Data from: Estimating survival and adoption rates of dependent juveniles
<p>1. Population growth and fitness are typically most sensitive to adult survival in long-lived species, but variation in recruitment often explains most of the variation in fitness, as past selection has canalized adult survival. Estimating juvenile survival until age of independence has proven challenging, because marking individuals in this age class may directly affect survival. For Greater Sage-grouse, uniquely marking juveniles in the first days of life likely results in adverse effects to survival, detection of juveniles is not perfect, and females adopt juveniles from other parents. These challenges are encountered by researchers studying avian and mammalian species with similar life histories, yet, methods do not exist that explicitly estimate all these components of the recruitment process.</p> <p>2. We propose a novel data collection method and demographic model to simultaneously estimate rates of detection, survival, and adoption of juvenile individuals. Using multiple cameras to film the beginning of juvenile activity on specific days, we obtained counts of juveniles associated with marked females. Increases of juveniles to broods provided information that enabled us to estimate rates of adoption that can be applied at the population level. Losses from broods informed apparent survival. These losses could be attributed to death, or they could be chicks that were adopted by other females.</p> <p>3. We found evidence that apparent survival of juveniles was influenced by localized weather patterns when chicks were young. Similarly, we found that young chicks were more susceptible to the adverse effect of attending females being flushed by an observer. Both of these patterns diminished quickly as chicks aged. We provide the first-ever estimates of interval-specific adoption rates.</p> <p>4. Our results suggest that researchers should be cautious when designing studies to estimate juvenile survival. More importantly, they provide insight into adoption, a behavior that has been known to exist for decades.</p>
Raw data for the article: A Cryptochrome adopts distinct moon- and sunlight states and functions as sun- versus moonlight interpreter in monthly oscillator entrainment
<p>The moon's monthly cycle synchronizes reproduction in countless marine organisms. The mass-spawning bristle worm Platynereis dumerilii uses an endogenous monthly oscillator to phase reproduction to specific days. Classical work showed that this oscillator is set by full moon. But how do organisms recognize such a specific moon phase? We uncover that the light receptor L-Cryptochrome (L-Cry) is able to discriminate between different moonlight durations, as well as between sun- and moonlight. Consistent with L-Cry's function as light valence interpreter, its genetic loss leads to a faster re-entrainment under artificially strong nocturnal light. This suggests that L-Cry blocks "wrong" light from impacting on the monthly oscillator. A biochemical characterization of purified L-Cry protein, exposed to naturalistic sun- or moonlight, reveals the formation of distinct sun- and moonlight states characterized by different photoreduction- and recovery kinetics of L-Cry's co-factor Flavin Adenine Dinucleotide. In vivo, L-Cry's sun- versus moonlight states correlate with distinct sub-cellular localizations, indicating different signalling. In contrast, r-Opsin1, the most abundant ocular opsin, is not required for monthly oscillator entrainment. Our work reveals a new concept for correct moonlight interpretation involving a "valence interpreter" that provides entraining photoreceptor(s) with light source and moon phase information. These findings advance our mechanistic understanding of a fundamental biological phenomenon: moon-controlled monthly timing. Such level of understanding is also an essential prerequisite to tackle anthropogenic threats on marine ecology.</p>

Cloud computing is one of the most popular and sophisticated technologies adopted by organizations worldwide. Some world-leading organizations enhance their efficiency and effectiveness by using cloud computing technology. Working from home (WFH) has been a popular trend among organizations during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The COVID-19 saw a breakthrough in work cultures and environments where working from home was a remarkable success in remote working environments, despite being a rare phenomenon in Sri Lanka. Yet, it is argued that the deployment of work from home has not been effective among Sri Lankan business organizations due to a lack of IT infrastructure, facilities, and knowledge. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of cloud computing, embracing the service models (Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service) as theoretical lenses and testing the COVID-19 as the moderator. The study has been conducted based on a deductive approach and adopted a stratified random sampling method. The sample consisted of 384 IT employees among those who had experienced working from home. The study utilized multiple regression and found that cloud computing service models significantly impact work from home with the moderating effect of COVID-19.

A thematic synthesis on the adoption of regression testing techniques in Android projects
<p>In software testing, employing regression techniques is a viable strategy to deal with the complexity and the constant evolution of applications since its primary goal is to ensure that changes made between versions do not change the system’s behavior. Although the literature has dedicated efforts to developing new regression testing techniques suitable for the Android mobile platform, studies are limited concerning demonstrating which techniques software developers employ in practice. This study aims to report on a thematic synthesis of adopting regression testing techniques in Android projects. The research encompassed four stages: (i) conducting a structured literature review on regression testing techniques for the Android platform, (ii) carrying out an expert survey, (iii) conducting interviews with industry professionals, and (iv) building a thematic synthesis. The thematic synthesis presented a model from analyzing the results obtained in this multimethod study on regression testing techniques. With such a stud, we could present empirical evidence on how professionals perform regression testing in Android projects, identify the commonly used regression testing techniques, and leverage the requirements for automating Android applications through regression testing.</p>

