COLET: A Dataset for Cognitive workLoad estimation based on Eye-Tracking
<p>Cognitive workload is an important component in performance psychology, ergonomics, and human factors. Unfortunately, benchmarks and publicly available datasets are scarce, making it difficult to establish new approaches and comparative studies. In this work, COLET-COgnitive workLoad state estimation based on Eye-Tracking dataset is presented. Forty-seven (47) individuals' eye movements were monitored as they solved puzzles involving visual search tasks of varying complexity and duration. The authors give an in-depth study of the participants' performance during the experiments while eye and gaze features were derived from low-level eye recorded metrics, and their relationships with the experiment tasks were investigated. Finally, the results from the classification of cognitive workload levels solely based on eye and gaze data, by employing and testing a set of machine learning algorithms are provided. Effects of brain maintenance and cognitive reserve on age-related decline in three cognitive abilities
<p><strong>Objectives </strong></p> <p>Age-related cognitive changes can be influenced by both brain maintenance (BM), which refers to the relative absence over time of changes in neural resources or neuropathologic changes, and cognitive reserve (CR), which encompasses brain processes that allow for better-than-expected behavioral performance given the degree of life-course related brain changes. This study evaluated the effects of age, BM, and CR on longitudinal changes over two visits, 5 years apart, in three cognitive abilities that capture most of age-related variability.</p> <p><strong>Method </strong></p> <p>Participants included 254 healthy adults aged 20–80 years at recruitment. Potential BM was estimated using whole brain cortical thickness and white matter mean diffusivity at both visits. Education and IQ (estimated with AMNART) were tested as moderating factors for cognitive changes in the three cognitive abilities.</p> <p><strong> Results </strong></p> <p>Consistent with BM—after accounting for age, sex, and baseline performance—individual differences in the preservation of mean diffusivity and cortical thickness were independently associated with relative preservation in the three abilities. Consistent with CR—after accounting for age, sex, baseline performance, and structural brain changes—higher IQ, but not education, was associated with reduced 5-year decline in Reasoning (𝛽=0.387, p=0.002), and education was associated with reduced decline in Speed (𝛽=0.237, p=0.039). <strong> </strong></p> <p><strong>Discussion</strong></p> <p>These results demonstrate that both CR and BM can moderate cognitive changes in healthy aging and that the two mechanisms can make differential contributions to preserved cognition.</p>
Stability and change in male fertility patterns by cognitive ability across 32 birth cohorts
<p>The relationship between cognitive ability (CA) and childbearing remains unsettled. Using Norwegian administrative registers with population coverage, we study how male lifetime fertility patterns differ across cognitive score groups, and how these changed across the 1950–1981 birth cohorts, covering a period characterized by rapid social and economic change. The analyses reveal systematic differences in fertility and fertility timing across CA groups, with high-scoring males having delayed but ultimately higher fertility than lower-scoring males. This pattern remains stable over time despite strong trends towards delayed and reduced fertility. The overall positive relationship between CA and fertility is primarily driven by high rates of childlessness in the lowest-scoring group, with low-scoring males showing higher rates of parity progression conditional on having children.</p>

Data for: Multifunctional fibers enable modulation of cortical and deep brain activity during cognitive behavior in macaques
<p>Recording and modulating neural activity <em>in vivo</em> enables investigations of the neurophysiology underlying behavior and disease, but there is a dearth of translational tools for simultaneous recording and localized receptor-specific modulation. We addressed this limitation by translating multifunctional fiber neurotechnology previously only available for rodent studies to enable cortical and subcortical neural recording and modulation in macaques. In the premotor cortex and putamen, we recorded single-neuron activity and local field potential oscillations during intracranial GABA infusions while a macaque performed a working memory task. We also recorded neuronal activity during saline, artificial cerebrospinal fluid, and no infusion control experiments. We characterized the dynamic effects of local infusions with multiple time series analysis techniques, including spectrotemporal analysis and state-space modeling. This dataset and accompanying software toolbox provide detailed insight into the electrophysiological effect of neurotransmitter receptor modulation in both cortical and subcortical structures in an awake macaque. </p>
