Nine lines in a page.</p> <p>A compendious work on Asceticism, called عين العلم .</p> <p>It is not an abridgment of Ghazzâlî’s <em>I</em><em>ḥyâ</em>, as is stated by Stewart (Catal. 139), who followed a notice on the margin of this MS. (fol. 1<em>v</em>.).<sup>1</sup> The author is not named,<sup> 2</sup> but it would appear that he was an Indian scholar. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iv. 282.</p> <p>The work is introduced by an elaborate preface, which begins:يا ربّ يا ربّاه باسمك ابتدى ‘ بك اقتدى‘ وبنور قدسك اهتدى . The author, imitating the old poets, complains of the ‘departure’ of knowledge and science, etc. He dedicates his work to a Saiyid of the Ḥusainî branch, named Ibrâhîm. It is divided into an introduction and twenty chapters, which are entitled as follows: المقدّمة فى العلم (fol. 4<em>v</em>.) ; Chap. I.الباب الاول فى الورد (fol. 10<em>v</em>.) ; II. فى الانفاق و القناعة (fol. 29<em>v</em>.); III.فى الصوم و كسر الشهوة (fol. 35<em>v</em>.) ; IV.فى السفر (fol. 40) ; V. فى التزوّج و التخلّى (fol. 47<em>v</em>.) ; VI.فى الكسب و الورع (fol. 55<em>v</em>.); VII. فى الاتباع فى المعيشة (fol. 60<em>v</em>.) Dated Ramaḍân, 1037. The titles are in gold, and the formula which introduces the traditions quoted by the author ( ورد حand the like) is always in blue. Frequent explanations, extracted from a commentary and from other works, are added on the margin; others are written between the lines. Many ornaments. Ḥusâm al-dîn (Hindî Makkî) commonly called MUTTAḲI, a Ḥanafite (of Burhânpûr, d. A.H. 975, at Makkah). Cf. Cat. Mus. Brit. 756 <em>n</em>.; Ḥ. Kh. ii. 553, etc.</p> <p>The preface begins:الحمد لله الذى نوّر قلوب العارفين فاقتبسوا من لوامع كلامه و كلام رسوله غرر وجوه المعانى و الاشارات.</p> <p>The author states that this collection consists of about 3000 sentences (حِكَم) , viz. 500 اقتباسات , or sentences mixed with quotations from the Koran ; <sup>1</sup> 500 تضمينات , or traditions which, on account of their conciseness, are preceded by an introductory and explanatory phrase, rhymed with them; <sup>2</sup> 300 sentences of <em>Ibn </em>‘<em>A</em><em>ṭâ </em>(see below, no. 696), and 100 of his ‘’disciple’’ ( تلميذه , <em>i.e</em>. according to a marginal note, داود بن باخلا ) ; the rest being sayings of the ‘’Ancients’’ (من كلام السلف) .</p> <p>These materials, which follow invariably in the order just mentioned, are distributed under some eighty heads, which are arranged alphabetically, as باب فى الايمان , باب فى الاحسان , and so forth. A list of them is inserted after the introduction (مقدّمة) , which treats of the definition of حكمة . As to the general character of the work, the author remarks (fol.2): كمال لذّة هذا التاليف موقوف على ان يكون الشخص حافظاً مفسّراً محدّثا و ان يكون له ذوق من علوم الصوفية.</p> <p>Conclusion : اتممتُ الكتاب حامداً مصلياً .... و انا الفقير علىّ المتّقى الراجى من الله العطايا و الهبات و هو الذى يقبل التوبة من عباده و يعفو عن السّيئآت.</p> <p>Well written, of the eleventh century. Size 9 in. by 5 in.; foll. 59. Seventeen lines in a page.