Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area in July-August 2007. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey was conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and will be performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

Fall 2000 fungal monitoring -- marshgrass ergosterol content and ascospore release rates at 10 GCE sampling sites
Leaves of dominant marsh plants were collected from permanent plots in 10 GCE LTER sampling sites in order to assess the relative biomass and activity of fungal decomposers. The quantity of ergosterol, a specific fungal cell-membrane component, and the rate of ascomycete spore expulsion were measured in pooled lots of leaves from the dominant marsh vegetation at each site. Samples were collected from both creek bank and mid-marsh habitats. The dry weight and organic content of the plant material was also measured. This study is part of the GCE microbial decomposer monitoring program, and will be repeated annually to assess long-term patterns of fungal activity in relation to various environmental factors.

November 2001 to March 2003 water column chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations for Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected from the surface and the bottom of the water column at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites and from the surface of the water column during a low water transect along the Altamaha River in November 2001, March 2002, June 2002, September 2002, December 2002, and March 2003 . Samples were taken at various times of day and under various tidal conditions. The particulate matter was separated by filtration and analyzed for chlorophyll and phaeopigment content by flourometric analysis. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and is repeated quarterly.

Plant allometry at GCE sampling sites 1-10 in October between 2002 and 2020.
The relationship between height and mass (allometry) was measured for plants collected from Georgia Coastal Ecosystems sampling sites 1-10 in October between 2002 and 2020. This dataset includes data from previous allometry measurements (PLT-GCEM-0211b and PLT-GCEM-0711) and data from 2 additional species measured at site 8 in 2020. Shoots or leaves (Juncus) were collected adjacent to permanent plots in each marsh zone by clipping at the soil surface. Dead leaves were removed from shoots. Height, flowering status (Spartina, Typha and Panicum species only), number of leaves (Spartina species and Zizaniopsis), and dry mass were measured for each plant. The allometric relationships determined in this study will allow annual GCE plant monitoring data to be converted from height to mass. This study may be repeated in the future to examine temporal trends in relation to environmental changes.
Fall 2001 plant monitoring survey -- shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10
A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2001 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

Map of ecological sites and ecological states for pastures 1, 4, 14, and 15 on the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, New Mexico
This data package includes an ArcMap geodatabase for the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) pastures 1, 4, 14, and 15: one polygon feature class, one point feature class, associated attribute tables and metadata. The spatial data, CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMap_v1.gdb.zip, represents the ecological sites and states on Pastures 1, 4, 14 and 15 on the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, and includes field traverse data. CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMapMetadata.pdf and TraversePointsMetadata.pdf contain the geospatial metadata provided by ArcMap. CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMap_v1.csv is the attribute table associated with the state map’s polygon feature class, and TraversePoints.xlsx is the attribute table associated with the traverse points feature class and includes a sheet containing detailed attribute metadata.
Termite foraging data from bait mass loss at eleven locations at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1988-2000
This data package contains data on yearly mass loss of termite baits at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. Termites are important to litter decomposition and nutrient cycling in desert grasslands. This study measured annual feeding activity on paper baits by subterranean termites in desert shrubland and black-grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) grassland ecosystems over twelve years. Eleven sites, known as the "consumer plots" were included in the study. Toilet paper roll termite baits were placed on grids on each consumer plot. Data include initial bait weights before deployment, and bait weights after they were retrieved from the field each year. Mass loss of the baits was calculated as a measure of termite foraging activity. This study is complete.
Soil volumetric water content calculated from neutron hydroprobe data at 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1989-2011 (Deprecated)
This data package contains soil water content data calculated from monthly neutron hydroprobe count measurements made at 15 net primary production (NPP) study locations on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Once a month, neutron probe measurements are made at 10 depths (where possible) at each of 10 access tubes at each of the 15 NPP sites using a neutron probe (CPN Model 503DR Hydroprobe). The raw dataset, also on EDI (knb-lter-jrn.210013001), consists of the count of thermalized neutrons at 30 cm depth intervals to a maximum depth of 300 cm. In this data package, the raw neutron counts have been converted to volumetric water content (VWC) to a maximum depth of 270 cm using calibration equations (deepest probe depths are excluded from VWC calculations). The NPP sites these measurements are made at represent the 5 dominant vegetation types of the Jornada Basin, which consist of 3 shrub (creosotebush, mesquite dune, and tarbush) and 2 grass (upland grassland and playa) types. Three NPP sites are located in each of the types. This data collection is ongoing with new data collected monthly. NOTE: This data package is deprecated and will not be updated in the future. These VWC values were calculated using a now-outdated calibration method. Values of VWC calculated with the improved and fully documented calibration method are available in another EDI data package (knb-lter-jrn.210013003).

