Drawing on local knowledge and attitudes for the conservation of critically endangered rhino rays in Goa, India
<p>In the context of marine species declines in data-limited regions, local ecological knowledge (LEK) is a valuable source of information on species ecology and historical trends. LEK can also help understand how threatened species exist within a local culture, in terms of their uses and values, and reveal attitudes toward their conservation. Rhino rays (guitarfish and wedgefish) are highly threatened by overfishing with most species Critically Endangered, yet poorly studied in countries like India that fish them the most. We drew on LEK to understand the socio-ecological status of rhino rays in Goa, on the west coast of India. We investigated their habitat use and seasonality, interaction with fisheries, socio-economic uses, and relational values. We also explored attitudes of fishers towards rhino rays and their conservation. A combination of semi-structured interviews and key informant interviews (88 in total) were conducted with fishers at multiple sites. Local knowledge suggests that nearshore habitats around river mouths form important nursery grounds for some rhino rays, and provided insights into their seasonality and breeding. Rhino rays appeared to be targeted historically but are entirely bycaught at present, with the highest catches in gillnets and in the South Goa district, during September and October. LEK indicated that taxa like sawfish (<em>Pristis</em> spp.) and wedgefish (<em>Rhynchobatus</em> spp.) have severely declined or disappeared from this region. We coded different relational values, from recreation (rhino rays are consumed and enjoyed with alcohol) to symbolic values (rhino rays are considered lucky). All key informants expressed positive attitudes towards rhino ray conservation and stated that a ban on landing these species would have little to no impact on fisher earnings. The usefulness of LEK suggests it should be brought into the scientific mainstream to support development of more equitable and socially-appropriate management plans. Fostering relational values can reinforce fishers' positive attitudes, thereby enhancing rhino ray conservation. Their low commercial value and potentially high post-capture survival suggest that using norm-based approaches to promote live release may be successful. Further research on rhino ray ecology and human dimensions can support the development of appropriate conservation interventions.</p>

<p>The file contains raw data collected cross-sectionally in DKI Jakarta Province in October-November 2022 by distributing questionaires online using the Google form platform via social media such as Line, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter. The questionaire consists of four parts. The first part contains the identity of respondents, the second part contains knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of respondents concerning the masks' waste management, and the last part is how to treat used masks. </p>

Multilingual publishing in the SSH in Poland and attitudes towards English
<p>This dataset contains responses to a self-constructed questionnaire that was designed to provide the following information: What languages are used for research dissemination in various SSH disciplines in Poland? What are the main languages of the research cited by authors in these disciplines? When languages other than Polish are used for research dissemination, are the results published in national or international venues? What are the prevailing reasons for language choices? What is the position of English in SSH disciplines in Poland? What is the attitude of Polish SSH scholars towards the dominance of English as the international language of science?</p> <p>The questionnaire was written in Polish and consisted of 52 items arranged in three thematic lines: multilingual publication practices, the role of English in research dissemination, and attitudes to English as the global language of science.</p> <p>The data were collected in an online survey based on Google Forms. The link to the questionnaire was distributed via email among scholars affiliated with the social sciences and humanities units of 20 Polish universities which took part in the Excellence Initiative – Research University competition, a funding programme launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (<a href="https://www.gov.pl/web/science/the-excellence-initiative---research-university-programme">https://www.gov.pl/web/science/the-excellence-initiative---research-university-programme</a>).</p> <p>Time of data collection: 12 October 2020–16 November 2020.</p> <p>Volume of data and the response rate: 12,100 emails sent; 1,575 completed forms received (response rate about 13%); 50 forms removed (contradictory or random responses; this dataset is limited to speakers of Polish as the first language).</p> <p>The classification of fields and disciplines follows Polish regulations in force at the time of the study (Regulation of the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education of 20 September 2018 on Classification of fields and disciplines of science and disciplines of the arts; Journal of Laws 2018, item 1818). Compared to the OECD classification, the main points of difference involve the status of history and archaeology, linguistics and literary studies, and economics and management as separate disciplines.</p> <p>The data collection was not funded by any external source.</p>

Internet Attitudes - Our Region and the World Wide Web. International research and analysis in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Romania
<p>This research by the Institute of the Information Society of the University of Public Service, involving four Central European countries: the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Romania, examined the characteristics of the use of information technology by the adult population in the region, mainly for communication purposes. A telephone survey was conducted in October and November 2019, and the results are representative of the population over 18 years of age in the four countries categorised by age, gender, education, type of settlement and region. Adders are Amazing project evaluation of attitudes and connectedness to nature
<ol> <li>Adder <em>(Vipera</em> <em>berus</em>) populations are experiencing declines in many countries, including the UK. Perceptions of adders and other venomous snakes are generally negative, making conservation of these species a challenge, and persecution remains within the top five perceived causes for adder declines in the UK. Improved understanding and attitudes are needed to support current conservation efforts. However, ensuring these positive attitudes continue into the future relies on addressing children's loss of connection to nature, and intervention at this early attitude-formation stage can be crucial for traditionally 'unpopular' species, such as snakes.</li> <li>An adder-focussed public-engagement project, Adders are Amazing!, was carried out in Pembrokeshire, UK, in 2018–19 to improve understanding and attitudes towards adders using a blended science-creative arts approach. The project included half-day primary school-based workshops to inform 111 pupils aged 8 to 11 about adder ecology, alongside creative art experiences. Questionnaires were used to measure the children's attitudes towards adders and their nature connectedness both before and after the workshops and these were compared with equivalent questionnaires carried out at a control school (57 pupils) where no workshops were conducted. </li> <li>The project demonstrated that engagement that blends both art and science can significantly change attitudes towards adders without any direct contact with the animals themselves; specifically, participants' scores for 'Wonder', 'Learning Interest' and 'Conservation Concern' increased. The workshops also significantly increased measures of the children's general connectedness to nature (specifically, 'Enjoyment of Nature' and 'Responsibility for Nature').</li> <li>We recommend conservation bodies focus on, and not shy away from, so-called 'unpopular' species, to promote understanding and acceptance of these species and support their conservation. Blended arts-science initiatives, which can be easily adapted to suit a wide range of species and the artistic practices of local communities, are an effective way to achieve this.</li> </ol>
