninety-four adult outpatients with MDD were assessed
through the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and the
Scale of Suicide Ideation (SSI). Religious coping was assessed with the Italian version of the Brief
RCOPE scale, consisting of seven positive coping items (PosCop) and seven negative coping items
(NegCop). Results. The results showed that the Brief RCOPE PosCop scale exhibited a strong inverse
correlation with HAM-D, BHS, and SSI, whereas HAM-D and BHS were positively correlated with
SSI. Brief RCOPE NegCop scores were positively correlated only with SSI. Regression analysis with
SSI as the dependent variable showed that higher Brief RCOPE PosCop scores were associated with
lower suicide ideation, whereas higher HAM-D and BHS scores were associated with higher suicide
ideation. Conclusion. Positive religious coping may be a protective factor against the development of suicide ideation, perhaps counteracting the severity of depressive symptoms and hopelessness.
The evaluation of religious coping should be performed in all subjects with MDD in everyday clinical
practice. However, this study was preliminary, and limitations must be considered.

Increasing production efficiency and coping with climate change, while ensuring sustainability and resilience

The 3rd group of experiments (GE3) was designed to assess the effect of legume crops cultivated during autumn (from August to January) as cash crops or as green manure on the next tomato crop cultivated during spring (from February to July). Thus, GE3 included two experimental crops, one with legumes starting in August 2018 and terminated in January 2019 (GE3E1) and one with tomato, which started in February 2019 and terminated in July 2019 (GE3E2). In the experiment with legumes tested as preceding crops to tomato (GE3E1), four different treatments were established. In particular, treatment 1 (T1) was a cowpea crop cultivated as a cash crop aiming to produce cowpea pods during autumn 2018. Similarly, treatment 2 (T2) was a common bean crop cultivated as a cash crop aiming to produce commercially marketable common bean pods during autumn 2018. Treatment 3 (T3) was a faba bean crop aiming to be incorporated to the soil at anthesis as green manure. Finally, Treatment 4 (T4) was a faba bean crop aiming to be incorporated to the soil at anthesis as green manure