</p> <p>An anonymous Commentary (ممزوج) on the theosophic treatise, التحفة المرسلة الى النبىّ , by MUḤAMMAD B. FAḌL ALLAH Hindi Burhânpûrî (d. A.H. 1029). The latter was a disciple of Shaikh Wajîh al-dîn b. Ḳâḍi Naṣr Allah ‘Alawî Hindi Aḥmadâbâdi, who lived from A.H. 910 to 998, and was the pupil of Shaikh Muḥammad b. Khaṭîr al-din Ḥusainî, commonly called al-Ghauth, the author of الجواهر الخمسة (see above, no. 671). A co-disciple of the author’s, Shaikh of Ṣibghat Allah b. Rûḥ Allah b. Jamâl Allah Ḥusainî Hindî Barûjî, who died at Madînah, was the Shaikh of Abu’l-mawâhib Aḥmad b. ‘Alî b. ‘Abd al-ḳuddûs Ḳurashî ‘Abbâsî Shinnâwî Madanî, and a pupil of the latter was شيخنا الامام ثم الهدلى الانصارى المعروف بالقشار طيفى (!) الدين احمد بن يونس بن احمد المقدسى الرجالى ثم المدنى الانصارى المعروف بالقَشارى (!)<sup>1</sup> , who was born A.H. 991, and died A.H. 1071, at Madînah, and was the Shaikh of the author of the present commentary. The latter, therefore, lived in the eleventh century, probably at Madinah. His name is not mentioned, His commentary is entitled اتحاف الزكىّ بشرح التحفة المرسلة الى النبىّ . He wrote it for the instruction of the Muḥammadans of Java, whose notions of orthodoxy had recently been troubled by the introduction of Ṣûfî writings, which their divines were not able to interpret. He, therefore, selected the present treatise, which was very popular with them, in order to show its entire accordance with the doctrines of the Koran and the Sunnah.</p> <p>The preface begins:الحمدلله الاول الذى ليس قبله شئ . The commentary refers only to the commencement of the treatise, and its chief subject is the absolute essence (الوجود) .</p> <p>The treatise begins:الحمد لله رب العالمين اما بعد فيقول العبد .. <sup>2</sup> هذه نبذة من الكلمات فى علم الحقائق الخ.</p> <p>Well written, of about A.H. 1100. Only foll. 1-58 have been supplied at a modern date.</p> <p>The second volume, which begins (fol. 164<em>v</em>.) with كتاب الاذكار و الدعوات, is older than the first, and may belong to the eighth or even the seventh century. It is written in a bold hand, often with vowel-points, and has occasional emendations. The end is slightly injured by insects.</p> <p>This MS. was once the property of ‘Abd al-bâḳi b. A.H. 1024) Commentary on his own mystic Ḳasîdah, لاميّة الشرف . It is entitled (fol. 2<em>v</em>.) نهج السعادة و نسج الافادة. See Ḥ. Kh. v. 291 sq., who, however, gives the title somewhat differently.</p> <p>The name of the author does not occur in this MS.</p> <p>It begins:الحمدلله الذى انزل على عبده الكتاب المبين ‘ و اصطفى آدم و نوحا و آل ابرهيم و آل عمران على العالمين.</p> <p>The whole Ḳaṣîdah is inserted after the preface.</p> <p>The commentary is very copious; numerous other verses are quoted in it. It concludes with a Ḳaṣîdah by the author, each verse of which is devoted to one letter of the alphabet. It begins:</p> <p>الف الالوهة اوّل الايجاد و قيامها لجوامع الافراد</p> <p>It is also accompanied by a commentary.</p> <p><strong>II. He says in conclusion: و اياك يا اخى ثم اياك ان تخرج من مكة فلو لم يدخل عليك الاّ فلسان من حلال لكان خيرا لك من ان يدخل عليك فى غيرها الفان الخ.</p> <p>Carefully written in a good hand, probably by Ibrâhîm b. Maḥmûd b. Ibrâhîm, whose seal (A.H. 1037) is at the end.</p> <p>II.Foll. 6<em>v</em>.-11. كتاب الرابع الخ . A tract on Asceticism, by IBN ‘ARABÎ, entitled حلية الابدال و ما يظهر منها من المعارف و الاحوال . See Ḥ. Kh. iii. 108, for an abstract of the preface.</p> <p>It treats of the four ‘’columns’’ of the ascetic life: silence, solitude, hunger, and watching (الصمت ، السهر ، الجوع ، العزلة).</p> <p>Written in a huried hand.</p> <p>III.
