Acceptance of medical AI in skin cancer screening: A Choice-based Conjoint Survey
<p><strong>Background</strong>: There is a great interest in using artificial intelligence (AI) to screen for skin cancer. This is fueled by a rising incidence of skin cancer and an increasing scarcity of trained dermatologists. AI systems, capable of identifying melanoma, could save lives, enable immediate access to screenings, reduce unnecessary care and healthcare costs. While such AI-based systems are useful from a public health perspective, past research has shown that individual patients are very hesitant about being examined by an AI system. <strong>Objective</strong>: The aim of the present study was twofold. First, to determine how important the attributes provider (in-person physician, physician via teledermatology, AI, vs. personalized AI), costs of screening (free, 10€, 25€, vs. 40€) and waiting time (immediate, 1 day, 1 week, 4 weeks) were for patients’ choices of a particular mode of skin cancer screening. Second, to investigate whether sociodemographic characteristics, especially, age, were systematically related to participants’ individual choices. <strong>Methods</strong>: The study used choice-based conjoint-analysis to examine the acceptance of medical AI for a skin cancer screening from the patient's perspective. Participants responded to twelve choice sets, each containing three screening-variants, where each variant was described through attributes; provider, costs and waiting time. Furthermore, sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, income, job status, educational background) were assessed. <strong>Results</strong>: 126 (33%) respondents completed the online survey. The results from the conjoint analysis showed that the three attributes were more or less equal important for the participant’s choices, with provider being the most important. Inspecting the individual part worths showed that treatment by a physician was most preferred, followed by e-consultation with a physician and personalized AI. The three AI levels scored significantly lower. Concerning the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and relative importances we found, that only age showed a significant positive association to the important of the attribute provider (r = 0.21; p < .02). Younger participants put a lesser importance on the provider than older participants. All other correlations were not significant. <strong>Conclusions</strong>: The present study adds to the growing body of research using choice-experiments to investigate the acceptance of artificial intelligence in health contexts. Future studies need to explore the reasons <em>why</em> AI is accepted or rejected and whether sociodemographic characteristics are associated this decision.</p> <p> </p>

Data from: Female fruit flies copy the acceptance, but not the rejection, of a mate
<p>Acceptance and avoidance can be socially transmitted, especially in the case of mate choice. When a <em>Drosophila melanogaster </em>female observes a conspecific female (called demonstrator female) choosing to mate with one of two males, the former female (called observer female) can memorize and copy the latter female's choice. Traditionally in mate-copying experiments, demonstrations provide two types of information to observer females, namely the acceptance (positive) of one male, and the rejection of the other male (negative). To disentangle the respective roles of positive and negative information in <em>Drosophila</em> mate copying, we performed experiments in which demonstrations provided only one type of information at a time. We found that positive information alone is sufficient to trigger mate copying. Observer females preferred males of phenotype A after watching a female mating with a male of phenotype A in the absence of any other male. Contrastingly, negative information alone (provided by a demonstrator female actively rejecting a male of phenotype B) did not affect future observer females' mate choice. These results suggest that the informative part of demonstrations in <em>Drosophila </em>mate-copying experiments lies mainly, if not exclusively, in the positive information provided by the copulation with a given male. We discuss the reasons for such a result and suggest that <em>Drosophila </em>females learn to prefer the successful males, implying that the underlying learning mechanisms may be shared with those of appetitive memory in non-social associative learning.</p>

Telerobotic intergroup contact: Acceptance and preferences in Israel and Palestine - R Data and code.
<p>We present telerobotics as a novel form of intergroup contact to reduce prejudice and bring about positive social change between groups in conflict. Based on our previous conceptual framework and set of design hypotheses, we conducted a survey that confronts the theory with empirical data on acceptance and preferences of the telerobotic intergroup contact approach in Israel and Palestine. The results shed light on differences in attitudes between the groups and on design considerations for telerobotics when used for intergroup contact. The study serves as a foundation for implementing this novel method of technology-enhanced conflict resolution in the field.</p> <p>The data was analyzed in R software. <p>Data files used in the paper that contain information that is not available in public catalogues, and that is necessary to produce the figures.</p> <p>The extended dataset consists of: i) (<strong>a</strong> and <strong>b</strong> panels of figure 1): two tables directly retrieved from the Gaia archive as described in Methods, supplemented by extinction information on a star-by-star basis; the code used to interpolate the 3-D extinction maps by Lallement et al. (2018) can be retrieved from \url{https://github.com/edober/dust_maps_3d}. ii) (<strong>c</strong> and <strong>d</strong> panels of Figure 1, Figure 2 and panel <strong>a </strong>of Figure 3): two tables with the derived solution CMDs. Two files with the necessary data to define the boxes used to select stars in the blue and red sequences of the halo CMD are also included. iii) (panel <strong>b</strong> of Figure 3): necessary tables with the age, metallicity and velocity data for the main progenitor and accreted satellite for realisation g15784 of the MaGICC program (Brook et al. 2012). Anammox bacteria originally used nitric oxide as electron accepter
<p><strong>Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria has been known to oxidize ammonium with nitrite as the terminal electron acceptor. Recently, however, nitric oxide (NO)-dependent anammox has been shown in <em>Candidatus</em> (<em>Ca.</em>) Kuenenia stuttgartiensis with first complete genome and it is hypothesized that NO-dependent anammox bacteria existed on early Earth. Here we report second complete genome of anammox bacteria, <em>Ca.</em> Brocadia pituitae, from metagenome of anammox bacterial community (ABC). Comparative genomics of <em>B. pituitae</em>, <em>K. stuttgartiensis</em> and 6 other anammox bacteria with nearly complete genomes revealed that their core genome structure comprises syntenic 1,152 orthologous groups. Both copper-containing (NirK) and <em>cd</em><sub>1</sub> (NirS) nitrite reductases which are absent in <em>B. pitutitae</em> were not included in the core although <em>Ca.</em> Brocadia sp. UTMX2 and <em>Ca.</em> B. caroliniensis possess <em>nirK</em> gene. Indeed, IS element is inserted adjacent to the <em>nirK</em> gene in <em>Ca.</em> Jettenia caeni genome and also phylogenetic analysis revealed that the origin of nitrite reductases is derived from multiple lineages. Thus, it is clear that the <em>nirK</em> and <em>nirS </em>genes<em> </em>of anammox bacteria within family <em>Brocadiaceae</em> were acquired by horizontal gene transfer. ABC fed with nitrite and ammonium shows anammox activity but it disappears when the biomass granules are dispersed by agitation. Also, because ABC can oxidize ammonium with NO like <em>K. stuttgartiensis</em>, other nitrite reductase holders in ABC are deemed to supply NO to <em>B. pituitae</em>. Our results support the previous hypothesis that anammox bacteria originally used NO as electron accepter.</strong></p>
Concreteness Effect in Morphosyntax (Acceptability Judgments Data)
<p>The data contains acceptability ratings of Serbian sentences containing two types of clausal complements: infinitives and so-called "da+present" constructions (DPCs) combined with subjects with various degrees of concreteness (most concrete - proper names, intermediate - plural common nouns, most abstract - abstract nouns). The data was collected to test the hypothesis that more concrete subjects are rated better when combined with the more concrete type of clausal complement - DPC, and more abstract subjects are rated more favorably with the more abstract type of clausal complement - infinitive. The data also contains basic demographic information where any possibility of discovering the personal idenitities of participants is blocked. </p>
