Common Raven (Corvus corax) Occupancy Survey and Habitat Selection Data in Cliff Habitat of the Central Appalachian Region, USA, 2009-2010

We identified 24 cliff sites across four states of the Central Appalachian Region of the eastern USA (Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia) with known raven occupancy at which to perform occupancy surveys for estimating detection probability and the effects of covariates. We surveyed each cliff site 2-4 times in either 2009 or 2010 and recorded time-to-first detection and time to confirmed cliff occupancy during a two-hour survey. Daily surveys were completed between 06:00 and local solar noon. During each survey, we recorded covariates, including air temperature at survey start time, cloud cover, wind speed, and day of year. We also calculated the distance of the observation point from the cliff being surveyed and the forest cover around the cliff. We also collected data thought to be pertinent for habitat selection by ravens on 26 cliffs occupied by ravens and 26 cliffs deemed unoccupied by ravens in 2010. For each cliff, we measured cliff physiographic characteristics, such as cliff length, cliff height, and occlusion by vegetation, and landscape characteristics, including percent forest and urban cover around the cliff and distances from the cliff to the nearest road and human habitation.

Factors Influencing Aboveground Carbon Storage in Mixed Oak-Pine Forests: USDA FIA Data from Southeastern U.S. (2009-2019)

This study explores factors affecting aboveground carbon (AGC) storage in mixed oak-pine forests across the Southeastern United States. Utilizing USDA Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from 2009 to 2019, the research spans nine states: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and Virginia. Data processing in R included converting units to the metric system and calculating structural diversity using Shannon diversity indices. Climate data from the PRISM Climate Group were integrated with FIA data using longitude and latitude. The research aims to uncover how various factors influence AGC storage and contribute to informed forest management practices.

Marcell Experimental Forest daily bulk atmospheric deposition, 2009 - ongoing

This data set reports daily bulk atmospheric deposition calculated from the event-based chemistry of precipitation water that was collected at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. The data come from sites in two research catchments instrumented for hydrologic monitoring - the meteorological station located in an upland clearing in the S2 research catchment and the S1 bog as part of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment. The MEF is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is a multi-year cooperative project among scientists of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated by UT-Battelle, LLC and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is funded by the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research Program.

Long-term monitoring of peatlands located near oil sands mining activities surrounding Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (2009-Present)

Oil sands mining activities in the Fort McMurray region of Alberta, Canada, have led to increased atmospherically deposited nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S), with N steadily increasing over time and S peaking in 2009, then decreasing with the installation of scrubbers on upgrader stacks. Ecosystems (such as ombrotrophic bogs) near these mining activities see an increase to their depositional load. These peatlands are isolated from groundwater and receive inputs only from precipitation, making them uniquely susceptible to changing depositional scenarios. To evaluate the effect of oil sands development on bogs in this area, since 2009, we have collected and analyzed porewater (pH, conductivity, NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S, and total dissolved N), N and S as represented in extractions of ion exchange resin precipitation collectors (NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S), samples of new growth from the most dominant plant species (C, N, and S, with Ca, Mg, K, and P analyzed in later years), and have recorded annual growth of vegetation. For a majority of the years, we have sampled at least 3 times (June, July, and August). Some sites have burned and have been replaced by others, however, collections are on-going and data from these collections are uploaded as they are published.

Marcell Experimental Forest porewater chemistry at the S2 catchment, 2009 - ongoing

This data set reports surface and porewater chemistry from the bog and lagg of the S2 peatland at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. Lagg porewaters have been collected weekly from shallow depth samplers (0-10 cm) at two sites, 2009 to ongoing. Bog porewaters have been collected weekly or biweekly from shallow depth samplers (0-10 cm) at three sites from 2010 to ongoing. Bog waters have been collected monthly at multiple depths (0, 30, 50, 100, and ~200 cm) at three piezometers nests from 2014 to ongoing. Lagg and bog surface or porewaters were synoptically collected from up to 40 and 13 sites (0-10 cm depth), respectively, multiple times from 2009 to 2014. Samples have never been collected when samplers were frozen (typically November to May). Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, manganese, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon. Ferrous and ferric iron concentrations have been measured for some but not all samples. Water isotopes have also been measured for some but not all samples. The MEF is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Aquatic and terrestrial insect activity phenology with trap collections at the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009-2014

