Long-term vegetation changes in Nardus grasslands indicate eutrophication, recovery from acidification, and management change as the main drivers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Questions</p> <p>Which trends and patterns of community change occurred in <em>Nardus</em> grasslands over recent decades in parts of the Continental biogeographic region of Germany? Are patterns and trends consistent across two study regions? Do impacts of environmental changes on <em>Nardus</em> grasslands in Central Europe correspond to those identified in the European Atlantic biogeographic region?</p> <p>Location</p> <p>East Hesse Highlands, Germany</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In 2012-2015, we re-surveyed quasi-permanent plots that had been initially surveyed between 1971 and 1987, and re-measured soil parameters. We tested for differences in species frequency and cover, mean Ellenberg indicator values, species richness, and soil variables. Nitrogen- and sulphur-deposition data were analysed to evaluate possible effects of atmospheric pollutants. We used regression- and redundancy analyses to identify environmental drivers responsible for changes in species composition.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Across regions, we found significant increases in soil pH, Ellenberg R and N indicator values, plant-nutrient indicators, forbs, species of agricultural grasslands and of fallows. By contrast, the C:N ratio<em>, Nardus</em> grassland specialists, low-nutrient indicators, and graminoids declined. Changes in species composition were related to changes in pH and management. There was a strong decrease in sulphur and a moderate increase in nitrogen deposition, whose local scale pattern did not correlate with changes in soil parameters. However, there was an effect of local NH<sub>y</sub> changes on species composition.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings indicate significant overall eutrophication, a trend towards less acidic conditions and insufficient management, which are widely consistent across our study regions and correspond to recent reports of vegetation changes and recovery from acidification in the Atlantic biogeographic region. We assume the reduced sulphur deposition during recent decades to be a major driver of these changes, combined with increased nitrogen deposition and reduced management intensity. This suggests a large-scale validity of processes that influenced changes in <em>Nardus</em> grasslands of Western and Central Europe.</p>
Using a custom mobile application for change management in an electronic health record implementation
<p><b><i>Objectives </i></b></p> <p>Institutions cite managing the modification in infrastructure, technical support, and process change as substantial barriers to a successful electronic health record (EHR) implementation. In an effort to organize and centralize the complex scheduling, task completion and communication needs of a "big-bang" EHR go-live, we developed a unified communication system with the goal of improving implementation process efficiency. Our goal was to create a platform that would work across the medical enterprise.</p> <p><b><i>Materials and Methods</i></b></p> <p>We employed an agile process to design the application, called Hubbl, based on initial requirements and iteratively obtained stakeholder user. The final feature set included role specific organization, integrated communication, task and content management tooling, and embedded project information retrieval, all embedded into the end user's day to day activities.</p> <p><b><i>Results </i></b></p> <p>User enrollment continually increased from launch in February of 2017 through go-live day. During the pre-go-live period, usage increased from an average of 7.37 events/user/day to 18.65 events/user/day with over 97 communications sent across all periods. 5,400 unique users accessed tip sheets and information retrieval tools averaged 28.84 searches/user/day during the go-live period with an average high of 46.33 searches/user/day five days post go-live. User access during go-live and post-go-live averaged 12.82 accesses/user/day and decreased from 20.42 average accesses on day one of go live to 14.07 averaged accesses on day 60 of post go live with over 727 tasks monitored to completion during all periods.</p> <p><b><i>Conclusion</i></b></p> <p>Hubbl was an essential component of our communication, task coordination, and change management strategy, for our EHR go live. Institutions that choose a unified mobile and web based platform during a substantial IT (information technology) implementation can feasibly ensure task completion, project coordination, and timely information dissemination.</p>
Data from: Changes in ecosystem properties after postfire management strategies in wildfire affected areas
<p>1. Forest are highly vulnerable to global change drivers, such as an increase in wildfire events. Learning more about how and why different postfire management strategies regulate the ability of forest ecosystem properties (e.g., plant diversity and function) to simultaneously recover after wildfire and provide multiple ecosystem functions is of critical importance.</p> <p>2. This study aims to evaluate how unburned, burned managed and burned unmanaged plots regulate the responses of multiple forest ecosystem properties (e.g., plant diversity, nutrient cycling, soil carbon stocks, water regulation, and decomposition and wood production) and overall multifunctionality to wildfires. In September 2017, we selected two postfire management strategies in a 3 km2 watershed previously affected by a wildfire in July 2012: contour-felled log debris (CFD), log erosion barriers area (LEB), and also unburned and unmanaged plots (BNA). We randomly distributed 12 plots among the three postfire management strategies (3 plots per treatment) and unburned.</p> <p>3. The results showed that multiple forest ecosystem properties were significantly affected by wildfire and that specific postfire management treatment (e.g., LEB and CFD) can be used to efficiently support plant diversity and ecosystem functioning. Our results revealed that the general indicators of ecosystem functions decreased in Mediterranean forests after wildfires and postfire management strategies (LEB and CFD) significantly helped to recover the ecosystems' short-term community-level properties and ecosystem functions (5 years after a wildfire event) to prefire levels. </p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications: These findings demonstrate that multiple ecosystem functions are affected by wildfires in Mediterranean forests and show that postfire management treatments can promote multifunctionality and plant diversity. Our results unfold the potential of LEB and CFD as effective strategies for recovering community-level properties and forest functions in the short term.</p>
Data from: Management of behavioural change in patients presenting with a diagnosis of dementia: a video vignette study with Australian general practitioners
Objective: To test the impact of feedback on the proposed management of standardised patients presenting with behavioural change with a diagnosis of dementia in Australian primary care. Materials and methods: A video vignette study was performed with Australian general practitioners (GPs) in 2013. Participants viewed six pairs of matched videos depicting people presenting changed behaviour in the context of a dementia diagnosis in two phases. In both phases GPs indicated their diagnosis and management. After phase 1, GPs were offered feedback on management strategies for the patients depicted. Analyses focused on identification of change in management between the two phases of the study. Factors impacting on the intention to coordinate care for such patients were tested in a questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Results: Forty-five GPs completed the study. There was significant improvement in the proposed management of three of the six scenarios after the intervention. Older GPs were more likely to refer appropriately (OR=1.11 (1.01 to 1.23), p=0.04.). Overall referral to support agencies was more likely after the intervention (OR=2.52 (1.53 to 4.14), p<0.001). Older GPs were less likely to intend to coordinate care for such patients (OR=0.89 (0.81 to 0.98) p=0.02). Participants who felt confident about their ability to coordinate care were more likely to do so (OR=3.79 (1.08 to 13.32) p=0.04). Conclusions: The intervention described in this study promoted multidisciplinary management of patients with behavioural problems with a diagnosis of dementia. Increasing practitioner confidence in their ability to coordinate care may increase the proportion of GPs who will respond to patients and carers in this context. Older GPs may benefit in particular.
