Kuskokwim River Floodplain: White Spruce (Picea glauca) annual tree-ring width measurements (mm) at breast height from tree-core samples taken above Red Devil on the Kuskokwim River in July, 2007

This dataset contains annual raw ring width measurements in the Tucsan (decadal format) (.rwl file extension) of 14 large white spruce trees growing within 50m of the Kuskokwim River. Ring-widths were measured to 0.001mm on a velmex laser micrometer and accuracy was checked by crossdating using COFECHA. Annual values were measured from 1779-2006.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR), Gradient, and Watershed: Dissolved Organic Carbon 2007-2022

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data set includes weekly thaw depth measurements collected from winter warming, summer warming, and control treatment plots at CiPEHR. Additional measurements from on-plot gas flux wells, water table monitoring wells, and off-plot locations are also reported. Note that the experimental warming portion of this experiment concluded in 2022. These data are a continuation of measurements taken at previously warmed plots but plots were not actively manipulated after 2022. At the Gradient Thaw Site, in this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Macroalgae Production in Florida Bay (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, May 2007 - April 2023

Benthic primary production in Florida Bay is mainly driven by mangroves, seagrass, peryphiton, and macroalgae. The nutrient dynamics and salinity regimes at Florida Bay are strongly influenced by marine waters from the Gulf of Mexico, oceanic waters from the Atlantic Ocean and fresh waters from the Everglades creating a complex estuary with oligohaline ecotones. Marine and groundwater are sources of P and are expected to decline with increased freshwater inflow (Childers et al. 2006a; Price et al. 2006). The Taylor Slough ecotone, (TS/Ph), which flows into the Bay, is characterized by small tidal influence and clear seasonal variability in water source and quality (Davis et al. 2003; Sutula et al. 2001), receives P from shallow groundwater inputs (Price et al. 2006).Therefore the amount of freshwater inputs from the Everglades will affect salinity, water residence times, and the sources, availability, and flux of organic and inorganic nutrients on Florida Bay. As a consequence gradients of N and P concentrations are characteristic in the Bay with expected low concentration of P and high N on the fresh water end, contrasting with higher levels of P and lower of N towards the marine section of the Bay. This gradient in P concentrations is expected to reflect in differences in both primary production and biomass along the TS/Ph ecotone. One of the Everglades LTER scientist general hypothesis is "that increasing inputs of freshwater will enhance oligotrophy in nutrient-poor coastal systems, as long as the inflowing water has low nutrient content; this dynamic will be most pronounced in the oligohaline ecotone" (LTER program). In this context we expect to have a differential production of calcareous macroalgae along the TS-Ph transect which reflect the P gradient with low productivity towards the fresh water influenced sites close to the Everglades increasing towards the marine section of the Bay. Mollusc population abundance monitoring: Fall 2007 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2007 estimate of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Species abundance was determined by hand-collecting all the infaunal and epifaunal molluscs from within quadrats of known area in mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in ethanol, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, counted and measured (size data is reported separately). The counts were converted to number per square meter. Gastropod species are listed first, followed by bivalve species. Size distribution data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-0804a2.

Fall 2007 crab population monitoring: mid-marsh and creek bank abundance based on crab hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2007 estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creek bank zones (n = 4 per zone) at GCE sites 1 through 10. This method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total crab abundance. Plugged holes were excluded from the counts. Mean density across all sites and zones was 284 m^-2 (+/- 286 s.d.).

The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-0804a1. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

Archaeological shovel test data for Little Sapelo Island, Mary Hammock, Patterson Island, and Pumpkin Hammock; Spring 2007, Summer 2007 and 2008