This study was designed to evaluate the influence of microclimatic heterogeneity, associated with complex terrain, on phenology and to evaluate potential trophic responses to scenarios of climate change, disturbance and land use. We focus on a simplified model trophic system involving vascular plants, terrestrial and aquatic insects, and migratory neotropical and resident birds. The model trophic system is interesting because the phenologies of different components in the model system are independent (cued by various abiotic drivers) and dependent (due to trophic interactions), potentially leading to complex system behaviors. Plant and poiklothermic animal (ex. invertebrates) phenologies are highly temperature dependent. Phenologies of terrestrial plants and invertebrates would therefore likely exhibit wide spatial and temporal variation across the landscape in response to temperature variation associated with elevational differences, cold air drainages patterns, and temperature inversions. Aquatic invertebrate phenologies are also tied to temperature, but stream temperatures are influenced by different factors than those driving air temperatures and they may be less sensitive to complex terrain. For the invertebrate part of this study, we are examining spring-time (April through June) flying (terrestrial and adult aquatic) insect activity and adult aquatic insect emergence across a range of sites in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. Flying insect activity will be assessed using malaise traps deployed at 16 sites ranging from 450m to over 1300m in elevation, and with a variety of forest stand ages and slope aspects. Emerging aquatic insects will be collected with emergence traps in six 1st to 2nd order streams ranging from 450m to 1000m in elevation, and differing in water source (spring vs run-off) and surrounding forest age. Stream temperature at core phenology stream sites in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009 - 2014

The H.J Andrews phenology research included this study of stream temperatures at six headwater streams where springtime emergence of stream macroinvertebrates were collected. Streams were selected across an elevational gradient and with young riparian forests as well as old growth riparian forests. One site was a stream that originated in a cold water spring and the site was a stream that drys late in the summer. Stream temperature loggers were placed in protective housings and stream temperatures collected year-round starting May 2009-July 2014. Data were evaluated for quality control and missing periods were filled. These data document the thermal environment that stream macroinvertebrates experience and that influence their timing of emergence (database SA025).

Eddy Flux Measurements, Ridge Station, Imnavait Creek, Alaska - 2009

In contribution to the Arctic Observing Network, the researchers have established two observatories of landscape-level carbon, water and energy balances at Imnavait Creek, Alaska and at Pleistocene Park near Cherskii, Russia. These will form part of a network of observatories with Abisko (Sweden), Zackenburg (Greenland) and a location in the Canadian High Arctic which will provide further data points as part of the International Polar Year. This particular part of the project focuses on simultaneous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape at hourly, daily, seasonal and multi-year time scales. These are the major regulatory drivers of the Arctic climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. We will provide a comprehensive description of the state of the regional Arctic system with respect to these variables, its overall regulation and controlling features and its interaction with the global system.In support of these objectives, a 3m eddy covariance station was established on a low ridge adjacent to Imnavait Creek, Alaska. This station has been continuously monitoring carbon dioxide, water vapor, energy fluxes and various micrometeorological variables.

Additional measurements from on-plot gas flux wells, water table monitoring wells, and off-plot locations are also reported. Note that the experimental warming portion of this experiment concluded in 2022. These data are a continuation of measurements taken at previously warmed plots but plots were not actively manipulated after 2022.

The active layer and permafrost are the primary subsurface components of the Arctic land-atmosphere system. A permafrost research program is proposed that combines field measurements, laboratory measurements, and analyses and interpretations of data to be obtained at long-term study sites along a transects. These sites are in undisturbed areas, span a wide range of permafrost, climatic, and environmental conditions, include drill holes in the permafrost (from 40 to 75 m in depth), and have a long time series of data.

Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (mesoscale habitat data)

This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. Effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables were investigated: active channel width, variability of width within a reach, large wood frequency, mesoscale habitat distributions, median particle size, and percent fines. Stream mesoscale habitat areas for each 150 m stream reach were recorded in this particular dataset. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. Observers kept a running tally of the areas associated with various mesoscale habitat units including, cascades, riffles, pools, alcoves, pocket water, runs, glides, and obstructions.