This data package contains daily precipitation values from a rain gauge near the former Biodiversity study site at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. Data collection at the Biodiversity site began in 1996 and is now complete. Data collection from the tipping bucket rain gauge near this site commenced in April 1996. The data file included here reports daily precipitation totals in millimeters (mm). Data collection from this tipping bucket rain gauge is ongoing and collected on a monthly basis (data package may be updated less frequently).

This data package contains high temporal resolution values from a tipping bucket rain gauge during rain events near the former Biodiversity study site at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. Data collection at the Biodiversity site began in 1996 and is now complete. Data collection from the tipping bucket rain gauge near this site commenced in April 1996. The data file included here reports 1-second (1997-2016) or 1-minute (2016-present) frequency precipitation data, in millimeters, from this rain gauge during precipitation events. There are no data records for rain amounts less than 0.1 mm. Data collection from this tipping bucket rain gauge is ongoing and collected on a monthly basis (data package may be updated less frequently).
Surface abrasion and crust evolution following vegetation removal at the Jornada Basin LTER Scrape Site, 1995 to 2019
This data package contains measurements of soil surface abrasion and the evolution of soil crust shear strength following a soil and vegetation removal (scrape) treatment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. Soil erosion and soil crust shear strength is measured at 3 locations along the prevailing wind direction across a site initially scraped in 1995 to remove the A soil horizon in a 100 meter radius semicircle. There are three monitoring stations (East, Middle, West) on the Scrape Site. The West site is the windward site, the East site is the leeward site, and the middle site is halfway between the other two. At each location, measurements are taken of the distance of the sand surface and soil crust to a crossbar set into the soil. Three "Torvane" measurements that measure the torque (shear strength) needed to break the crust are also made at each location. These measurements were made monthly until 2014, and are made annually since 2015. The Scrape Site has now become the location for the GROWES study (JRN study IDs 511 and 523). Data collection for this study is ongoing.
Soil water content under rainfall manipulation and nitrogen fertilization treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2009
This data package contains soil water content data from a precipitation and nitrogen manipulation experiment conducted on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2006-2009. The objective of the study was to understand the interaction of precipitation and nitrogen dynamics on ANPP legacies. Rain-out shelters were used to create 5 levels of precipitation: 80% reduced, 50% reduced, ambient control, 50% increased, and 80% increased precipitation. Half of the plots were randomly assigned to receive ammonium nitrate fertilizer. In a subset of the plots, volumetric soil water content was monitored at shallow (0-5 cm) and deep (30-50 cm) depths. This data set contains the date of collection, block number, plot number, 2007-2008 precipitation treatment, 2009 precipitation treatment, nitrogen treatment, depth of soil probe, sensor voltage, and volumetric water content. Monitoring of soil moisture for this study was discontinued in November 2009. Also available are plant cover data from this study in data package knb-lter-jrn.210278002. Plant cover under precipitation and nitrogen manipulation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2006-2008
This data package contains plot cover data from a precipitation and nitrogen manipulation experiment conducted on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2006-2008. The objective of the study was to understand the interaction of precipitation and nitrogen fertilization on aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) legacies. Rain-out shelters or supplemental irrigation were used to create 5 levels of precipitation: -80% and -50% reduced, ambient control, and +50% and +80% increased PPT. Half of the plots were randomly assigned to receive ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Plant cover was sampled with a line intercept method in fall 2006 before any treatments began, then again in fall 2007 and 2008 after treatments had been applied.