The purpose of this study was to determine the human occupational history of Little Sapelo Island, Mary Hammock, Patterson Island, and Pumpkin Hammock in McIntosh County, GA. During the Spring of 2007 and Summers of 2007 and 2008, a systematic archaeological shovel test survey was performed at a closely-spaced interval of 20 meters. The shovel test grid was laid out using a Trimble GPS, in accordance with the Universal Trans Mercator coordinate system Zone 17, and the North American Datum of 1927 (with a typical accuracy between 1 and 6 m). Teams of two people would go to these locations, dig holes (typically 50 cm in diameter and 1 m deep), and put the soil through wire hardware cloth with a mesh size of 0.6 cm (i.e., 0.25 inch). All cultural material (except shell) were collected and put in labeled plastic bags. Only some shell samples were kept for future analysis. Ceramics were classified to determine surface treatment/ decoration, temper, and rim form, with the ultimate goal of determining their period of use. All of the data related to these shovel tests were entered into a spreadsheet, and that spreadsheet was turned into an ArcGIS point shapefile for analysis. Summer 2007 crab population survey based on crab hole counts in fifty-four GCE LTER Hammock sites and four GCE LTER study sites

Crab abundance was investigated at fifty-four hammock sampling sites and four Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study sites in June-July 2007 by counting crab holes as a proxy measurement. Each hammock site had six permanent study plots which were previously laid out. Crab holes were counted within a random location inside those six plots at each hammock. Crab holes were counted within a 625 cm^2 area and species were not differentiated in the count, but noted. This method estimates total crab abundance in each study site.

Summer 2007 survey of plant presence and abundance at fifty-five GCE LTER Hammock sites and five GCE marsh monitoring sites

Presence and abundance of plant species was determined at the six permanent monitoring transects within fifty-six GCE LTER hammock sites and five GCE LTER study sites in June-July 2007. Plant presence was determined by placing a 1 m x 1 m qaudrat at two meters from the upland border of the study site’s permanent monitoring transect and noting all species present. In the center of the quadrat, an additional 0.5 m x 0.5 m qudarat was placed to determine percent cover of each species. Plant height was also measured and recorded that the four corners of the 0.5 m x 0.5 m qudarat.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Watershed 3 well water level recordings, 2007 - ongoing

This dataset consists of groundwater levels measured within wells distributed across Watershed 3 at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from 2007-2020. Water levels are expressed as a depth (cm) from the soil surface. This dataset is a part of a larger project aimed at explaining the spatial and temporal variation in stream water chemistry at the headwater catchment scale using a framework based on the combined study of hydrology and soil development – hydropedology. The project will demonstrate how hydrology strongly influences soil development and soil chemistry, and in turn, controls stream water quality in headwater catchments. Understanding the linkages between hydrology and soil development can provide valuable information for managing forests and stream water quality. Feedbacks between soils and hydrology that lead to predictable landscape patterns of soil chemistry have implications for understanding spatial gradients in site productivity and suitability for species with differing habitat requirements or chemical sensitivity. Tools are needed that identify and predict these gradients that can ultimately provide guidance for land management and silvicultural decision making. Better integration between soil science, hydrology, and biogeochemistry will provide the conceptual leap needed by the hydrologic community to be able to better predict and explain temporal and spatial variability of stream water quality and understand water sources contributing to streamflow. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Photosynthetic rates of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains photosynthetic rate data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. Plots were subjected to precipitation treatments consisting of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. A subset of plots also had a nitrogen addition treatment. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for photosynthetic rate under ideal conditions in a LiCor cuvette. This study has been completed.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate endophytes root colonization in Upper Green Lakes Valley, 2007-2016

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) are two fungal groups that colonize plant roots and can benefit plant growth, but little is known about their landscape distributions. We performed sequencing and microscopy on a variety of plants across a high-elevation landscape featuring plant density, snowpack, and nutrient gradients. Percent colonization by both AMF and DSE varied significantly among plant species, and DSE colonized forbs and grasses more than sedges. AMF were more abundant in roots at lower elevation areas with lower snowpack and lower phosphorus and nitrogen levels, suggesting increased hyphal recruitment by plants to aid in nutrient uptake. DSE colonization was highest in areas with less snowpack and higher inorganic nitrogen levels, suggesting an important role for these fungi in mineralizing organic nitrogen. Both of these groups of fungi are likely to be important for plant fitness and establishment in areas limited by phosphorus and nitrogen.