Data from: Eviction-driven infanticide and sexually selected adoption and infanticide in a neotropical parrot
<p>Infanticide and adoption have been attributed to sexual selection, where an individual later reproduces with the parent whose offspring it killed or adopted. While sexually-selected infanticide is well known, evidence for sexually-selected adoption is anecdotal. We report on both behaviors at 346 nests over 27 years in green-rumped parrotlets (<em>Forpus passerinus</em>) in Venezuela. Parrotlets are monogamous with long-term pairbonds, exhibit a strongly male-biased adult sex ratio, and nest in cavities that are in short supply, creating intense competition for nest sites and mates. Infanticide attacks occurred at 256 nests in two distinct contexts: (1) Attacks were primarily committed by nonbreeding pairs (69%) attempting to evict parents from the cavity. Infanticide attacks per nest were positively correlated with population size and evicting pairs never adopted abandoned offspring. Competition for limited nest sites was a primary cause of eviction-driven infanticide; and (2) Attacks occurred less frequently at nests where one mate died (31%), was perpetrated primarily by stepparents of both sexes, and was independent of population size. Thus, within a single species and mating system, infanticide occurred in multiple contexts due to multiple drivers. Nevertheless, 48% of stepparents of both sexes adopted offspring, and another 23% of stepfathers exhibited both infanticide and long-term care. Stepfathers were often young males who subsequently nested with widows, reaching earlier ages of first breeding than competitors and demonstrating sexually-selected adoption. Adoption and infanticide conferred similar fitness benefits to stepfathers and appeared to be equivalent strategies driven by limited breeding opportunities, male-biased sex ratios and long-term monogamy.</p>
Climate change mitigation potential of widespread cover crop adoption in U.S.
<p>This geospatial dataset represents climate change mitigation benefits from widespread cover crop adoption on U.S. cropland. We simulated changes in soil organic carbon stocks and nitrous oxide fluxes over a 20-year period for baseline cover crop adoption rates (derived from historical adoption rates) and a high cover crop adoption (80%) scenario in the continental U.S. Data were generated using the DayCent ecosystem model driven by cropping histories in the USDA National Resources Inventory (NRI) and associated agricultural management data. Here we present the mean and standard deviation of annual soil organic carbon stock changes and nitrous oxide fluxes for both baseline and high cover crop adoption scenarios on a county level.</p>
Replication Package: Navigating the Complexity of Generative AI Adoption in Software Engineering
<p>This paper explores the adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and Large Language Models (LLMs) within the domain of software engineering, focusing on the influencing factors at the individual, technological, and social levels. We applied a convergent mixed-methods approach to offer a comprehensive understanding of AI adoption dynamics. We initially conducted a structured interview study with 100 software engineers, drawing upon the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Diffusion of Innovations theory (DOI), and the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as guiding theoretical frameworks. Employing the Gioia Methodology, we derived a preliminary theoretical model of AI adoption in software: the Human-AI Collaboration and Adaptation Framework (HACAF). This model was then validated using Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) based on data from 183 software professionals. Our research unveils the complex dynamics at play in AI adoption within software engineering. Findings indicate that at this early stage of AI integration, the compatibility of AI tools within existing development workflows predominantly drives their adoption, challenging conventional technology acceptance theories. The impact of perceived usefulness, social factors, and personal innovativeness seems less pronounced than expected. The study provides crucial insights for future AI tool design and offers a framework for developing effective organizational implementation strategies.</p>

ERL-118550 Data: Rebates and Grid Decarbonization from the Inflation Reduction Act Promote Equitable Adoption of Energy Efficiency Retrofits
<p>The authors have self-reported an issue in how they used RSMeans 2019 City Cost Index (CCI) data to adjust for regional cost differences. The publicly available webpage stated these data could be used to “adjust for cost differences when compared to the national average, show cost differences between cities, compare cost differences between quarters of the same year, or adjust costs to Canadian cities.” However, the RSMeans Data and Engineering Department later clarified that these values “were intended to show how much CCI values changed for each city at the start of 2019 compared to the values in our 2019 book.” Nevertheless, our capital cost estimates closely align with several peer-reviewed studies and publicly available data sources. Based on our review, we do not believe our method significantly affected the study’s overall findings or conclusions. Dataset - Indonesian People's Readiness for Blockchain Adoption in E-Commerce - 2024
<p>The dataset on Indonesian blockchain adoption was collected through a questionnaire conducted over three months, from April to June 2024, gathering 422 responses. The survey had seven main sections, each designed to collect important data for the study.<br><br>The first section introduced the study’s purpose and asked demographic questions. Respondents were also asked about their experience with e-commerce and blockchain technology. The second section explored how ready Indonesians are to adopt blockchain infrastructure for e-commerce retail transactions.<br><br>The final sections focused on key study variables, including Transaction Security [BTS], Transparency [BT], Cost Efficiency [BCE], Transaction Speed [BS], Customer Trust [CT], and E-commerce Adoption [EA]. These variables were used to assess the overall readiness of Indonesians for integrating blockchain into the e-commerce sector.<br><br>This dataset offers valuable insights into the potential challenges and advantages of adopting blockchain technology in Indonesia's e-commerce transactions.</p>
